Matt Jones comments on Stoops

He gets an automatic extension every year that he hits 6 wins, or something along those lines, if I remember correctly; think it triggers a raise too.

They changed that clause with his last extension in 2022. They owe him 44 million to buy him out right now.

"The 10th-year coach, who is earning $6.35 million this season, signed the new deal Nov. 11, a day before the Wildcats fell 24-21 to Vanderbilt. It replaces the previous extension signed in December that ran through June 2028 and deletes the clause that automatically extended his contract by one year if Kentucky won seven games and by two years for 10 wins.

I might be one of the few here that kinda likes Stoops, and I respect what he’s managed to do at Kensucky. It’s more than they deserve.
You are not. Not sure why he is getting hated on. I think he works hard. Much rather watch his Kentucky teams play than previous ones. Has had some pretty good defenses. Probably his biggest problem is not being able to build enough depth which is the same thing we have been struggling with until lately. Others don't want anyone to be good, but I like the competition. It means more when you win. Hurts like hell when you lose.

I understood the “burnt out” issue is at Kentucky. Jones claimed Stoops raises the NIL $ himself for football.
Biases aside. He deserves better than that. The man has both their only 10 win seasons since 1977. He shouldn’t be having to raise money like that. (Unless that’s a normal things and I’m not aware)

Wasn’t the 1977 UK team the one that was quite loaded with talent? Guys like Art Still and Derrick Ramsey? If so, I’m pretty sure they also got nailed by the NCAA for flagrant recruiting violations under Fran Curci, but I didn’t look it up. I watched them beat TN in Neyland one of those years, they were very good. I know the 1978 game was in Neyland in the snow flurries ( Allan Duncan kicked 5 FGs that day), so the Derrick Ramsey team must have won in 1976

If he was so burned out last year, why did he accept the A&M job? If he was looking to retire, taking the A&M job would be an odd choice.
He knew his retirement account would triple after that buyout after a couple years there and he was willing to suffer a little more for that Jimbo type money

Jones the Uk homer, said this morning on Mac & Cube that he “wouldn’t be surprised to see Stoops quit after this season”. Said Stoops appears burnt out from all he’s been doing, wanted out last year & brother Bob tells him how great “retirement” is.

Vols need to lay a big butt whoopin on him next Sat.

He can suffer a lot of bad thoughts for 8.6 million a year.

Years ago I had a running bet with a bartender in Nashville who was a UK fan.
The bet was $100 on every UT-UK football and basketball game. She thought
that she had the edge because we only played football once a year but played
basketball at least twice. Over MANY years I always won the football bet and
more often than not we split the basketball bet. After the Vols beat them three
times in basketball one year, she backed out of the bet.

Since 2016, he's almost .500 in the SEC (32-39). By their standards, that is incredible. They are barely .500 overall, all-time.
By their metrics it is very good, and I’m sure he’ll have a statue or the field named after him or something. The problem I have is that the media talks about him like he’s a top 10-15 coach and they speak and write in a way that makes it sound like he’s doing Kentucky a favor by sticking around their program. The reality is that he has the best job in Power 4 sports, or at least football bc he consistently gets away with being the 9th-12th best team in his own conference.
