That fail picture reminds me of Jennifer Wilbanks. You know, the runaway bride girl that was in the news a couple years ago and ran to Albuquerque? Well at about the same time, Schlotzski's had a new sandwich out called the "Albuquerque Turkey." On one of the tables in Schlotzski's there was one of those promotional cardboard popups with that sandwich on it. It said, "Introducing the new Albuquerque Turkey!" Underneath that written in pen someone wrote, "A Jennifer Wilbanks favorite!"

Anyways, stupid story I guess, but I laughed for 20 minutes after seeing that one.

If Hamilton had given Coach Phil a blank check for OC last year, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Coach was just too easy on everyone-players, coaches, and admin. He should have been tougher. Next job he gets, I bet he does even better than at Knoxville.

A couple of things here...

One, you assume somehow another OC would have done better. Clawson was and for the most part still is regarded as a very, very bright coach. He'd been successful everywhere else he'd coached. To his great credit, he didn't get into a public pee-pee contest with anyone but a few of his comments suggested that he and CPF didn't see eye to eye on some significant things.

Notably, a solid Little 10 school picked him up. Meyer coached at Bowling Green in case you didn't know.

Two, if what you are saying here is even close to being true then why didn't CPF say "No thanks, I don't need a raise. I care so much about UT football that I want to invest it in a staff that can bring us championships"?

I defended CPF getting a chance to keep his turnaround going... but he failed. The results clearly demonstrated that he wasn't leading in the right direction and that the game had probably passed him by.

Recruits were NOT going to continue lining up to play for a program that was widely viewed to be in decline.

You made a couple of points however in all the non-sense. CPF wasn't demanding enough and let personal loyalties get in the way of loyalty to the team. He should have canned Chavis awhile back for being a lazy recruiter and poor game day coach for instance. Another good point is that UT is a very difficult place to recruit at due to very little in state talent... and NO ONE here knows with even the slightest degree of certainty whether CLK will be able to get it done. However, CLK has already invested in recovering relationships with schools and areas that have Tenn's talent.

CPF struggled in many areas of the state for some reason.

I'm just sitting back watching... hoping for the best just like in August 08 but prepared for the worst. If Kiffin and company cannot get talent to UT then the Vols are headed toward a long stay at or close to the bottom of the SEC. Any hire would have been a risk for the exact same reason CLK is. However, the risks of keeping CPF had become greater than the risks of replacing him... that's why he's gone.

It is just Coach Phil was such a great recruiter, it is hard to compare.

It wouldn't matter even if Fulmer was a better recruiter than Kiffin(which is bs). The asst. coaches that Kiffin has brought on staff will be able to recruit much better than Fulmer's recent staffs. You are commenting about something that you really don't understand or have much knowledge on. Heck, the guys on the picture box talked about what a great recruiter Fulmer was so I'm sure no upstart California kid could ever compare!

You're right. Lane and O have recruited and coached superstars all over the US. Too bad they are at UT now. Nobody really wants to coach or play for the Vols!

Once a week, I read a post/thread that is the "dumbest ever"

This is the new "winner"

Get a clue, life, education, ect.......

Kiffin was HIRED because of his recruiting ties and his staffs recruiting ties. talent will NOT be the problem. It has been at UT for the 3-4 yrs. Not anymore.

Yes and no. Yes Kiffin was hired in part because of past recruiting success. But NO.... it is way too early to say talent has been "the" problem and that it won't be anymore.

UT ain't USC. In any given year, there will be several times more 4* and 5* players within 100 miles of USC than 5 years in the state of Tn. That would be fine if UT operated in a near vacuum like USC and could raid other states like they did in the 90's. The Trojans are THE program for 1000+ miles in any direction. USC picks and chooses while the Vol coaches have to fight tooth and nail for every player. UT has to go into the home states of schools every bit is respected as they are to get recruits. I've heard Carroll say that he only recruits kids he thinks will become first rounders when he leaves CA.

I hope that CLK and company build a mystique that kids from all over the country are just dying to be a part of... but it will be far more difficult than it was in LA.

class in America every year, he would still lose to Saban and Meyer every year almost and look bad doing it.

Without Cut to carry his bacon, he was clueless as a head coach.

Lane Kiffin could do more with a top 15 class than FullMore could have done with the best class in America.

Note to Phil from Urban:

Seeing as he has held on to some of Coach Phil's recruits. Doubt he will do as well from here on out.

come on man. i'll admit right now i'm alittle down on the class, but you have to think he got a late start this year. i don't think this will be his best class. here is a question for ya, what good does it do to get the best prospects out there if you can't coach like phil. lane will lead us is the right direction.

Well the truth is in right now. Fulmers guys would have 2 int the top 100. I bet Kiffin will never have more than that! ( sarcasm)

Kiffin and O may be good, but look how many top ten classes Fulmer was able to get to come to Tennessee. I mean he was so good, he even got Gerald Williams to commit 3 times!

Plus over the last ten years, Phil developed quite the knack for turning top ten recruiting classes into mediocre teams, I'll really miss that.
