Maymon is to UT. As Noel is to UK

I didn't think Kentucky was worth a damn with Noel.

jmo
Kentucky still sucked with him, without him they are the laughing stock of the SEC with them other so called super stars they got, coach C got lucky last year with that bunch but in the end freshman superstars will lose to a good team.

38-2 and got lucky? We had a fantastic group of players last year, a good blend of experience. No surprise we went far.

It was the first game without Noel, against a pumped up UT who is much better than their record. Even without Noel they still have more talent than most of the SEC.

You cannot be serious.

The loss of Maymon hurt but if you think he's the difference between top 10 and missing the tournament completely, I'll have what you're having.

Kentucky has never had much of a bench under Cal. It makes injuries so devastating.

Actually, their bench has shrunk each year since Cal arrived. Their depth was fine his first two seasons. They had enough quality to go 9 deep, even if Cal only chose to play 7.

Liggins, Miller, Hood, Stevenson, Ramon Harris, Dodson, and Harrellson were all members of one or both of Cal's first two teams.

His recruiting style will begin to bite him with each injury starting last year. He got lucky on the injury front last year, but wasn't so lucky this year. Its further compounded by the fact that this group of freshmen are probably his least talented group yet, and definitely the least coachable.

I agree that Maymon hurts more than some want to believe. It is evident by Stokes' improvement. Stokes wasn't used to being doubled, and it took a while for him to understand. A healthy Maymon really frees up Stokes. However, we need a true PG. I think CCM understands that because they are still evaluating, but we need someone who can handle, facilitate, and keep an opposing PG in front on defense. UK will be great next year, and Florida will be very good, especially in the front court.

If he can keep golden fresh like he's been the last 3 games then we'll be ok. I'd like to see us add another, but if we can get the past 3 games golden consistently next year we'll be fine.

And with the possibility of harrow, Goodwin. Mays, poythress, wiltjer noel ans stein all being gone the same situation awaits next year as well. Ăśber talented but extremely thin, and reliant on freshman blending together in a 6 month time period.

I agree, the possibility exists. However, the "Cal/UK has never had any depth" assertion by our UK friend, is bologna. Of the 7 players I listed, 3 played in the NBA.

I don't see Wiltjer leaving. Harrow may decide to give Europe a shot but he's probably back next year too. Stein probably stays as well. If I were a betting man, I'd say only Noel, Goodwin and Poythress go. That would give Cal a seasoned core of players with very talented Freshman coming in. That's usually a pretty good recipe for him.

Oh I know. He's always had depth and experience, that was my main concern with this years team...they had neither of those.

Wiltjer Is the most likely to return IMO, however he's also having about a good as year as he could hope. He would probably have to wonder if he returns will he be losing minutes and shots.

If harrow returns he'll be a 10 minute a night benchwarmer. The Harrison's are going to start from day one, harrow is odd man out.

Stein will depend on how the season goes. Recent mock drafts have him top 10, after seeing the Noel injury hard to think he'll pass on that grade.

Noel, Goodwin and Poythress I'd say are as good as gone.

With Maymon out we are a 600 ball club. If we had Maymon I feel that we are a top 10 team at this point. Losing your best player and the heart of your team is everything. UK showed us first hand. I for one am one of those guys who have bashed on Cuonzo this season for not being a top 25 team. But after watching UK implode i can say that I was VERY wrong. This team is going to be Amazing next year. Maymon, stokes, McRae, Hubbs, Richardson will all be scoring beasts. Our team defensive effort and intensity has grown every game this year. Hope to carry that into next season and sweep the mildcats, gators, and bulldogs next season

Top 10 in what?

Maymon doesn't make anywhere near the same impact on defense, and Martin has still made some very questionable decisions like allowing McBee to defend actual good players (ex. Marshall Henderson). That being said, it's hard to overstate how big a loss Maymon was, especially considering how many issues we have with ballhandling.

They're hurting more. Noel was averaging 4.5 blocks per game. Maymon is not that kind of defensive presence. However, Maymon being absent is way more detrimental to our offense because of what he does for Stokes.

So does it not come close to evening out? Maymon scored more than Noel, and Noel blocked more shots than Maymon. IMO their importance is very similar.

Wiltjer and Harrow don't strike me as NBA talent right now so I don't see them with much choice in things. WCS might be projected top 10 now, but the last 6 games are going to expose him I think. After his effort vs Tennessee Saturday a team would be foolish to take him that high.

UT had the whole season to adjust. Given the same time we might have done the same.

But it was a perfect storm we faced. UT was amazing and UK was equally as bad.

ky doesn't have the bench to adjust. if they had lost noel in the first game of the season they would have been one of the bottom 2 or 3 teams in the sec.

Stokes may go pro after this year.

He (Stokes) is rising and getting the media attention with his stats and production, but he's another solid season away. There are still facets to his game that he needs college playing time to improve on. He and Maymon make a great duo in the post and if Maymon comes back in great form and shape this team will battle. Stokes is much like Sullinger was at OSU. But at this point he would be a late 1st round pick (no guaranteed $$$$$) to a 2nd rounder. His Junior campaign should be great and put him in the lottery.
