Martin Was Recommended By Houston and Grunfeld

For those trashing Rick Byrd: coaching is coaching. Rick is a DAMN fine coach who I would have been ok with. To mention how good Rick Byrd would be in recruiting compared to Martin is silly as well since both have only coached at mid majors. CRB has proven his coaching ability time and time again rather than being this years tournament flavor of the month.

And yet he almost didn't leave.

Eric, if Byrd turned down ETSU (or ETSU didn't try to hire him because they thought they couldn't get him to leave), then your analogy might apply. As it is, it makes no sense. My advice is to just accept that, even if you don't see it. It would be less painful.

He has a nice little program at Belmont, but if he were capable of taking the reins at a major university, I think someone would've tapped him on the shoulder by now.

He has been approached several times over the years. He is comfortable at Belmont.

Who has knocked Byrd really?

Years ago I would have said I would make that jump to a big school job every time. Now, after seeing how things go over the years, I wouldn't budge if I was Byrd or Stevens, as long as you don't question your decision. They have plenty of money. Sometimes, it's just not worth the end result to chase the dollar for a few years.

I agree completely with that.

I see Byrd the same way I looked at John Kresse at College of Charleston. Could he coach at a higher level? Yes, but why leave a place that is absolutely perfect for you?

I agree with this. I think he would fit well. Its not like he would be leaving a bad job.

Not my place to say. I just know he has. However, I didn't find this out till recently. Byrd doesn't publicize these things for pay raises and such.
He actually had a radio interview recently where he confirmed he has been approached many times for different schools. For whatever personal reason, he doesn't talk about it though.

As a Lipscomb grad, I wish he would get a job somewhere else so my Bisons could get to the tourney.

I honestly think that when I read some of these posts that I can guess the age of the poster. Sort of like one of those 'guess your weight or age guys' at the TVA&I Fair.

Nobody has been born in the last 2000 years or so that can predict the outcome of an unknown. Cue spooky music.

But it doesn't stop some folks from speaking like they know the future with such enthusism, too.

Ok, this hire maybe a great one in the end, but to sit here and act like Martin is somehow a better coach than Byrd is right now, is just absurd. I'm good with Martin being our coach, but don't sit here and try and trash a coach who has won 600 games in his career. Most coaches never get that far.

Seriously man? Yeah, Byrd has been piling up the wins in that A-Sun playing powerhouse clubs like, North Florida, Kennesaw State, ETSU, etc.. Oh, and lets not forget about the glory years coaching Maryville and Lincoln Memorial. Dude is sixty years-old, and no one has taken a chance on him in 30-plus years of coaching. There's a reason for that. If you don't think we made a better hire than Byrd, you're crazy!

Ernie Grunfeld knows more basketball than 95% of the posters on here combined(me included). Good enough for him, good enough for me.

Cuonzo thrives off of doubters... so keep doubting. I, on the other hand, love this hire and can't wait to see what Cuonzo has in store for us the next couple years.

Way to go. It's people like you that are taking away CCM's lifeblood by not doubting him. I take it that those who doubt him are the real fans and it will be because of them when he succeeds.

I don't know a lot about them, but the Purdue guys all love him (and want him back if Painter leaves), he was a big recruiter as an assistant, and his team has had a 12 game turnaround in conference play in two years. Their overall record had a 13 game turnaround in one year. Those are all things that make the hire look good. And Ernie Grunfeld knows way more about basketball than I do; given his track record, I trust his judgment.

This is what I'm going with. This guy doesn't excite me or have me dreaming of elite 8's but people that know basketball think he was a good hire so I'll wait. It's funny how some who were very skeptical of DD and his limited resume are fine to great with Martin. I suppose the records have the most to do with that? I do wonder if him being black has any sway on popular opinion good or bad. Most athletes and top recruits are but I don't see it as a useful barometer of coaching or recruiting ability.

Byrd is a great coach, but could never recruit the type of players we need. He would be an excellent fit for the Dorks if KS ever gets fired! All respect to RB, but zero chance the recruits, Hopson let alone Harris play next year for him! He needs to stay at Belmont, I would hate to see him fail in Knoxville, we love him in Nashville!

You suppose right. That's the difference. And it's an important one.
