Martin Was Recommended By Houston and Grunfeld

Why the infatuation with Byrd?
Don't see it as infatuation but when one hear's over and over why one mid-major has no experience and why UT shouldn't hire him, it wears a little thin. Or this mid-major guy can't recruit, who knows?

Hope Coach Martin does well at UT. But Byrd has done a tremendous job at Belmont. If Byrd were 10 to 15 years younger, he might have been the answer. Nobody knows. And to me that is what is so frustrating when posters (not you) feel it is their right only to have their opinions matter and to have their minnions arrogantly bash people who had different candidates in mind. And as to deferring to a chosen few well, not gonna happen with me. I have forgotten just as much basketball as the chosen ones have.

I just want to know how they know him as all, and why they gave him such a great reference in regards to the job. Did they get it from film, other coaches and players talking, TV?? I don't know, and I would like to.

Completely fair questions IMO. Obviously both of those guys know basketball and apparently like his style of play. I liked the Pearl hire if its true Grunfeld recommended him.

Did you even read his post then??

Yeah, that's pretty much saying a guy with 3 years head coaching experience is better than a guy who has won 600 games, out of the 900 or so he has coached.

IMO he is simply saying it is better to get a coach with some youth, spirit, able to recruit like a madman, and alot of fight in him. Not a coach that has a great resume but is getting up there in age approaching 60. Maybe not but that is how I took it.

He has a nice little program at Belmont, but if he were capable of taking the reins at a major university, I think someone would've tapped him on the shoulder by now.

I agree with you somewhat on that, but sometimes when coaches get dug in at a school, it's hard to move on. Even Roy Williams didn't want to leave Kansas.

Shaka planned it that way. He intentionally put them in a position to be in the play in game. He knew Vucevic and Donte Smith would miss a million shots and it gave him time to work out the kinks in his magnificent new plan.

The conspiracy theory approach.....

Kansas is a destination job. Tough to leave a place like that and elevate your career. Not the case at Belmont.

I wasn't using it as a comparison, I was just stating that coaches who have been a jobs for a while have a tough time moving on sometimes. That's all I was saying.

He wouldn't have a tough time moving on if he was being offered 4 or 5 times what he's making at Belmont.

It was KANSAS man KANSAS......to go to U.N.C......one giant to another giant.......son of a bee sting man.....

That is an excellent point. He has had a tremendous career at Belmont. We should all be so lucky.

I actually played ball (scrimmages only) against Byrd when he was at Doyle. We never (Rule High vs. Doyle High) played during the regular season. He was a tough-nosed guard. Not that you care. Just thinking that he and I are getting really old (that was nearly 40 years ago).

Right or wrong . . . Byrd just flat out doesn't look or act the part.

610 wins say otherwise. I just don't see how a fundamental coach can't come here and win at a decent clip. I could see him averaging about 23 wins a season here, even without the big name players. As long as you recruit players that fit a system, you can beat anyone, just ask VCU. Smart's living off of Grant's system and players.

That's very true. Saying that he wouldn't be my choice to coach at Tennessee is not saying that I think he sucks. He's just suited for the mid-major game, and he's very solid at it.

I see Byrd the same way I looked at John Kresse at College of Charleston. Could he coach at a higher level? Yes, but why leave a place that is absolutely perfect for you?

Eric, I see the guy live at least 2 or 3 times a year. He looks older than his age and he wanders the sideline like Lou Holtz in a sweater vest. I'm just not real sure how well he would relate to elite players.

Years ago I would have said I would make that jump to a big school job every time. Now, after seeing how things go over the years, I wouldn't budge if I was Byrd or Stevens, as long as you don't question your decision. They have plenty of money. Sometimes, it's just not worth the end result to chase the dollar for a few years.

agreed. They love the guy at Belmont and the A-Sun is never going to be a pressure cooker.
