Martin: Some guys just don't have the right mental makeup to win on the road

first thought that comes to mind was in 08 at the beginning of the year, i believe it was the disney clasic or some crap it was played at disney world, he helped us big time to beat georgetown and gonzaga.

I remember that...he played pretty good ball back then, but at the same time there wasn't a ton of pressure on him personally to carry the team. That could be part of it these days, he's the only senior that we expect a bunch from.

yea back then it was like wow this kid could be a pretty damn good player for us. he failed to ever improve, i hate to blame pearl for this but i dont know where else to put it, obviously somewhat on tatum himself.

The problem with most of our players is that they are role/bench players. Hall, Tatum, Woolridge, McRae and McBee would see very little time if we had a normal roster. Tobias and Hopson leaving really hurt this team obviously. Maymon has been a pleasant surprise along with Stokes coming in and contributing right away. Otherwise, we have a roster full of role type players.

The hate for Golden is unwarranted. However he does things at times (poor passes, shot selection, dribbling off the leg, overall poor game decisions, lack of lateral defense, etc) that makes you scratch your head sometimes, but he appears to always give his best. He's just in a position of having to run this team and his natural position is the 2 guard. He is Martin's best option, actually only option. As for Tatum whatever his motivation is it's not working and if I were him I would be concerned.

My biggest problem with Golden is when we need a clutch play late in a game he becomes a TO machine. I don't care if you are a 2 or the point you can't turn the ball over in them situations. Being clutch is a quality you either have or you don't and he don't.

This is very true.:hi:
except you need to add Golden to that list.

It would be a completely laughable argument. We quit more last year in games we were winning than I saw last night. They are playing as hard as any team in the past six years. The only big difference is that the talent just isn't there like it has been in the past. Maymon doesn't have a Chism or Prince to help him out, and when your second best player is a freshman, it's not going to be pretty every night.

cam played hard? Hall? No they didnt. Point is CM is calling out the mental weakness of his team, which is fine with me. Did he have mistakes against vandy? Yep. But I'm fine with him saying whatever he wants. Just as with the football coach.

I think Golden would be playing the 2 if we had a competent 1. He's only a sophomore. He'll never be like the Ky semi-pro players they get in every year, but I think he'll have been a solid player for us when his career is over.

As well as he should I believe! No excuse for Cam or Hall to play like they did against UConn and FLA and then look as bad as they did against Vandy.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal has now become a pay site. If you're posting links from that site remember many may not be able to read it.

I agree with that analysis, but I think as a team, our guys have played with heart all year. Hell, we got Yemi out there decking players at the end. All jokes aside though, Hall and Cam were pitiful, but their lack of effort doesn't characterize the entire team.

Outside of a good game or two, this team would be better off in the long run without the 3 I mentioned getting many minutes at all. That's been my stance since the preseason and hasn't changed. I don't care who the backup is.

I agree with you on that for sure. Hall is definitely going to see his minutes shrink drastically as Stokes develops. Swiperboy should stick to his flows, and Cam is too streaky to rely on.

Golden hurt his ankle last week before the UGA game in practice. Rucker tweeted about it. Don't know about his wrist.

He posted on govols247 that Golden is being bothered by ankle and wrist injuries but he won't complain about it.

Cam really needs to understand his role and stop trying to do things he is incapable of at this point. He needs to knock down open jumpers, play sticky defense, and rebound. Stop all the aimless drives into the teeth of the defense. Stop trying to take your man off the dribble. Just do what you know you can do, not what you think you can do.

The one thing Cam did last night was dribble drive. IIRC his only made FG was a dribble penetrate floater. He is usually best served as a defender and catch and shoot from the elbow for 3. However, we have a sore lack of capable penetrators and someone has to attempt to do this to extend and collapse the D. Outside of Golden, he is the only other person that really does this at all. Richardson has done this some of late, but McRae is completely out of control when he does this and we NEED someone to do this. Cam has to be the one at this point to dribble drive and kick.

He said that in the postgame last night. I wonder if that is a veiled shot at Tatum and who else?

I know everyone will say Tatum..I agree, I don't think so much Golden, but Woolridge is lazy, slow, no hustle, just doesnt play near with enough aggressiveness. and doesnt have the mental toughness either IMO.
