I think he means all the posi press they gave the girlfriend story when she "died" and he played through his anguish. It was an si cover story and discussed ad nauseum in the sports press. He's saying si and espn should have made sure this was a real human being before running the heartbreaking sports story of the year. I'd guess their fact checkers rarely face the is this person a real human task and didn't think that was necessary.

He still said at one point that he spent time with her in Hawaii and California in the previos stories before this. I believe that pretty much proves he lied and ND doesn't want to look like idiots.

Other than he got played, that's the best thing for him. Is that he is gay and didn't know how to deal with it and panicked because he didn't want anyone to find out. Common thing that happens, people will admire his courage for coming out, etc. etc.
