Ha, ha: Only rubes/idiots/MAGA distrust the mainstream media, and the reason there is distrust is because corrupt, dishonest politicians like to deflect their flaws, crimes, mistakes, questionable decisions by blaming the media. Look at DeSantis--the biggest/smallest d-ck in America. He attacks any reporters who asks him a tough question because he doesn't want to deal with tough questions or decisions that could reflect poorly on him. Blaming the media has been a conservative/GOP tactic for years--look at the gangster with all his "fake news" bull$hit. The only fraudulence is coming from trump---fact. In fact, the U.S. media is one of the major strengths of our democracy and our system. If conservatives had their way, their would be no reporting on corrupt public officials or feckless policy decisions; the "news" would be not much more than firemen rescuing cats from trees. That is the way they are. Look at the rubes who think that the gangster has never done anything wrong and the media/Dems are just out to get him. Their naivety is only exceeded by their bias and stupidty; the man has been a walking police/ethics blotter for decades. Do rubes realize how much corruption there would be in America without our mainstream media? This is why the GOP has taken a turn toward fascism: they would get rid of all investigative reporting and turn the U.S. into a country resembling Russia--with the government controlling the media. That's a gangster/tiny DeSantis wet dream.
Don’t forget that blockbuster story about Russian bounties on US troops. Of course it turned out to be complete bs.People don’t trust the mainstream media because of the mainstream media. They are mouth pieces for the Democratic Party.
How else do you explain years of faulty reporting on Russiagate? They all reported the same garbage. So much of it was easy to debunk, but not one of the major outlets could dig a little and get up the cajones to break ranks? I guess they weren’t interested in truth.
How do you explain the COVID debacle? Why no diversity of thought? All of them with the same condescension and talking about the “science”. So much of what they reported was flat out incorrect. Is it too much to ask for one of them to simply point out how the term science was being perverted? Again, they didn’t want to break ranks with the official stance of government.
I could go on and on, but you bet the point. The media is supposed to challenge government, challenge conventional wisdom, provide a broad range of viewpoints, and do some basic fact checking / validation before running with big news stories. They don’t do that anymore.
It’s all good, too, because they have rubes like you who are waiting to be told what to think.

Didn’t he just step in? Wasn’t he the guy trying to bring them more to the middle post trump?
Agreed. Cultural shifts are challenging. The bigger the shift, the harder the challenge. He needs more than a year to show results with a big shift in strategy.
My read on it is he lost confidence from his staff precisely because he was managing a shift in direction. The Trump town hall seemed to be one of their big gripes. IMO, the right move would be to weed out the staff who don’t get on the train. It’s the only way to get where he wants to go.
If his staff is allowed to call the shots it spells trouble, because they are partially responsible for the current state of affairs at the network.
