Martin: Some guys just don't have the right mental makeup to win on the road

Exactly. Swiper and Tatum will be gone next year and I wouldn't be surprised to see McRae transfer.

If you don't play defense, it's going to be hard to get on the court once Martin settles in. McRae didn't see the court last year because he didn't play defense and he's not seeing it this year very much because he isn't playing defense. If you can't get on the court that much with the players he has playing in front of him then I doubt he's going to get on the court once Martin gets his own guys in here.

Richardson is going to be a solid 4 year player. Washpun will be a solid player if he can work on his ball handling. I love the kid's fire and intensity. He brings it when he's on the court. I hope he commits himself to getting better in the offseason because he has a determination about him that not every player has. Yemi is a project and hopefully he'll be able to contribute as a Jr after he has worked under Stokes and Maymon once they leave next year (if Stokes goes early).

+1 great post. i really like wes' fire as well he just doesnt have it yet, i hope he really works hard in the off-season.

Sure, turnovers and spotty defense would be part mental error but this team just can't shoot the ball.

This team in all actuality can't do much of anything well. That's why if there are winning games against decent opponents it will be with their defense.

I was shocked to see that we were 3rd in the SEC in 3pt shooting heading into the Vandy game. Being that we blanked earlier this season for the first time in a LONG time and all.

yea earlier in the year when we were shooting 127,689 3's a game kind of padded our stats, we have decreased that number greatly as of late. thats good to see.

Yeah, this team doesn't have the skill on the perimeter to be jacking up 30 treys a game. McRae is very streaky out there though. He is definitely capable of hitting several in a game and then missing as many in a row the next game. Outside of Skylar he is probably our best threat from out there. Idk what happened to Golden. He was stellar from 3 early in the season... deep ones too.

yea i was going to say golden besides mcbee but lately that has looked shaky. i wonder if the ankle and wrist problems that have been referred to may be a bit worse than what they are being made out to be.

It is very possible. If we get an update from Rucker saying Golden is scheduled for wrist surgery within a week after the season's conclusion I hope a lot of people on here feel a lil bad about the way they have talked about him of late. Not having your legs under you can really affect shots from beyond the arc as well, but the whole FT shooting thing has me thinking it is his wrist much moreso than his ankle at this point. I think we are the only two people in the basketball forum tonight. lol

yea but they would require people to actually realize that a wrist issue would effect your dribbling and cause you to over compensate, and for people to realize this means they would have to be rational. you and i both know that that is not a trait that many on this board are gifted with. i dont know that it is to the effect that it will need surgery but who knows, i do feel though the more i watch him lately that something isnt right, either the ankle/wrist or maybe both. as you said this is a kid who throughout high school and college as been an elite free throw shooter, for him to miss them like he has is very troublesome. i am probably the only one, but i give him big props for not mentioning the injuries as any sort of an excuse one time. this is also a guy who just had nose surgery not even what, 2 weeks ago? alot going on with this kid, but some people really just dont think about any of these things.

Tatum??? Do you really watch the games. He makes mistakes but he hustles his ass off!!!!

I semi-agree with this, but only because I spend most of the games watching Tatum.

Reasons I agree:

1. He dives after loose balls, occasionally throwing himself into chairs and tables.

2. He hustles when his guy gets the ball on defense (mainly because he doesn't run hard enough to stay with him in off-ball situations).

3. He tries to beat his guy off the dribble. No one else other than Golden even tries (maybe McRae, but it seems to lead to turnovers for him). We desperately need a slashing wing.

Now, the last two don't usually work out very well, but still, his hustle in a 2K game would be like an 80. :p

*Note: I didn't watch the Vandy game because of family reasons, so this is based on previous play.

a lot of our walk ons would also hustle and run through a freaking wall if they were out there, the point is you have to be effective while out there. the problem i have with him driving is it usually results in a turnover, i would rather he not try to drive anymore and if he feels compelled to score just jack up a 3 or his favorite fade away he likes so much, just dont drive and turn it over anymore please.

Yeah, I hear you. I'm just saying it's not laughworthy to say he hustles, it's just laughworthy to say he's consistent, etc. I wish he would make better decisions too (and work on his ballhandling).

ive wished for those things for 5 years it's yet to happen with him so ive given up. i say start mcrae and let tatum play 12 minutes or so a game, may as well play someone who still has an upside for UT, tatum has 0.

Eh, I still say give him 20 or so because of on-ball defense. He'll have at least one good/better game like UK or UCONN in the next few weeks, even if all the others are no shows or negatives like Vandy. Start him and give him chances to shoot, and if he misses, increase McRae's minutes that game. This is assuming that McRae and Tatum are both playing hard in practice, etc.

Hahaha, thanks. :good!:

here's a thought how tatum gets minutes at home and mcrae on the road :)

in all seriousness though tatum is apparently mentally weak he has no confidence on the road, mcrae couldnt possibly be a downgrade. as i said id start mcrae period, this way you have an idea if you want him here or not next year. you arent losing much by doing this and if mcrae for some reason starts playing its a major upgrade.

I could actually live with that first suggestion, haha. Also, if/when we play bad teams I can definitely live with McRae getting more minutes since he seems to play much better against them. I hesitate to call any of our future opponents bad, just in case we lose.

yea but ccm would never go for the idea of rotating them as starters like that just not his style and honestly not smart. you could still start tatum, but just pull him shortly after and adjust minutes accordingly. as i said id start mcrae but thats just me, and no none of our future opponents are bad none of them.

Right now we are an awful road team

My guess is some of our players do have the right mental makeup to play on the road. You just have to find those players and play them. These are the players you want to develop to be our main players in every game. If your not mentally tough on the road, you won't be able to be tough at the right moments in close big games. Most games are so close, if you don't have that toughness, then you don't do your team any good. A lot of players can play in comfortable environments. We need players that can play in uncomfortable environments.
