Martin: Some guys just don't have the right mental makeup to win on the road

Swiper looks like a baller, but he doesn't jump well, is slow off the floor and is half a step slow on defense. With Swiper, Cam and McCray we arn't getting anything out of the 3 spot, and that hurts. Plus Cam and McBee at the 2 slpot doesn't usually give us next to nothing, and lately we are getting less than we need to from the PG.

Our guardplay as a whole has been lacking for weeks. Cam stepped up against Uconn, but as expected was a no-show last night. Here's to the next home game... lol, this team is not a competitive bunch on the road right now. Hopefully that is something we can fix by season's end.

Maymon has played better than anyone on here expected this season. Stokes has played well outside of last nights game. Hall has had some no-shows, but he has also had some very productive games and isn't near the foul machine I thought he would be all season. Our post play is anything but lacking IMO.

Cuonzo's just trying to deflect blame from the head coach. I've never seen a team this poorly prepared for any road game.

what would you do to this team differently? assuming they are practicing and he's teaching these players what they need to be taught and just arent listening as it appear, what would you do?

IMO if you dont have your own guys its pretty hard sometimes to get guys who were recruited to one system to play your system.

System, schmystem. It's a simple game, not rocket science. Against a hated rival like Vandy, you need to prepare your team to kick ass and take names from the git-go, not to just show up preening like kings of the world because you just happened to knock off CT at home. Especially since you're rapidly becoming known around the nation as the team that can't win a road game (not even against hapless Georgia). Wearing an orange jacket may be a nice gesture, but it doesn't win games. Aside from Stokes, the recruits Cuonzo's bringing in don't look any better than what we already have on board. That doesn't bode well for the Big Orange future.

im confused your beginning talks about tough play "kick ass and take names" then say ccm recruits dont look any better. yemi, stokes and wes probably played the hardest out of anyone, this is what you stated you were looking for wasnt it?

quite simply we didnt have the horses to play with vandy once we got down immediately by about 10. you can teach them every naismith ever said about basketball, but if the guys throw everything out the window you have told them come game time there isnt much you can do.

I hope that's sarcasm

im pretty sure he was serious. i laugh watching tatum, does anybody else notice he constantly tries to slow down the game. he'll look at golden on a break and gesture to slow down as he's huffing and puffing. :eek:lol:

Tatum??? Do you really watch the games. He makes mistakes but he hustles his ass off!!!!

Are you sure you watch games. Tatum stands around looking like he is stoned most of the time. The reason he may look like he is hustling is because he's having to always go for the ball, after he turns it over, or dribbles it off his feet.

This game said more about Vandy than us.
It was a pay back game for all the ass whippings they received from Pearl.
It was Bruce's fault.

Here is what CCM said at today's Big Orange Tip-Off Clubb meeting. I really like this guy and truly believe he is going to get it done here:

"I'm not a guy who believes in getting rid of players and all that, but you have to be honest with 'em, to let 'em know where you stand as a coach and exactly what you're looking for.''

He described his two November signees, Derek Reese and D'Montre Edwards, as long, rangy shooters who can play more than one position. Cory Stanton, a walk-on transfer, is a natural point guard who can push the offense and pressure the ball.

Should more roster openings arise from attrition, a big man would be desirable.

Said Martin, "I tell the guys now, 'All I can do is warn you. I say this in all sincerity. Now we've got guys knocking on the door. They want to be part of Tennessee basketball.'

"It's real simple. You play at a high level all the time because guys are going to be a part of this program. They know where we're headed.''

Just where is Tennessee headed?

"One day,'' said Martin, "this team will be the last team standing. I really feel that.

"I don't say that jokingly, I don't say it, like, 'Oh, man, give him another year on his contract.' I say it because I truly believe it.''

He sees what some of us have been seeing for a couple of years with some of his guys. The honeymoon is over, hopefully.

Exactly. Swiper and Tatum will be gone next year and I wouldn't be surprised to see McRae transfer.

If you don't play defense, it's going to be hard to get on the court once Martin settles in. McRae didn't see the court last year because he didn't play defense and he's not seeing it this year very much because he isn't playing defense. If you can't get on the court that much with the players he has playing in front of him then I doubt he's going to get on the court once Martin gets his own guys in here.

Richardson is going to be a solid 4 year player. Washpun will be a solid player if he can work on his ball handling. I love the kid's fire and intensity. He brings it when he's on the court. I hope he commits himself to getting better in the offseason because he has a determination about him that not every player has. Yemi is a project and hopefully he'll be able to contribute as a Jr after he has worked under Stokes and Maymon once they leave next year (if Stokes goes early).

I'm sick of hearing about the talent level of this team....do we have the talent like the top ten teams do no, but we do have enough talent to COMPETE with any team in the country we have proven that with games against Memphis (1) duke uconn Florida Kentucky and miss state....the talent should not be an excuse for the embarrassment last night nor some of the teams we've lost to this year.

And I'm sick of people acting like this is a tourney team or that the players on the roster haven't vastly underacheived even under the last coaching staff....
