Marlon Brown

I'm still not convinced brown has what it takes to be a big time player. he's got all the attributes, but he's arrogant and not real bright from what i can tell. lucky for us he doesn't have to learn the claw-fense... that said i still really hope he comes. i don't want us to have to defend him.

He was one of the best WR's going up against the best players in the AA game. I'd say he's just fine.

How could you say Brown isn't a big time player. He could go to a D1 school in two sports and he came through in AA game with some of the best high school talent in the country on the field. What else does he have to prove.

Anyone heard how Brown took Drayton leaving? I hope we can land this kid. We really need Memphis kids to want to come to knoxville.

Maybe we could get the Discovery channel to move Neyland Stadium to west TN for a couple of years until we get the Memphis crowd coming back to UT and then move it back to Knoxville. Wait, what?!

I know he has the skills and attributes, but I think character and intelligence are underrated. Sure, he runs a 4.5 and has a 35" vertical, but one or two slip ups off the field and he's out like Ryan Perrilloux.

The reason his arrogance throws a red flag is because Perrilloux had the same attitude. He came in to LSU as the #2 prospect in the country, boasting that he was gonna win the heisman. Look where he is now.

Now we have Brown gloating that he's the best WR in the country and describing his visits with "it was straight." Maybe its just me, but arrogance and ignorance can prove to be a pretty bad combination.

This is just my personal opinion. I really hope he comes and I am proved wrong in every way.

From ocregister.com:

"A look at the players who were ranked among the nation's Top 25 prospects by two leading recruiting services in four recent classes revealed that blue chip prospects are just as likely to get arrested during their college careers as they are being named first-team All-America. The review of the college careers of the 133 recruits that received Top 25 national rankings from either SuperPrep or Rivals.com between 2002 and 2005 show mixed results.

Only one out of every four Top 25 signees earned first-team all-conference honors in college.
Nineteen out of the 133 earned first-team All-America honors. The same number of players were arrested during their college careers.
Players who completed their college careers and were available for the NFL draft were more than twice as likely to go undrafted as they were to be picked in the first round.
Twenty players were suspended at least once during their college careers. Six failed to qualify academically at the university they signed with, and 10 were ruled academically ineligible after they enrolled."

i think you have a good point there. i do hope we get him though!

But he has a high act score and a good gpa. I wouldn't want to sterotype him for the way he talks. I have a country accent but would hate to get put in the redneck/white trash group because of it.

What are his ACT and GPA? I don't think I've seen those stats... His interview after his touchdown catch in the UA game was hilarious... sounded like a 7 year old.

Someone else can provide a more detailed response, but I remember hearing his GPA was a 3.0 and he had like a 27-29 on his ACT. That's pretty darn good if you ask me.

Please, don't stereotype the kid without even knowing him. I don't know him at all - have just seen him play.

I saw him take an absolutely cheap shot in a bball game where he was pulled down by the neck on a fast break and he got up, didn't say a word and just went to the free throw line. His teammates and the crowd went nuts. I would have blown a gasket if it were me and nailed the dude.

Just my 2 cents.

I could have confused his scores with another prospect but I read some where that he had a 21 ACT score and 2.8 GPA but I can't remember where read that.

Yea 3.2 gpa is what has been reported and a 21 act. which isn't bad by any means. He could get into almost any public college with those scores.

That's awesome to know. As someone who still plays sports competitively I know its tough to take a cheap foul in stride like that. He may be a high character guy after all. Thanks bluechip.

As for the 27-29 ACT... that's almost impossible for me to believe. I'm sure he could pull a 3.0 gpa. I could have had a 3.0 in high school sleepwalking. Not to mention, athletes of his caliber often get preferential treatment/grades.

That was an excerpt from his myspace. 27-29 ACT? Doubt it.

Marlon Brown is a good kid. Harding is a very good private school here in Memphis. For him to be allowed to play sports at Harding he must maintain a certain grade point average. Grades and entrance requirments will not be an issue. Quality kid and Quality Student. JMVA1 i guess you have never sent a text message or you would understand the wording on Brown's site.

Well said I think some people just look for a reason to put these kids down.

Uh no ... Harding is not a very good private school. It's average. MUS, CBHS, and even Briarcrest and ECS are better athletically and academically.

Harding is descent but nothing like the athletic facilities of CBHS or Briarcrest. Briarcrest's athletic complex on Houston Levy road is top notch.
