Matt Barkley??? Just read in another thread

barkley is as solid an SC commit as any player in history.

I don't think we have a chance to get him either but his willingness to visit UT (if that happens) says something about our current hire. It surely can't hurt

a) Mater Dei is a usc pipeline

b) the kid LOVES pete carroll and pete loves him

c) he's a So Cal kid, likes the beach, etc

d) he's been a lifelong USC fan

edit: now if pete goes to the NFL all bets are off

I agree 100%. It looks like we will be looked at by recruits in a different more positive way. Our class may stay very strong for 2009 .

I would take Barkley over Boyd any day of the week. He's a pocket passer...

Great, more years of 8-4 coming right up. We need some mobility at the qb position. The Shuler and Martin days are 2/3 of the most successful era in modern TN football. I love Peyton as much as the next guy, but rarely did we beat FL without speed at the qb position. Actually, we rarely beat FL at all, but with their team speed, we are going to need someone who can avoid the rush when a play breaks down.

it's nice to have a qb drafted in the top 10, but that means nothing when we don't win SEC championships. I'd trade a top pro style qb for victories any day of the week.

I would hardly describe Casey Clausen as fleet of foot

Shows how much you know, Pocket passers have proven to be better decision makers compared to mobile QB'S. Your not even worth listening to, downing Peyton just because of losing to Florida.

Point is simple! Kiffin is going to get alot of players looking at UT! That, and his dad (DC) got him the job.

A Head Coach (college) does not need to be the greatest x/o guy. He needs to be full of energy and surround himself with great coaches. kiffin will do that. Can/Will he win....not sure...but it will not be because of a weak staff!

i think a guy by the name of matt leinart, who wasn't much of a runner, did pretty good with kiffen's offense.

but yet you count the pre-Spurrier years (and his 1st year)? Interesting...

Not quite. Pre spurrier years? Shuler's 1st year as starting qb had spurrier at the helm. Spurrier was head coach at Florida starting in 1990, and Shuler's 1st year was 1992.

Spurrier at Fl:

1990 Florida 9-2 6-1 1 (*) Ineligible (*) (*) 13

Jeez, and I get called not worth listening to because I think the team needs a mobile quarterback. Sue me. Nowhere did I "down Peyton" or anything about him. The fact is that we were more successful against Florida with mobile qb's during the Spurrier and Meyer years. I have nothing but love for Peyton, which I stated in my original post.

Did i down Peyton? I did no such thing.

Tee Martin beat Florida because the defense forced 6, yes 6 fumbles. Peyton's offense scored more points against UF than Tee did in either of his years, and Clawson beat them twice (and one time Spurrier was the coach in Gainesville). To say that you HAVE to have mobility at QB to win in college is a falacy.

I'm not debating Tee vs. Peyton (though I still wonder why so many vol fans hold a qb who helped us to a national championship and was the last Vol quarterback to be named All SEC in negative light). If you want to go that route, we can bring up Peyton turning the ball over "6, yes 6," times in 1996 and 1997, but I really don't want that argument.

I don't blame Peyton for those losses, but I also happen to believe we were a better team when we didn't rely on throwing the ball down the field and having a qb who could avoid the rush in 1998.

Why does anyone who doesn't act like Peyton was perfect get blasted around here? I think he pretty much was perfect, but we had great teams before and after he left.

when did this become Tee v Peyton?

Lane Kiffin will win at UT! Period. Give the man (boy) 4 years...and he will be a BIG winner!

BTW...Peyton as a true QB....Tee as a college winner! Love both...but if I had to choose for a college team...give me Tee Martin, Jimmy Streeter, Heath Shuler, or Tony Robinson! EVERY DAY! JMO!

Be careful, you might get flamed for not wanting a pocket passer around here because in some conspiracy theory, it may mean you wish to tarnish the legacy of Peyton Manning.

The comment I originally responded to said that he "wanted barclay because he's a pocket passer." Obviously, the poster doesn't know a thing about Boyd except that he's a black quarterback. In fact, Boyd's a pocket passer first, who happens to be mobile, but then goes on to say that pocket qb's have better judgement, which reads like an underhanded racist comment, considering that Boyd is a pocket passer. Typical...

OK:

Mobile quarterbacks vs. Spurrier 2-2
Non mobile quarterbacks vs. Spurrier: 1-5

Throw in Vs. Urban Meyer and Spurrier:
Non mobile quarterbacks: 1-8

Even including the Zook/Spurrier/Meyer years:
Mobile quarterbacks 2-2
Non Mobile quarterbacks 3-10

Only Zook Spurrier years:
Mobile Quarterbacks- 2-2
Non mobile quarterbacks- 3-6

(didn't count the 2004 win because Schaeffer and Ainge both played quite a bit, and both did well at times. Ainge led us down the final drive to win, but Schaeffer led us to points as well and officially started the game)
