Meaningless bowl game

If the Orange Bowl is nothing more than a meaningless game, why watch it? Why play it? Why should we be excited about it? I mean why should any of these NFL-ready seniors or underclassmen play? If it's so easy for these players to simply opt-out and not compete why play the games? Who wants to watch a glorified scrimmage between teams playing "the next man up"? Why would I want to spend thousands of dollars to go see a game that is meaningless? Why would I want to invest in the season knowing that it won't matter unless we make the playoffs? I don't really want to see the stars of tomorrow, I can see them next year. I want to see the stars of today.

We haven't been to a bowl game of this caliber for more than a decade, but it's meaningless.

This is the start of next season. It does matter because we will be looking at how our team will perform next year.

Bowl games have always been cash cows. If they want to keep star athletes engaged and want them to play in their games; they are going to have to incentivize them to do so. The bowl sponsors should be using NIL to promote their products and the athletes playing in the game. This opt out **** stops the second they realize more fans will tune in and actually engage their products if our players are involved and endorsing them. There is an untapped opportunity here.

It’s far from meaningless. We only have 2 players that have decided to opt out at this point. Tillman has been battling injuries all year, he needs to. If Hyatt gets hurts then he drops in the draft. Even if Hyatt plays he not climbing in the draft any higher than what he is at right now. He is projected a 1st round pick. Tillman projected 2nd round. If Hooker was 100% I actually think Hooker plays and so does Hyatt. But it’s no secret that Milton isn’t Hooker and won’t help Hyatt draft stock in just 1 game. We have a deep WR room and will be ok. Tillman being out isn’t a big deal as he played in like 4 games this years. When Hyatt was banged up, White stepped in Mickey for him. Actually when Bru, White, Keaton was on the field at the same time the offense didn’t miss a beat.
But I was actually surprised Hyatt chose to opt out. He is 39 yards away from being the All -Time Single Season record hold for receiving yards. He would have gotten that the 1st quarter most likely. Him not going after the record is a selfless act with in itself. He could had very easily said I’m going for the record and once he got it he would opt out. What would you say then? He’s selfish and only cared about himself? I respect him for his decision and he made a good business decision.
Look at Hooker if you have any questions why to opt out. Hooker had a freak non-contact injury. Now that he has a torn ACL he will drop to the middle to back end of the draft now. He would have been drafted around 2nd round most likely if he don’t get hurt. Now he’s looking at a 3-5th round pick. No need to risk a multi million dollar contract and large sign on bonus for 1 game.
Ohio State had a back up running back to enter the portal today. A running back that had over 500 yards this season. It’s not only in bowl games, it’s also happening to current playoffs teams right now.

Really the regular season games mean more and it's to try and win the SEC and make the playoffs. When it's a 12 team it will be important to host a playoff game.

And a lot of posts are meaningless but we still read them.

To the OP, you know, you don't have to watch the game if you don't want to.

These games mean a lot to the players. Get over yourself.

Sometimes “context” actually matters.

“By all means YOU don’t have to invest……but I can assure you these guys have invested more than you or I have ever thought about.”

I was saying if the OP didn’t want to watch or invest that’s on him……..but the players have actually invested in this program.

I personally don’t think the bowl games are meaningful………in the grand scheme of things…….like maybe they used to be or it’s not likely to impact a program (for the most part).

They are definitely meaningful to those who play, coaches, ect. They certainly have “some” meaning to us fans.

LOL I was being facetious. Read many post in the thread about Hyatt opting out where it was stated "its a meaningless bowl game" "glorified scrimmage" etc. My point is that it's certainly not meaningless and that every game is important.

for me they are still exciting and fun to watch, however I guess folks may have different thoughts on “meaningful.”

I personally don’t think a post season game between KY & Iowa or even Bama and K-ST is “meaningful.”

Could be fun to play in, exciting to watch, bring in some revenue………just don’t think they’re very meaningful (only my opinion).

Define meaningful? What makes it lack meaning

Worry about what you got and not what you don’t.

It’s not meaningless to the kids who are playing.

It’s not meaningless to coaches.

It’s not meaningless to the fans of the university of Tennessee.

The most important part of the bowl game are the 15 extra practices for the players returning next season.

I think it’s asinine for grown adults to get angry at kids for doing what is best for their families. It’s like they have never left a job to go somewhere else for more money.

This flat nails it. It's grown adults butthurt that kids who busted their ass all season and put themselves in a position to do what they love for a very good living might consider that over what might be a fun game, but is still an exhibition.

And regarding the comment that bowl games haven't mattered since before the BCS, the reason that's true is because before the BCS the bowl games played a big part in determining the national champion, and it was a completely different world in CFB. I can remember a ton of big bowl games from the '70's thru the '90's, but this century? I'm hard pressed to remember any. To be honest, I'd go back to the way it was pre-BCS in a second, controversy and all.

We just had a perfect storm of bad that hit at the south Carolina game if Hooker didn't blow his knee and fumble who knows how the game ends and if we lose then probably just Tillman opts out. One good thing is we get to see what Milton can do. And see what we got for next year.

Why would it be less meaningful than, say, playing in the 1995 Cotton Bowl or the 1996 Orange Bowl? Back then if you weren't ranked in the top three or four, you weren't going to win a national championship by winning your bowl. Yet people went and watched and loved it! I don't see the difference--we won't win the national championship, but it's still a good game to watch against very good competition.

You're ridiculous. Until you show me a teammate of Jalin Hyatt who is pissed about him opting out, STFU. He played with and for his team and if they're supporting his decisions, I support his decisions.

You're one of those "it's all about the team" guys so listen to what the team thinks.

But mostly, STFU. It's not your war to fight. It's their team and their decisions.

It's as meaningless as any other game that a team plays when not in title contention. But it's fun. We're matching up to a good team on a big stage. And it gives next years squad an extra month of practice.

Relax dude. Watch if you want to. Or don't.

If you're upset about opt-outs, get over it. These guys would be nuts to risk their futures. And if it were your kid, you would tell them the same thing.
