Memphis Sports Radio

Memphis as a whole is a hellhole compared to Knoxville. I lived there for 22 years of my life and I will NEVER live there again. The last place I worked was on Main street, downtown and I had to be at work at 6am every morning. Let me tell you that walking around downtown Memphis on a dark, cold January morning is not a safe feeling. The town is run by a gang banging mayor and his band of drug pimps. The worst part is the people of Memphis know this and still re-elected him for the hundreth time(sarcasm). It is the crime capitol of the US because of this. Now, I also lived in Knoxville for 7 years and it too has its bad areas, but they are cake compared to Memphis. Now I live in Alabama or true hell, lol. Actually its not that bad because the ocean is only 10 minutes away. But, for work, I had to decide about a month ago where I wanted to move to, AGAIN and guess what my two choices were, Memphis or Knoxville. Let just say that my decision was easy and I'll be at a lot more UT games.

Well that pretty much sums it up.....& I do think that is why so many University of Memphis fans truly hate UT....they know it's a hellhole.....:peace2:

Does anyone have recommendations on good Memphis sports talk shows on radio that devote some time to the Vols?

I've been so addicted to Sirius satellite radio I rarely turn on the local stations anymore and have no idea who carries what.

Thanks in advance.

Back to the original thread, please. I lived in Memphis a number of years ago and there was this newspaper sports guy named George Lapidus who had an evening radio sports show. He was fair and talked about whatever callers wanted to talk about including UT. Is he still there or is he retired or dead?

Please give me a break. Memphis fans hate UT because they have one win in the history of the series, that's it. Besides, I haven't heard a whole helluva lot of love coming from us Vol fans for the Tigers. Can you say pot calling the kettle black?

The Grizz drew OK when they were winning.

They drew numbers but have consistently had a problem selling out the lower bowl. Too much $$$ for most of the local folks. The one's that do purchase the higher dollar seats act like they're at the Masters. Shhhhh. However, I'll continue to buy my seats and go. I had high hopes for this year seeing an improvement but the jury is still out on that. Guess I'm a sucker for punishment.

I too have some optimism for the Griz this year. They have a lot of young and talented players, a new motivated coach who came from Phoenix and a lot of enthusiasm on the bench. As far as the so called fans in the stands I agree with your assesment of their attitude. Had a similar experience with the "elite fan" at a game last year. I was yelling my butt off and had a couple right in front of me, dressed to the nines with a laid back approach to the game. After about the third time the wife turned around and gave me a "you are ruining our night with your cheering" look I had to tell her "lady, if fans making a lot of noise for the team are upsetting your tranquility maybe you should stay home and watch it on tv for the next game"...

I've had very similar experiences there. Sadly on more than one occassion. I understand totally. The people who have seats around me have grown somewhat accustomed to it. Good thing, it's a basketball game, I'm standing and cheering a lot. I take my son's, it's not druken behavior-but showing support, etc. I try to use teach them what's ok and what's not. I'm not raising Georgia or Florida fans. I've even been asked to ask my 9year old to "not be standing so much". I'll get on my soapbox about this quick. :banghead2:

Are you insinuating that the reason I was cheering loudly was because I was intoxicated? :realmad: Just kidding..

I told this story in another thread a few weeks ago but I think it bears repeating. I had a boss here in Memphis about 20 years ago. He played basketball for U.M. and had an NIT ring. He hated everything to do with U.T. I used to try to pull for the Tigers (when they weren't playing U.T.) but was always bothered by how rarely they reciprocated. Then one day this boss said he would laugh if the U.T. team plane crashed. That was about 20 years ago, and I stopped trying to like the Tigers on that day.
Yep....I'll bet some form of this experience can be quoted by anyone that has lived in the mud city as a UT fan.

1. You don't know who I support but thanks for picking my teams for me. As a matter of fact, I do support U of M, my cousin went to grad school there, it's a southern school, it's in my home state so I guess that's solved.

2. It is my opinion this has been going on long before they beat us in that "sun shines on a dogs ***" day so long ago so I guess that's solved.

3. I really do think much of it is jealousy of our big state school, superior facilities, better recognition, and the fact they live in a craphole doesn't help the resentment any.....

Good luck to the Tigers this year.....wish them well in their conference:search:

I'm confused as to how I picked your teams for you. You can support whoever you like as far as I'm concerned. Memphis fans have been jealous of losing so much to Tennessee for a long long time so I don't get the reference you made that it only started in '96. It's been a big brother, little brother for years. Anyway, guess I'm just not smart enough to understand what the hell you're talking about.

Memphis fans have a special hatred for Tennessee. My whole life I've heard from them "I'm for Memphis and whoever Tennessee plays. *#$& Tennessee."

Heck, we were still hearing "but we beat Tennessee in 96" a couple of years ago.

Their hatred for Tennessee is even stronger now since they can no longer claim basketball dominance.

I still hear it. To this day.

I'm saying I don't have anything against U of M & I cheer for them most of the time. So I'm not calling the kettle black. I too still hear crap when the discussion turns to "we beat Peyton" day. I think we're saying the same thing here......it's an in state big brother thing but I'll support lil' bro when they're playing.....

You said they hate UT because they have one win....you said that & I didn't agree. I think many of them hate us....they hate us because they are the backseat university and because they are based in crapville.....not because of the one win.....get it???:good!:

Actually, I meant they hate us because of the 19 losses, or whatever it is now, not because of the one win. Get it??? Does it make sense to hate somebody because you won?

then that makes sense....it's a shame because they represent TN as well & I like to see them win....
Well, that's exactly the way I feel. But the average, dyed in the wool Tiger fan despises the Volunteers and I was giving my opinion why that is. I used to see people around town that had a bumper sticker on their car with the score of the '96 game. When I had a chance I would ask them why they were so proud of that game when the overall record was so one sided. Never got a reasonable answer, sometimes no answer at all.

Its hard for me to say much bad about Tiger High since they do play us home and home in most every sport except men's basketball..and they did that before Cal got the job there. But if they want to ever get back to being a semi-decent football team they need a complete overhaul of their coaching staff. No reason with the recruiting base there for them not to be better. No way we should have come back from 31-6 down at the half to beat them.

Yeah. And they hate y'all too.... :eek:lol:

Yeah they do but its more of a nice, competitive hate....probably not the same level they have with the Vols....sorta the same thing with us and UA.

You're probably right except at least Tennessee will play Memphis..

Yeah, I'm sure Memphis is really jealous of our basketball history. How many times have we reached as much as the Elite Eight? That's right. Two fewer times than Memphis has in the last two seasons. You wonder why Memphis hates UT? Being delusional enough to think our basketball history hangs with what they've accomplished is Exhibit 1.

They would trade their basketball history in less than a nanosecond for our football history. On the athletic landscape basketball is about 1/100th as big as football.
