Martin wants an extension and am sure a raise (rumor)

To make a football analogy, Martin still hasn't made a bowl game yet.

Yes, he's beat some ranked teams, and some pretty good ones at that, but that's the benefit of playing 30 games a year vs 12. If you field a competitive squad, you'll get some upsets.

The play down the stretch last year and this year give me hope that he'll get it done next year, but if we start slow yet again, Hart needs to seriously start looking around for someone who can get it done.

Big difference is that a football coach can make a bowl winning only 50% of his games, yet it has been proven (by Martin) in basketball that you can win 74% of your games and not make the NCAA tournament. So that logic is a little bit flawed.

Might as well. Where else other than UT can you get a raise when your on the hot seat?

Looks like CCM has been taking notes from Fulmer

Who has made any sort of statement that would make you think CCM is on the hot seat? Those who have spoken with the AD say his seat isn't even the least bit warm, and barring a catastrophe next year he will get 4 years.

No way he deserves an extension, I dont care if Maymon was hurt this past year. He still has 3 years left, do something first then we will talk.

That is this business.

IF as a AD, you believe he is the man you want, then you have to play the game even if you don't want to. If he blows it up next year and is a 3 seed in the tourney, callers will come for him. So then, does he remember your loyalty or lack thereof from 365 days prior. People gets raises in this business all the time after average seasons.

This guy gets it.

Doesn't have to be a huge raise, or even maybe any raise but something for him to remember and show your support (assuming Martin is the guy hart wants).

As you said, he blows up next and let's say painter finishes .500 again at purdue and they may be calling Zo. It's about market value, tony Barbee is making more than him, compare their records at their respective SEC schools.

If it is shake down time, I hope Hart has the sense to use it as his time to set the bar higher for an extension/raise. If he goes, he goes. Most good AD's have their next hire in their sights at all times. Oh, I forgot, Hart hires like Hamilton, in a panic. Never mind. Carry on.

I mean really, what have you lost if he goes? Even the NBA is looking at Hoiberg (Iowa State). Go get him. You want to tell me that Ben Howland wouldn't be an immediate upgrade? I like Zo and his character, but I haven't seen anything that tells me the Final Four is even a remote possibility. Hope he's not wanting an extension with what he has accomplished or else it will require a rethink on the character. Everybody is hanging their hats on next season, but that's not a given with this team. Then what happens to it when the 4 most experienced/best players leave after the season?

I disagree. Average is just that, average. Name some average coaches who received raises recently?

Not doing the research for you.

Your head is in the sand if you don't think this happens all the time at big time college football and basketball schools.

Also, he is not average. His record from the past two seasons does not put him at average in the league.

So, Martin should've been paid more from the get-go, since in the conference he's top 5, yet only paid 10th.

Martin is being paid his market value, nothing more and nothing less. Why do you think he has earned more than what the market values him at?

Because he's proven he's better than 10th in the conference. Therefore he should be paid/treated like it.

Martin deserves a year to be taken off his contract not one added to it.

I don't control what either coach makes. Neither deserve raises or extensions.

It's called market value. If that's what SEC coaches are being paid Martin deserves to be ahead of Barbee...if you feel differently provide facts not just a "both guys are overpaid" statement.

Yeah, that'd go over nicely when trying to hire a new coach. "If you finish conference play better than preseason predictions two years in a row, we will take a year off your contract." Good luck finding a "proven" coach that'll agree to those conditions. Glad you're not making the contract and hiring decisions.

No he's not. He should be ahead of Barbee plain and simple.

And I'm curious what the fox/Martin UGA/UT comparison also looks like.

I would agree if the conference was more competitive. The SEC only had three teams make the tournament.

But, despite that, you think that he should be paid that low in the conference when being compared to other teams in that same conference? How does that make sense?

I'm not saying I 100% agree he should get a raise or an extension, but you have to remember this is a business. I can see where Martin's agent is coming from...Martin has been better than Barbee since both joined the SEC and it's not really even close, but Barbee is getting paid more.

You also have to look at what is being brought in, finished what 6th in attendance? What was that report, UTMBB was 14th most profitable or something like that?

It comes down to whether hart feels Martin is his man...if he does then he will likely give him a small raise and or extension (personally I'd give small raise no extension) to show the commitment to Martin as his coach.
