Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's inspirational play in the weeks following his girlfriend's death and subsequent funeral in September publicized Te'o's off-field back story in time to heat up his Heisman Trophy campaign, which began in earnest during the season's first month. The story grew through the end of the regular season and into bowl play, including a three-minute piece on CBS This Morning on the day of the BCS championship game on Jan. 7.

The story was also entirely false, according to an article by Deadspin.com. According to Deadspin, not only did Te'o's girlfriend not die in the days leading up the Michigan State game, she didn't exist at all.

In what Deadspin is describing as an elaborate hoax, Te'o's girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, was an online persona created by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a friend of Te'o's and a pastor at a church in Palmdale, Calif. Says the Deadspin article:

Manti received a phone call from a number he recognized from the gf.

When he answered it, it was a person that sounded like (her) that told him she was not dead.

He kept that secret till he called the coaches on the 26th.

They then informed Swarbrick and had a meeting of 105 minutes on the 27th and give every detail.

Manti did so and was "forthright" and was "eager" to share the info.

Swarbrick met with him the next day to review all the details and again was full and excellent partner in making sure the info was correct.

AD then took that info and shared it with leaders of the university. Questions were asked and Manti promptly responded. Decision was made to engage investiagative firm to figure out what was going with sophisticated hoax.

ND had final report on January 4th. Swarbrick met with Te'o and Kelly on the 5th to share the essence of those findings.

Left meeting with understanding of what they heard and engaged Manti's future representation in how best to respond and keep university engaged.

His understanding that they were on a timetable to release story next, but story today was released.

He's now answering questions.

That's the point about ESPN and the rest of the lame media. They tried to pull a Woodson for Heisman type push along with many in the media and used the false stories to promote the personality and ND. They didn't do their due diligence on the stories.
