Masters

i read or heard him say he put an extra wedge in his bag this spring to prepare for Augusta. i guess he second guessed himself out of playing it, and went with another wedge on 17. i don't know what loft he was playing as i don't recall right now.

pulled from another board, but apparently true:

Even when Sergio Garcia is not in contention at a major championship he seems to make news. El Nino shot 75-74 on the weekend at Augusta National and tied for 38th, his best finish at the Masters since 2004.

A Golf Channel reporter then stuck a microphone in front of Garcia and asked how he liked the golf course.

“I don’t like it to tell you the truth,” he said. “I don’t think it’s fair. It’s too tricky. Even when it’s dry you still get mud balls in the middle of the fairway. It’s too much of a guessing game.

“They can do whatever they want. It’s not my problem. I just come here and play and then go home. That’s about it.”

Eighteen hours later, IMG, Garcia’s management company, released an apology.

“Following my final round at the Masters yesterday, I made comments in an interview to the Golf Channel that I regret and want to apologize for. Out of frustration, I blamed the golf course instead of putting the blame where it belongs, on myself. I didn’t get it done this week. Augusta National is one of the most iconic golf courses in the game and playing in the Masters each year is an honor. I apologize to the members of Augusta National and the fans who rightfully treasure this golf course, and would like to offer my congratulations to Angel for joining the list of legendary names who have won there. I aspire to join that list one day.”

The galleries at Bethpage Black are sure to cut Garcia some slack at the U.S. Open later this summer.

nice.

his miss at the British Open did a real number on him.

Poor guy . . . but kudos to him for simultaneously committing a lewd act and letting out a fist pump and "woo".

Played with KP a couple of times in the past. His swing ain't pretty, but he hits her high, long, right to left and very, very, very.....very accurately. Nicest guy in the world.

Who's the swing coach? Which club?

I actually like his swing.

His interviews after the round were a touch of class. I feel extremely bad for the guy. I wanted him to win. For people to sit here and question Kenny, or whatever they are doing, about his play on 17 and 18, is a little comical. They, obviously, have never been in that position to know what your arms feel like, or what is going through your head. Everything happens almost in an altered state of consciousness. You try to think positive, but all you can really see is the danger, or how you can make bogey. There aren't many sports that require the precision, yet patience that golf requires. Most sports happen fast paced where you don't really have time to think, you just react. Golf, you have all the time in the world. Walking to the ball can be very lonely and take an eternity.

Tiger handles it better than most, but he has positive experiences to feed off of. Kenny hasn't put himself in that position too many times in the past. Which he said, himself. I wish he could have pulled it off, but its a hell of a lot easier to perform here on the message board as opposed to Sunday at Augusta. It doesn't get bigger for most of those guys.

I get that. But you have to admit that it's sketchy at best for a guy with Kenny Perry's length and shot shape to pull out the Driver on 18 at Augusta while protecting a 1 shot lead.

give me a break. who cares?

there's no rule that says you have to back your opinion up on the course, because, like you said, it's the internet. that's kinda how this thing works.

I don't think anybody claimed to be better than Kenny Perry. I like the guy, and I would have liked for him to win, but when a man with a 2 shot lead on the 17th teebox who hasn't made bogey in two dozen holes (and only 4 all week) finishes bogey-bogey-shouldabeenbogey-bogey, he choked. There just isn't a lot to defend out of that.

I wasn't being self righteous when I said it was comical. Bad choice of words, and for that I apologize. I was just saying its easier said than done.

From personal experience, (for some reason I don't think that will hold much weight around here, nor should it) you tend to go with the club that you have the most confidence in those circumstances. Kenny said after Saturday's round that he had never had more confidence in a driver. For 70 holes he proved it. You don't just decide to go with another club if that is the one you have been swinging best all week.

You're right about hindsight being easy, and he may have felt comfortable, but having stood behind that tee, I cannot imagine anyone thinking it would be a good idea to bomb a Driver through that chute and try to avoid the bunker; especially when their go to shot is basically a pull draw. There's just no room up there.

I'm down with this. You take the club out of the bag that brings those bunkers into play, especially when you can't account for adrenaline and you've been doomed by bunkers left on the final hole of a major before.
