Memphis Sports Radio

Yeah, that's why CBS pays a billion dollars for the NCAA Basketball tournament. I love it when the college football sycophants try to bootstrap the NFL's popularity to boost the image of their game. In most of the major media centers on the East Coast, nobody cares about colleg football. The same is generally true of the West, as well. However, everyone follows March Madness.

Sure, there is money - just not for the schools. Most NCAA basketball programs (over 60%) operate at a financial loss - including Memphis most years.

That's a bad stat for you, because every study ever done on the matter shows football is a loss leader at 4 out of every 5 schools. There's a reason ETSU dropped football.

Why? Because I bring facts to the table? The best argument the Title IX crowd always has when football coaches bemoan scholarship cuts is that almost all of their programs are already losing money. I don't deal in fantasy and how I'd like things to be, as many of you do. I simply deal with empirical fact.

You deal in 'facts' but have nothing to back them up. Especially when you use phrases such as "every study ever."

Not to mention you still think Memphis doesn't wish they had our football history.

you also think they aren't jealous of the fact that we are in a BCS conference.

And in those thoughts you are dealing in fantasy.

I'll stick with the original point. The University of Memphis would trade their basketball heritage for UT's football pedigree.

Jus because I'm well read doesn't mean I'm going to do your research for you. Google NCAA Football and profitability(or some synonym). You'll get a plethora of studies. To counter your claim that I'm making the numbers up, if you can find one comprehensive study that shows as much as 40% of football playing schools in the NCAA make money off their programs, I'll give you $100.

I don't want your money. I never said you were making it up, either. In fact I know you are correct in this instance. The majority of football programs (especially the ones outside of BCS conferences) do not profit from the football programs.

I just found the language you used, without anything to back it up, interesting.

I bet you also think Kentucky would trade their basketball history for Alabama's football tradition and Kansas would do the same with Oklahoma. I'm sure North Carolina fans lie in bed at night wishing they could be Clemson.

If you don't see the difference between the basketball programs of UNC, Kansas, Kentucky versus the basketball program and history of UMemphis then you are completely ridiculous.

So, if I'm making a point that is common knowledge among people that follow college sports closely, yourself included, I should go dig up links to a bunch of musty academic studies to prove something everyone already knows? In the law, we have a concept called judicial notice. It allows the court to accept widely accepted facts without evidence. For example, I would not have to produce a calender as an exhibit if I were stating that Wednesday comes after Tuesday. Among people with even rudimentary knowledge of the economics of college athletics, everyone knows the vast majority of football programs produce red ink. Anyone who doesn't already know that isn't someone I'm concerned about educating to that fact.

Not the point. IE thinks everyone would trade basketball success for football glory.

We have this concept among humans called common sense. It allows people to discuss a topic then call bs when one party completely misrepresents the prior discussion.

Show me where I said "everyone would trade basketball success for football success" and I'll give you $100.

I was specifically pointing out that Memphis would immediately trade their Basketball heritage for the Football heritage of UT - in a nonosecond to be specific.
