Michael White (La Tech)

lol, well that's fair. If I were his dad at Duke and he called me for some advice, I wonder if I'd think this is the right place at the right time.

As a Vol fan, the attitude is of course he will come, we'll double his salary, but that's not all there is to it...

Just messin with ya. I agree.

I don't think it would ever be allowed to look like he passed, it just doesn't work that way.

When I put everything to the side, everything we've just been through with a young coach, everything I know about the fan's expectations, the way the roster looks, having to be a guy with 3 years of experience and going up against Calipari, Donovan, Pearl, Stallings etc...I can see him taking the job.

The problem is, I can't put all that aside, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn't put all of that aside.

Ok....I see where you are coming from. I guess it may be Monday before we learn more. I really like what I see as a big upside in White. Time will tell....but man we Vol fans need a break and for something good to happen. Goodnight Volnation.

La Tech has only averaged 14 wins per year in 19 seasons before White. Impressive what he has done.

I still think it's a shady process by anyone who does it. It's generally done to get a specific player that coach is close to. It just seems like dealing with handlers.

It's starts to get into a gray area of, are the aau coaches doing what's best for their okayer or trying to get the best new gig?

And being a ga and an assistant at mercer isn't qualifications enough to be a highly paid assistant at a program like UCLA. That's like saying I worked a rack room shoes for a year then nike hired me as a designer.

I said partially qualified. A lot off AAU coaches roll a ball out and let them play, that's now mine was, he wasn't affiliated with our HS team or basketball in general outside of our team.

It's not, but realistically we were never going to get a big name.

Tennessee has the money to get a big name coach but our athletic department are a bunch of cheap skates who tries to pay as little as possible for a basketball coach.

Did anyone else feel like the "Howland" rumors quickly needed to be squashed if true? Within minutes, people speculated that White was going to get hired.

Feels like a meh hire to me. At least when CCM was hired, he was from the Gene Keady coaching tree. And he played in the NBA, there was something to get excited about. Even though the excitement quickly fizzled. Sure, White went 29-8 this past season, but only Tulsa from conference USA made the NCAA tournament. I guess we'll have to hold out hope that he lives up to the hype of being a great recruiter.

I can live with White, still a bit unknown, but better than Pitino Jr at this point. I'd prefer Mack or Tyndall. Simply better resume's because they've coached longer and have more experience.

La Tech put up amazing numbers this year. 15th in the country in scoring and rebounding. I think they were top 15 in assists too. White's two biggest OOC wins are his NIT win over Florida State last year and over Georgia this year.

On this Easter Sunday, Tennessee's search for a new basketball coach is ongoing. As we reported in our Wednesday update, Louisiana Tech head coach Michael White was a guy that Tennessee's search party of Jon Gilbert and Dave Hart reached out to early after Cuonzo Martin's depature on Tuesday.

Sources confirmed to Volquest that Tennessee had discussions with White on Thursday and the two sides had further discussions throughout the evening on Saturday. Where or how the talks took place on Thursday is unknown. We know Hart
was in town on Thursday, at least through the daytime hours. We also know that a UT plane and a private business/donor plane were out for several hours Thursday, meaning Tennessee potentially could have sent multiple persons out to speak with potential candidates --- and almost certainly one of those trips being White.
...
One other note, there was some Saturday Twitter talk about Tennessee and Ben Howland, from the sources we spoke with as of late afternoon Saturday there had not been any contact of any kind with Tennessee and Howland.

I think White (and his ENTIRE family) will play hardball w/ Hart and TN when making a final contract.

According to his bio from LA-Tech

- he has business degree
- his wife has a law degree
- his dad is the current AD for DUKE. He was also an AD for Notre Dame, Arizona St. and smaller colleges
- 1 brother is currently the AD for Buffalo
- his other brother is an assistant AD for LA-Tech.

I'm good with White. He's a much better coach than Martin was and I'm more convinced by his recruiting abilities at Ole Miss that he can do the same, and easier, at UT. He also built that LA Tech from scratch and is a future star, in my opinion. We passed on Bill Self and Gregg Marshall, so I hope we don't miss out on another great up and comer. Martin never had the pedigree.

Why do I keep reading posts about White's great " recruiting abilities"? How many 4 and 5 stars has he signed?

Coaches La Tech.
well known father at a successful program.
Made the postseason although not at a very high level.
sounds so familiar.

Butch Jones had only signed one four star ever before UT.... Sometimes it has a little bit to do with facilities and location

^^^ ding ding ding. See my post above. Recruiting to UT might be slightly different than LA Tech. What had Martin ever done in recruiting at Mizzou St. and he landed two 5* at UT.

Irrelevant. Calipari couldn't recruit 4 and 5* to the dump that is Ruston, LA.

How about when he was an assistant at Ole Miss? I think it's a fair question if one of his selling points is what a great recruiter he supposedly is.

Good question. I'm not an Ole Miss BB recruiting expert, but I believe he was the lead recruiter most of the time he was in Oxford and must have done fairly well to stay there for 7 years.

I understand. My post was based on the comments that stated White is a "great" recruiter and I was wondering what that is based on.
