Manti Te’o documentary (Netflix)

The Deadspin guys who broke the story are featured in the documentary as much as Te'o himself. Why the hell would they want to help him for no reason? The person who perpetrated the hoax is on there. None of those people say that Te'o was anything other than a guy who got catfished. I don't understand the resistance some of y'all have to getting more information/context. It's not like anyone is saying anyone who ever made a Te'o joke is a bad person.

It's fkn weird. Some people don't change their minds

How much more information was provided? Te'o didn't really say anything that he hasn't already said. I suppose Naya gave a little more insight into her thought process, but why would anyone trust what she has to say? The big questions didn't get asked, let alone answered.

So, no, my mind has not been changed. In my mind the worst case is he was in on it with a person who was hardly a complete stranger, and the best case is he grossly embellished the story of a relationship that he doesn't even seem to be consistent about taking seriously. The best and worst case feature a guy who really enjoyed the attention it brought him.

I'm so sorry that story took the attention away from your Tide and their championship. Sincere condolences on that, I know how hard that must have been for many in Alabama to have no one even care about your championship team not even a week later. Your attitude I at least can understand.

That's what, five times you've said this without a response?

Here's the attention for which you're whoring.

This is a thread about a documentary. Maybe watch the documentary before you have an opinion on it...
Yeah it's not like I dont know who the guy is, or remember the story. Honestly if it wssnt for a thread I never would have heard about the documentary and would have cared even less to watch it. And there is no way I would pay for it, and this thread is just verifying it's not worth paying for it.

They are all in it for the same reason, publicity. What do any of them have to lose or even risk at this point?

How do the conspiracy theorists explain 1,000 phone calls on record? Something like 150 of them were over an hour. Is that really how deep the con went for Te'o? I can't believe that for a second.

1000 is a lot, for sure. But the duration isn't significant. You can place a call and put the phone down while studying or watching TV. Heck, Te'o claimed that they sometimes fell asleep and woke up to 8 hour call times.

If I want to be doing stuff with audio on my phone (which I do) a fake hr long phone call x 150 seems like significant effort. 1000 fake calls is a TON of effort. Ain't no fkn way, bro.

I haven't seen the call log (nor has anyone, because he only showed them to Jeremy Schaap, who made sure to note that the logs "could not be independently verified"), but how many of the 1 hr calls were overnight? Again, he admitted to sleeping with the phone running.

Without knowing what they talked about it's impossible to say either way if it proves he knew or didnt. For all anyone knows they could have been plotting together how to spin the story.

I find it more questionable that they spent that long on the phone and Manti never asked anything or heard anything that didnt make him question anything about it. At some point that conversation had to go beyond "hey babe how was your day?"

Yet here you are.
I find the story itself fairly uninteresting, I find people's reactions to it, and what seems to justify their positions fairly interesting. I cant help and wonder if they apply this much thought to other more important situations.

Did it even take attention away from their win? Usually when Te'o's name gets brought up, someone saying "Remember how bad Bama made him look in the natty?" isn't far behind.

But that's the thing. You do not know. You know what the media reported during the event. This is not a discussion about that media coverage. It's a discussion about an in depth documentary that added a lot of new and different information. You quite literally have no clue what you're talking about.

I really don't know what was "new and different." Other than Ronaiah living as a woman, it just seemed like a long form version of what's been out there for years. Te'o got to talk about how this has affected his life over the last decade, but that doesn't really add any insight into how it all went down.

He did. You didn't watch the doc, dude.

It's a "conspiracy" to point out that Te'o has chosen not to make his evidence public? When a publication goes out of its way to point out that they couldn't validate the document they were provided, it ought to tell you something.

"Couldn't be validated" now? I thought it wasn't "independently verified"?

You're saying ESPN, Daily Wire, Teo's parents, and Naya are all perpetuating this lie with Manti, so yeah.

Edit: i see what you are saying about the records but it still requires Daily Wire to be lying

Yes, that's how quotation marks work.

I'm definitely not saying that ESPN or the Daily News (which I assume you meant) are in on anything. They reported. Though some of that reporting pre-Deadspin piece was pretty crappy.

Not lying. They reported what they were given. They didn't publish it, and I can only assume that they weren't given permission to do so just like ESPN couldn't publish the AT&T records.

I plan to watch it but can someone tell me if it is really that interesting? A two hour documentary about some goober that had a fake girlfriend.
