MD RB Marshawn Lloyd (uscjr transfer)

AP suggesting he won't visit now. Potentially USC bound.

I guess we slow played him and lost out. Damn. I understand not wanting to see current players transfer out, but if you have a chance to upgrade in the portal, you need to do it. I hope this hesitation with working the portal isn’t something Heupel has permanently. We need to be upgrading the talent of our roster as often as we can.

Nice player but not a critical need. With Seldon potentially playing several positions we have 6 RBs. Probably will redshirt Bishop unless we have multiple injuries. Next year ideally if Small, Wright and Sampson each get 12-14 rushing attempts per game, Milton gets 4, Keith perhaps some spot time or short yardage attempts, Sheldon gets a couple of jet sweeps, and we lean on running game a bit more we may be able to get up to an average of 240+ yards per game rushing.

Cautiously optimistic that our offensive line will improve with better depth although replacing Wright won’t be easy. Milton just needs to avoid sacks and throw the ball away quicker if play doesn’t develop.

As I said before, back when everyone was wanting him, he's not elite. He was highly rated coming out of high school but he hasn't done much in college. People get this "grass is always greener" mentality with the Portal. I'll take my chances with the guys on the roster who have been putting in the work to be Vols. Now if it's a clear, can't miss impact player, that's one thing, but Lloyd is not some can't miss guy. Arguably he's been a bust at South Carolina vs. what was expected of him.

Hard to say how he would do in our system. I'm fine with our RB room. Pleased with the talent we have coming back, the new freshman, and the '24 recruits we are in on.

Averages a first down every 2 carries this year and scores almost 10 touchdowns even though he got injured and he’s a bust. Yeah, ok dude. Keep throwing your little chart up there like you’re proving everyone wrong.

Our RB1 averaged 4.7, he’s a bust too huh?
He has 800 yards in 3 years. That's not what you are looking for when you sign a 5 star back. I've said he's no better than who we already have, ever since he hit the Portal. The guy is not the elite back y'all are acting like he is. Now if Nick Singleton from Penn State or somebody like that hits the Portal, I'm all-in, but this guy is no loss and I said that two weeks ago when everyone thought/hoped he was coming here.

Honestly, I'm not expecting this guy to make much of a contribution next year.....

How do you know he's hesitating to work the portal? Heupel would never try to upgrade talent at the expense of team culture. A lot of folks just focus on the talent but these portal players have to be a good fit in the locker room as well.

UT's leading rusher was Jalen Wright with 875 yards on the season (to Small's 737). Wright averaged 6.0 ypc and had 10 TDs. He's the starter in 2023.

He would have been a good add, but not a position of need. Really want a good CB, another TE and potentially 1 more DE. OL might be needed depending on who transfers. RB, LB and WR to me are in good condition and have good depth. RB isn't elite, but actually in good shape.

Which stat wasn’t correct?
Statistics are making sense of numbers. Understanding their story.

You- Small has more TD’s than Lloyd, he is better.

Someone who understands statistics- Small has more TD’s than Lloyd, is he better? How many games did they both play? How many points did their offenses score? How were their OL’s? How many carries? And so many other variables.

It is fine if you want to say Small is better. But citing their TD number as black and white evidence that Small is better is shallow at best.
