All 20,000 fans they have. The reason Memphis will never get in a big time conference becuase they are terrible, and I mean terrible at football. THey can hardly go .500 in the C-USA so what do you think would happen to them in a major conference. ANother reason is because they dont have fans, and they can not fill up the stadium(I am still waiting on the anwswer about the stadium CALISKING) and the Liberty Bowl is a dump compared to some of the football stadiums in the south.
You actually never asked a question. Just made a statement. The reason the LB doesn't fill up is because of 2 reasons: losing and the opponents. Same reason Neyland didn't sell out this year.
Would you spend a beautiful fall day watching SMU, Arkansas State, or Tulane if there were something better to do? Would you miss the Georgia game?
Football program is in a "chicken or egg" dilemma. We need better recruits, to win more, to generate more $$, so we can get in a BCS conference, so we can build better facilities, that will help get better recruits, so they can win more......
The University is taking steps that will make the program attractive to a BCS conference when the next split comes. Have just completed a softball facility and golf facility. Brand new baseball facility and offices to be complete in 2010 and new FB weightroom/turfroom set to complete 2010.
Most of these have come from private donations, which have risen every year for the past 5 years. Because of TBR, Memphis has had to wait in line on projects with the likes of MTSU, Tenn Tech, etc. There is real possibility of Memphis splitting from TBR and having its own Board that can lobby directly to the State.
The LB is owned by the City of Memphis, not the University. The City gives the University a cheap lease and is responsible for all repairs, updates, etc. Alumni and donors want an On Campus Stadium that costs $$$. Administration likes the cheap rent and 0 maintenance cost. There is also a political aspect that would rival War and Peace if I started on that.
Site lines are actually better than most stadiums I have been in. Not really a bad seat there - except for fact that you are watching terrible football. As far as concessions, bleachers/box seat ratio, parking, and restrooms LB is similar to other stadiums I have been in. Luxury boxes are lacking. Again, city owned.
