Memphis lands Xavier Henry

.........and going to the Final Four, being drafted in the 1st round, and a seven figure salary. Tragic.

Only way series ends is if football ends. No offense, but if I had to choose I would rather play Carolina, Syracuse, Duke, Kansas, UCLA, etc. than the Vols. If the Tiger program wants long term to be considered with those elite BB programs, we need to be playing and beating them on a regular basis. Of course some won't play us.

Memphis needs to start beating us before they move up to the big boys.

You see, Memphis is chasing the blue bloods of BB (UCLA, Kentucky, Duke, Gtown,Carolina, Kansas) and is competitive. Don't need a second rate program nipping at our heels while we're trying to catch the big boys.

Since when does consistently losing to a team = having them nipping at your heals?

I'm a season ticket holder also. Last year the Gtown game was louder and had higher attendance than UT game. And it was an 11 AM tipoff. Heck, the Gonzaga game 3 years ago had a more raucous crowd than the UT game that year. I'm for a neutral site game that simulates the tournament, is easy to get to, and increases $$ to the U of M.
There is no way I can agree with that. The UT-UM game was THE best atmosphere I have seen at a Tiger game in a few years. Now the Gonzaga game was pretty rockin' that year when Morrison was lighting it up (and asking for a beat down from Shawne). Maybe you didn't think it got as loud because of the mixed crowd not cheering at the same time.

Memphis should not be playing any SEC schools in BB that will not play us home/home in football (see Arkansas and Mississippi) at least every other year. Our football program needs a shot in the arm attendance wise and $$ wise.
SEC schools don't need Memphis in basketball enough to feel the need to be locked into a football contract. Tennessee has a home and home with Kansas for example.

Syracuse has a ton more tradition and success than UT. They've one a NC and been to 3 Final Fours. Usually a guarantee for the Big Dance 4 out 5 years. And a classy coach.
Granted I really like Johnny Flynn, I would take a home and home with UT anyday over a home and home with Syracuse. Great, they won a championship when Carmelo stopped by, but I think Pearl will have UT at a high level (at least as high as Syracuse) for years to come. Add to that the obvious in-state rivalry......THAT is hard to beat.

Also, time to return the favor from the 80s. Remember when the Vols wouldn't play the Tigers back in the Kirk years. Series record would be quite different if Defoe hadn't chickened out. If you remember, the series was mysteriously restarted after we went on probation.

As long as you play in that notoriously prestigious conference you play in, you can't even begin to hope to be one of the elite of college basketball. Seriously, your conference is one of the laughingstocks of college basketball. You are nowhere near a Carolina, Kansas, or UCLA in basketball tradition.

WTF? Nipping at your heels? Last i checked, Smokey ain't nipping at your heels. He has been mauling your tiger on your turf and his. If anyone is nippin, its the Memphis program.

Don't be an arrogant fan. The rivalry is good for B-Ball and the state of Tennessee in general. Look at the exposure that one game gave both programs. Recruits from around the nation are looking at both programs and the rivalry between UT-Memphis.

Who is DeFoe??? Is he a colleague of Don Devoe? Stop living in the past. focus on the future.

Jeez.

Maybe they can make Henry eligible immediately. Tiger High struggled today with UT Chattanooga.

Well I think if they played right now we would win by 26 or so. TN looks better right now, we have just got to keep getting better and hopefully we can make a run in the dance, I am so tired of hearing Memphis fans talking about how we have never made it past the sweet 16.

How did UTC play Memihis that close? Anyone watch?

These Tigers don't have the killer in them that last year's team had. Last year a 20 point lead became a 30-40 point lead and the opposition was demoralized into the reality they could not win. Tonight they got up by 19-22 a couple of times and let up on intensity and perimeter defense. UTC guard was filling it up from 3. Play like that tomorrow against USC and we will get drilled.

Until the Vols match our tradition (i.e. Final Fours), they will always be Tennessee's second team. The following basketball powers have managed at least 1 FF trip since 1979: Minnesota, Miss. St., Georgia, Depaul, Indiana St., UMass, Utah, George Mason, Providence, Houston (3), Penn, LSU (3), UNLV (3), Ga. Tech (2). Heck UAB has been to 1 less Sweet 16 in the same period as the mighty Vols.

I am focused on the future. 2010. We'll take lumps this year, but next year will be repeat of 2008 + 1. Booking hotels for Indy right now. With Henry and Wall in the backcourt it's a lock.

Again, good luck with that. I am looking forward to this year. Seems from the talk around here, Memphis and Kentucky have conceded and think their 2009 fab freshmen will lead to a Tiger/Cat championship in 2010. Can't wait for that make believe final.

Agreed.

Agreed to an point. I am not sure it would be 26 but UT definitely has looked more cohesive and confident. Memphis just has too many young players getting considerable minutes (not using that as an excuse). Lack of PG play and a player with killer instinct that can take over a game is hurting them right now. Not sure if that will get resolved this year or not.

Thanks for the history lesson and so nice to see a true Tiger fan writing off this season already.

Also, not that I wouldn't love to see it, I am not holding my breath on Wall coming to here.

The Vols are far and away Tennessee's first team in every collegiate sport. Memphis is a distant second who when they get good, Tennessee goes and beats them to keep them in their place.

Why, then, have you decided to register and post at one of said "second rate" program's most popular message boards? If you didn't care and/or weren't concerned, you wouldn't be here. Nice try, tool.

And in the future, please don't use the terms "our" or "we" when discussing the Memphis basketball program. Don't flatter yourself.

Series record would be quite different if Defoe hadn't chickened out.

Well, they've had every chance to change that in the past few years. It hasn't happened.

This cat needs to worry about UAB before crowning himself " the new Duke" on his "second-rate" rivals message board.

I forwarded this thread to a friend of mine and got this reply:

That guy is an idiot. He keeps talking about tradition and “our” history of final fours. We’ve been to two. And they were 35 years apart. This guy makes me embarrassed to be a Tigers fan. And you can put that on the message board. The Vol fans are right. Until we beat them in their own house, we can’t talk about how much better than them we are.

Not conceding, just realistic. Not like the Vol fans who think their team, who has never advanced past a Sweet 16, is suddenly going to win the NC because they beat UTC, UTM, and MTSU.

Same folks who said in past that Wagner, Rose, Henry were coming are saying the same about Wall.

First of all who cares about this thread? Move this to the Tiger High board if you have one. Bottom line is no
CDR and Rose equals early exit in tourney and another A....... whipping in TBA!
