McElwain to be next Florida coach (merged)

Which means we get the Titans.

I think we can beat 'em once the beef shows up at DT.

I can't see McElwain beating out Jimbo Fisher in Florida for recruits. If Florida does this it means continued dominance by FSU.

Don't know why it would change with him moving to UF; McElwain is a recruiting rock star and was the primary on guys like Julio Jones, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Amari Cooper, Dee Hart, and Phillip Ely. And he snatched lots of great players out of Florida while he was at Bama.

He kept up his trails in the state too, even while at CSU; I think he's got a half dozen or so Florida kids on his roster, has one already committed in this class, and was recruiting several others from the state.

It's no small feat getting kids from Florida to move all the way over to Colorado to play in a smaller conference at CSU. They're not the best Florida has to offer, but still they could've stayed close to home and played at similar programs.

Saban was quoted today saying he's the hardest working assistant he's ever had.

Good reminder that even well funded, highly recognized programs aren't stealing top coaches.

Volnation would have gone ape**** if this was the first guy on our list a few years back. It seems like Florida is realizing that tradition does little to sway the big fish.

If you guys had hired McElwain a few years back Volnation would be a silent place today because y'all would probably already be back to competing.

Can't be too exciting for the Florida faithful. Muschamp was the much bigger name when they hired him

Oh, I don't know, the last time Foley hired the MWC Coach of the Year, back in 2004, it turned out pretty well. If Gator fans aren't excited about this hire, they either can't read or haven't been paying much attention to cfb the last few years.

I remember in Bama's 2009 NC year, in the SECCG against us, McElwain rolled right over us, and our defense was Top 3 nationally. In their 2011 NC year, Bama's was the only offense in the SEC that averaged over 200 yards per game both rushing and passing.

As for who's the bigger name at the time of their hiring, . Muschamp had never even been a head coach before, much less turned a program around as a head coach; he's hardly a bigger name than a guy who built and directed 2 NC offenses at Bama, and took a CSU team who had gone 3-9 and 3-9 the 2 years before his arrival, and went 4-8, 8-6, and is now 10-2 with a MWC COY award.

Anyway, I haven't heard a single person say it's anything but a great hire...

Florida fans rejoice. @CoachMcElwain is the real deal and will have tremendous success in Gainesville. Congratulations to Gators everywhere.

Former Bama WR Jared Watson "@JaredWatson38: Florida is about to get really good. REALLY FAST."

In Jim McElwain, I think Jeremy Foley just hired the next Urban Meyer at Florida.

. @CoachMcElwain will bring UF a needed offensive shake-up, like Urban Meyer brought, without the baggage Meyer left behind. Excellent hire

Cecil Hurt @CecilHurt
To my friends who cover Florida: you win today. Mac is smart and accessible. And he will win games. @CoachMcElwain

Recruits are very positive about this hire for the most part.

Similar tweets from Julio Jones and Mark Ingram floating around out there too.

I'm glad we could get the buyout reduced to $3 mil over 6 years, and a game at our place for $2 mil that is the kind of game we'd have had to schedule and pay a smaller school anyway... with McElwain paying $2 mil himself. Guy must have really coveted the job to pay that much of his own buyout; but I imagine if he's successful that'll all get made up with bonuses anyway.

But even if we couldn't get it reduced I'd have still wanted us to pay it, because we most definitely could've done worse. Did y'all see who Nebraska got stuck with?

Glad you asked the question! How about playing Oregon back to back, Oklahoma back to back, Alabamba every year, instead of Georgia Southern (sorry I forgot they smoked some gator meat), and not worrying about the Packers.
:hi:

Flame away gator troll!
:loco:

I missed where I took shots at Tennessee's schedule, but thanks for the response, and the strawman.

We play FSU every year and a damn tough conference schedule, which recently has included Alabama more often than most other West teams not named LSU.

And it wouldn't be a GoVols15 post without bringing up Georgia Southern....a team who accomplished something UT hasn't been able to do in over a decade.

No. Miami since yall are too scared to play them anymore and have taken them off of the schedules....

True story!

So in summary, UF's OOC schedule should consist of:

- FSU (they aren't going anywhere, nor do we want them to)
- Miami (because we shouldn't be scared of them, and they could use the full stadium every other year)
- A top tier OOC program outside of Florida (Wisconsin? Oklahoma? Perhaps UCLA or USC?)
- And a cupcake like Georgia Southern who might actually beat us again.

LW, you stoked about this hire? I personally think it is really solid. My big fear was RR landing in Gainesville. Don't know much about how well this coach can recruit, but Floridas offense should be much improved next year

Rich Rod would have been a splashier pick for sure, but McElwain is a very solid hire. Proven offensive mind with over 20 years of coaching experience and a couple NCs as Saban's OC. We could have done MUCH worse.

You're right, the primary question mark about McElwain is his ability to recruit. UF lost its mojo with South Florida recruits, and we need to get it back quickly.

You do know that his CSU class is currently ranked 117 out of 134 teams, right? That is FAR from a "rock star". His highest class when at CSU was the mid 80s. I understand that is is CSU, but when Middle Tn St is beating you in the rankings, you are not a "rock star".

And of course he recruited well at Alabama. Who hasn't went to coach at bama over the last 7 years and not recruited well. It's almost a no effort needed recruiting school at this point.

You florida guys have a bigger man crush on a 3 year head coach than Tennessee did when we hired Butch. In my opinion, he could go either way. But I do remember Muschamp going to be the second coming of Christ for you guys when he was hired, so you should be a little gun shy about calling him a "rock star"

:ermm: so fsu doesnt compare ro those teams i guess?

I'll be more pissed at Foley if you gators send Muschamp to USC than your new coach. I could see UF & USC becoming a down and dirty grudge match. Muschamp would be the kind of spark to handle day to day stuff and let Spurrier show up on game day and flash that **** eating grin as his offense rolls up 40 when it only needs 10.

If Foley opens the check book for the rumored staff then Everyboby better watch the ***h out. SOFla, Ga and NC will be hit hard.

Last MWC guy worked out well for us. Solid resume and X's and O's guy. Florida needs a guy who can develop talent. Jumbo runs a clown show in Tally bur that sob can evaluate and develop talent.

Hopefully Coach Mac does the same for UF.

Thanks for you info on JM. Took it back to GB..hope u don't mind.

Not at all. CJMc did a lot for CSU and our city of Fort Collins. I have a great deal of respect for him and I'm happy that he has made a huge step for himself and his family. Obviously, as a VOL fan, I cringe at his choice of schools...but in the end, I honestly think yall just hired the right guy and he is going to bring Florida back to prominence. Guarantee you his first objective will be getting the right QB in there and developing him...so it might take a year or two.

This reminds me of a scene in the movie, The Missing

Tommy Lee Jones is talking to an Indian Scout in Apache

Jones tells him that he could still be put on a prison train to Florida

The Indian say " I don't now this Florida"

Jones replies " Its a dung heap of a swamp"

From my experience with CJMc, one of things I think you Gator fans will really come to like about him is his charisma and like ability. He's a great guy, and will develop some sort of building block and goal setting tag line for yall...like "brick by brick" or "the climb"....and he'll promote tha til you buy into it...well after the players have already bought into it.

He's very intelligent and the players LOVE him...he will never misrepresent your school or blow up on the sidelines like Chump did...I really hate that yall hired CJMc...

Not to say he won't get in a refs face...cuz he will. But he's very professional and carries himself like a true HC.

Damn it.

Get as many shady disconjointed personalities as you can. Sounds like a recipe for total success..cough Kiffin cough

decent hire, but probably doesn't have the stuff to outrecruit, outcoach and beat saban at alabama.

The same GSU team that went 9-3 and won the Sun Belt this year, their 1st season in the conference I might add.

The 2007 ULM team out of the Sun Belt that beat Bama and Saban wasn't even the conference champ, and went 6-6 that year.

Regardless, here's hoping McElwain has no such growing pains; unlike Muschamp, he comes in with head coaching experience, so I think it'll be a smoother transition for him.

True story!

:eek:k: Actually SEC rules ruined that rivalry game; back in the '90's the conference mandated a certain number of home games for all SEC teams, and another home 'n' home with an in-state rival just wasn't feasible.

But even if it was, why should we handicap ourselves further by playing yet another OOC foe that would be a tougher matchup than most other SEC teams' tune-ups or OOC opponents?

Our schedule is typically Top 5-10 anyway, and is often the toughest in the SEC; so we have nothing to gain or prove in the strength of schedule world.
