Look, in short, I feel that Pastner is the Ron Zook of NCAA basketball. He will keep recruiting, but won't ever make anything of the recruits he brings in. When he is let go, and a real coach is hired... Memphis will be a scary team provided the incoming coach can continue to recruit at the top.

I can't help but feel like you are on here kicking someone when they are down. UT has fared well against Memphis in head-to-head games for the past 5+ years. Beyond that... Memphis was vastly ahead of UT for a while, and there is no denying that. Both programs are in a current state that could go either way. Pastner could gain control of the reigns, pull em the right way, and win a NC for you guys... or he could continue to stumble with top talent, have more players disrespect him and end up kicked off the team, and he could squander til he is replaced. Either scenario is just as probable IMO.

UT is at a similar place. We have a lil talent on the roster, a guy who has shown the ability to coach well but his recruiting prowess has only been for someone else. He did a great job of recruiting for Painter at Purdue, but how will he recruit for himself and UT remains to be a question.

I'll say this, if we could somehow merge our teams in some hypothetical scenario where CCM has Memphis' talent... We could both compete with Cal and UK... lol

Pastner will leave Memphis for a job at Arizona or another top tier job. I'd be shocked if he was ever fired. If, for some slim reason, he can't make it click as a coach, it's going to be because he's not good at handling the egos and personalitie of 18-22 year old kids, not because he doesn't understand the game.

And I'm only returning the ribbing that UT fans were throwing Memphis' way 2 years ago. Strap yourself in. The ride is going to be bumpy, and I'm speaking from experience. CCM is going to be a good coach, but I'm afraid UT fans won't give him a chance, just because he's not Pearl. Memphis fans hated Cal across the board when he left, whereas a good deal of UT fans would kick CCM to the curb and bring Pearl back in a heartbeat. I just want CCM to get a fair shake at UT because he sounds like a high-character coach (something sorely lacking in the sport today), and I want to see him succeed.

I don't believe I have ever said he doesn't understand the game. I believe his lack of success is mainly due to not being able to control his players and their egos. If he finishes 4th in CUSA again and has a seed lower than 10, his seat will begin to get very hot, especially with an early exit. I think Pastner will be a very, very good coach in time. I think he was just given a job that was to big and to soon. I think there is a culture among the team that looks at Pastner as more of a peer than a mentor/coach and that is hard to overcome once it has started. He may prove me wrong, it wouldn't be the first time, however; that is how I see it playing out.

Pastner had the talent to make the tournament his first year. CCM doesn't. Simple as that.

UT has been the "we're gonna do this" kings for years.

MAKE A FINAL 4. JUST 1 OF THEM. It doesnt have to be 3 of them like Memphis has. JUST MAKE 1.

The Vols are going to be woefully awful for years to come. It wont surprise me at all to see your AD cancel the series w/ Memphis once you lose 2 or 3 in a row. Ya'll did that in the 70s and 80s and acted like you were too good to play us. The reality was your chicken sh!t coaches didnt want any part of Bartow or Kirk's teams. You even ran and hid for a few years after Memphis beat Buzz his 1st or 2nd year. TN will try to hang on to that all time series lead b/c its all you have to hang your hats on over the Tigers.

The Vols will never come close to having the national reputation or national success in the NCAAs that Memphis has. That drives you hillbillies insane b/c its true.

When are you going to understand that nobody cares about 3rd place finishes? Here you are once again beating your chest over your 3 final four appearances(two of which were vacated and therefore no longer exist, and two of which took place 20-40 years ago).

It's a wash in the national success department, Tennessee is just as relevant as Memphis is and just as attractive a program. No argument though, Memphis has been more successful than Tennessee in the NCAA tournament. Yes, you guys finished in 2nd place 38 years ago and it eats me up inside but I think we'll manage. Hopefully one day you'll figure out that nobody remembers/cares who finished in 2nd/or 5th for that matter. It's all about championships, and neither of us have one in basketball.

The hillbilly comment was disappointing, try harder please. Please keep posting though, your posts grow more and more entertaining/pathetic/adorable and I'm sure everyone's enjoying an inside look at a Memphis fan's inferiority complex.

It's the offseason I guess? I've also been disappointed by most of the pro-UT replies in here as I'm not really sure if they're trolling or not.

I agree though. The Tennessee-Memphis series has some potential for a rivalry, but it definitely lost a good bit of its luster with the departure of Calipari. I'd put the matchup on the second tier after Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Florida.

I think it is too early to tell about Pastner and definitely too early to tell about Martin. Martin does have the advantage of being a head coach before.

It's a wash in the national success department, Tennessee is just as relevant as Memphis is and just as attractive a program. No argument though, Memphis has been more successful than Tennessee in the NCAA tournament. Yes, you guys finished in 2nd place 38 years ago and it eats me up inside but I think we'll manage. Can't we all just get along? I'd love to see a Final Four with all TN teams. I'd love for UT to come to Memphis and get some recruits, not just go for the BIG recruits, there's a lot of talent.

What does changing the name of the school have to do with anything? I guess I could ask you why UT changed the name from Blount College to East Tennessee College to East Tennessee University to the University of Tennessee. Newsflash! Most universities have changed their names through the years. But I'm sure you already knew that. :crazy:
