Michael Sam, Missouri DE, Is Gay

This whole thing is called "attention whoring". It's 2014..no one cares (or should) if someone is gay. If anything it comes off as an attempt to increase draft stock or prepare scapegoat after failure.

I heard on 104.5 this morning that he was projected middle rounds however several GM's thought he wouldn't be drafted at all. I did not hear if this was before or after he came out.

It seems the media is really pushing for this guy to be drafted. Whatever happened to that basketball player who said he was gay and was a free agent?

Bigot - A person who hates or refuses to accept members of a particular group. Whether you like it or not you Sir are indeed a bigot. I have a couple of gay friends but don't like their lifestyle so I'm not a bigot. Puh-leesh. Change gay to black and I'd wager you'd call that a bigoted comment.

My hate is directed at the sin, not the sinner. I have no bad feelings for the person. I wouldn't treat them any different from a straight person.

The most asinine post yet. Then why the nearly 2000 year wait till slavery was abolished? Appeals? There's altruistic reasons we should be kind to one another. To claim our morality comes solely from the bible is completely ignorant.

Nothing more ridiculous than taking morality lessons from a book written (thru redactors mind you) over 2000 years ago. Every 100 years or so a society determines new ethics (slavery, women's rights, minority rights, gender rights). Sorry but the bible did not get it right the first time.

So you're saying the biblical ethics written haven't fallen in line with today's society?

This book, over 2000 years old said "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Much earlier than any "democracy" declared it so.

As if the media can control NFL GMs and owners.

We're talking about the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Barring disaster at the combine he will get drafted.

Oh I have no doubt the kid will get drafted. Its like that basketball player who said he was gay. The story gets hyped up so much there is almost no choice but for someone to pick the person up out of fear for what the media might label him/her as. Then sadly it also becomes a bit of a circus sideshow. The kid was going to play because he is talented. Being gay had/has nothing to do with how he plays football.

Now in the locker room I don't know..I've seen some things in football locker rooms that...well..makes this story a non story.

If you think an NFL franchise worries about how the media will react to a projected mid-round draft selection, we should go ahead and agree to disagree.

I do think there was some strategy on the part of Sam and his camp, in that they can gauge the reactions of teams and their players to see which teams might not be a good fit. And Sam controlled the message, putting the media in reaction mode instead of the reverse.

But I don't think any NFL team will be pressured into drafting Sam for fear of media repercussions...couldn't disagree more.

I doubt an NFL franchise cares about a mid round pick. However it could become sensationalized and become a nuisance if anything. I can see it now though, when he is drafted, some reporter questioning why so and so didn't take him earlier. Then you get the inevitable "was he drafted so late because he was gay?" MSNBC conversation where people who don't know anything about sports will think it was because he was gay, etc.

Obviously the media didn't do its part from your perspective.

Yes, yes it is.

Maybe by the fringe media elements. Anyone who follows the draft knew before hand there were already questions about his potential at the next level. Being gay isn't going to be the reason for him slipping on draft day.

No it isn't.

Don't think that this wasn't something that was factored into Sam's decision.

He told his teammates months ago, which means this was already known in NFL circles. If he remains in the closet, he could drop in the draft and it'd be chalked up to "poor measurables at the combine." I'd argue that, by coming out before the draft, he's protected his draft status. Whether you believe it or not, this puts a significant amount of pressure on the NFL.

I don't want to detract from the courage and feel-good aspect, but this also feels like a shrewd and calculated business decision. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The NFL is a multimillion dollar business, they are not going to "listen" to any outside pressure to draft a prospect due to him being gay. The coaches and front office guys are not going to risk their jobs to make a segment of the population happy.

Bzactly.

The media will definitely bring up his sexual orientation if he's drafted in the later rounds or not at all, that you can guarantee. It won't be by any fringe media either, if he was to go undrafted you can bet it will be big news on MSNBC and CNN.

MSNBC and Fox News are both fringe media outlets.

They exist to cancel each other out.

Multimillion? Try multibillion. And it has an image to consider. There's a 0% chance that Sam goes undrafted. And I'd be floored if he slips beyond the 5th round.

If he goes undrafted then it is because front offices don't think his play will translate well. Anyone with any sort of intelligence will understand and not think it was because he is gay.
