Marcus Smart

Yeah, it's a bit fishy. But, amazingly, everyone bought Marcus Smart's immediate accusation that he was called a ******.

Due to his reaction.

As a major D1 superstar, you hear much worse than that on a daily basis from student sections.

It's impossible for me to believe calling him a piece of crap is the one thing that made him react like that. Just me

You seem to be taking the "freedom of speech is indispensable to a civil, democratic society" approach. At what point for you does one person's "freedom of speech" conflict with another person's "freedom of speech"? In other words, assuming a racial slur is used in the public space, when does that cross the line between free speech and intimidation (in other words, speech that threatens to close other voices by making them feel unwelcomed)? You say we need free speech so as to allow dissent and minority viewpoints, but when does free speech actually limit dissent? I hope I'm making myself clear. It's hard to express oneself on a forum.

I am still amazed that confrontations between fans and players aren't more common in basketball. The fans are super close, and they say some really mean stuff. You can't go hitting fans though. However as a fan, why should you be surprised if you get hit for saying something to a player that would certainly get you hit in a bar?

That man's reaction and that of his wife (I'm assuming) still just gets me. I find their indignation repulsive and pathetic.

Did the chair, the other night, call him a ******? Seems like his reaction to this guy was the same reaction to the chair.

Smart has been separated from opposing players multiple times this season (as a KU fan, I watch a lot of OSU basketball...or, at least I did before they hit the skids). Did the opposing players call him a ******?

This is a guy with a temper and an anger problem. Being set off by something more than "piece of crap" but less than "******" or "go back to Africa" does not surprise me.

At no point. So long as the government serves to protect the safety of those speaking, then one who is merely intimidated at being called names or insulted is one who I am not much concerned with.

Do I really need to explain to you the difference between shoving a fan and hitting a chair?

Never mind, I don't feel like going down that endless road

I guess I see a distinct difference between one expressing a dissenting view (however unpopular) and one simply insulting another person due to a characteristic they can't help. One is significant to a democracy in my opinion, while the other is not. I realize this leads to numerous legal conundrums, not least of which is what qualifies as an insult and what qualifies as a "characteristic one can't help," but at some point we have to live in the real world and place some stakes in the game.

No, I'm talking about the one from the camera 3 feet away.

Yea, that's the one I was talking about. You were able to discern what Orr said to Smart in that? Wow, kudos to you. I could not.

Should speech calling for a totalitarian form of government be protected?

I haven't been following this, but the Atlanta radio guys were saying that Smart initially alleged that the racial slur was used. Then after interviewing everybody and using the audio footage, it was obvious it wasn't. Then Smart started back peddling. If that's how it went down, Smart needs a serious punishment. Because the media was circling the wagons on this guy. And not just that, but it casts a bad shadow on other real racial problems. It's never good to cry wolf (which I'm particularly hateful of from big stuff, like rape, to even the stupid stuff, like flopping).

I'm on Marcus Smart side, fans these days just think they can say whatever they want and I don't blame Marcus for reacting in the heat of the moment.
