The only meaning bowls have ever had is whatever the fans have given it. They have never really mattered. There was just nothing better to get excited about, so you got excited about bowl games. Now with the playoffs there is less shine on the bowl games, but they are still just as important and meaningful as they were pre playoffs.
It's a chance to see more football, no idea why you guys want less. I will watch every bowl game I can before the long dark void.
It's a chance to rep other players. Try out new things. Play teams we normally wouldnt.
It's still exciting for me as a fan of college football as a sport. I dont know these teams, so some starter being out doesnt hurt me.
And now with all the opt outs it's an even better indicator of what your teame I'll be like next year. So if you want meaning, the other bowl games will/should give you a good idea about the preseason rankings, and we have seen those matter. A one loss OSU got treated much differently than a 1 loss Tennessee. Preseason bias, earn it in the bowl games.
And that doesnt even cover the additional money for the school, or the gifts and experiences for the players. A reward for them for a successful year. A chance for non local fans to see their team. A chance to spread your brand for recruiting.
I see plenty of meaning. Only issue is people getting distracted from what used to be the focus in the sport. Just because things have changed doesnt mean your enjoyment has to change too.
