Martin Was Recommended By Houston and Grunfeld

Another thing I like about Martin is he has played at a high level (Purdue All-Big 10 selection) and in the NBA and overseas. He has experienced it all and should be able to relate to the players really well. The guy seems like a first class act.

Some may be surprised that Ernie jumped back to help UT after parting ways with Bruce Pearl.
I don't know why. If Ernie loves UT, he probably would like to slam-dunk Pearl's head through a backboard right now for being so stupid. Pearl didn't need to cheat to win.

For those trashing Rick Byrd: coaching is coaching. Rick is a DAMN fine coach who I would have been ok with. To mention how good Rick Byrd would be in recruiting compared to Martin is silly as well since both have only coached at mid majors. CRB has proven his coaching ability time and time again rather than being this years tournament flavor of the month.

Martin did recruit for Purdue as an assistant though. And I'm a huge Rick Byrd fan.

If UT is making decisions based on recommendations of two ex's, then we have more problems than anyone can imagine.

Or we're smarter than guys like you imagine. Ernie Grunfeld and Allan Houston are two extremely astute people when it comes to basketball.

Who would be better than either of them at making recommendations for UT?

I don't know a lot about them, but the Purdue guys all love him (and want him back if Painter leaves), he was a big recruiter as an assistant, and his team has had a 12 game turnaround in conference play in two years. Their overall record had a 13 game turnaround in one year. Those are all things that make the hire look good. And Ernie Grunfeld knows way more about basketball than I do; given his track record, I trust his judgment.

Ernie Grunfeld knows way more about basketball than ANYONE who frequents this board. Exponentially more than most
