Michael White (La Tech)

Why do I keep reading posts about White's great " recruiting abilities"? How many 4 and 5 stars has he signed?

Dunno. Ol Miss website had this to say about him - "A key figure in the recruiting arena, White has helped Ole Miss haul in some of the best signing classes in program history during his tenure. The incoming class in his first season back was ranked as high as third in college basketball by recruiting publications, while two recent classes have both been rated top 25 in the country." He is apparently highly regarded as a recruiter in the industry. Link

His dad is athletic driector at Duke. He is in training for Krzyzewski's job. UT would be the scapegoat!

Complete nonsense.

If Duke hires him away 5 years from now then he's done a pretty good job at UT.

Would you prefer we hire a coach nobody wants?

yeah we can only hire coaches that never went to school any where else.....i have never seen a fan base so afraid of losing a coach they dont even have yet.

I'm more concerned about his contract/buyout, etc... His family is full of AD's. His own brother is an assistant AD at LA-Tech! (package deal?)

Again, playing Devils advocate, how many NCAA tourney wins did those great recruiting classes have at Ole Miss?

So if true they have been in contact since Thursday, and possibly multiple times, could it be a situation where mizzou is indeed liking the idea of White there as well?

Relax Leb...they can't exactly hire him and Marshall both...can they? :)

Which one speaks more about recruiting abilities:

The one who brings in guys that other people have labeled "great"--but who may or may not be coachable, fit the system, play team ball, go to class, etc.

or...

The one who identifies and selects specific 3-stars that he can develop into a team of post-season giant killers?

If it's the former, then a "great recruiter" is just a great used car salesman. If it's the latter, given the added draw of UT's facilities, fanbase, etc. he should be able to recruit the same kind of players--just taller, longer, or better developed enough that others will label some of them 4-star.

But regardless, he will know what he's recruited and where he will use them. Myself, I'd rather start anew with the latter. More interesting and more fun to watch develop through the course of the regular season (which otherwise seems to count less and less).

This is a stumper for me too. If a top 5 program wants to hire our coach in a few years to replace a legend, then our program will be sitting pretty. But, wouldn't the fact that his dad is the AD be enough reason to suspect Duke will not hire him?

When Andy Kennedy/Rod Barnes are the head coaches during your time there, you could be giving recruits new Porsches and they wouldn't be winning big games

Feels like a meh hire to me. At least when CCM was hired, he was from the Gene Keady coaching tree. And he played in the NBA, there was something to get excited about. Even though the excitement quickly fizzled. Sure, White went 29-8 this past season, but only Tulsa from conference USA made the NCAA tournament. I guess we'll have to hold out hope that he lives up to the hype of being a great recruiter.
If you had watched any of White's fast paced games last year you would understand why some are excited. I've wanted White all along because I knew Marshall and Skaka weren't coming. His up tempo style of play has me excited.

I would be very excited if he is our coach. He is a star right now and an even bigger star in the future. He would do great things at Tennessee hope he is our coach.

LSU fan friend saw this on tigerdroppings last night and sent it my way

I go to Tech. I (and the entire fan base) will be crying ourselves to sleep if he leaves, which should tell you all you need to about how good of a coach he is. Our attendance has gone up, we’ve gotten drastically better every year, etc blah blah. I’m hoping this is all smoke. I think he’s an Ole Miss alum, which is who everyone was actually worried about him leaving for in a few years. This just sucks.

Here's another thing to consider. At La-Tech, there isn't much pressure with the fan base/media or probably at the school to really succeed.

Imagine you traveled in a van, but you did some things to make it "pimp". After awhile, yeah you want to move up.

Do you go for an RV where you can settle in and enjoy life on the road a bit? You'll stand out more, but you'll still have your privacy. You'll get the handle on a much bigger vehicle.

Or do you go for the major bus? And the free hotel lodging? But with eyes whenever you have to change a tire?

Jumping to a van to a major bus is a huge learning curve. I personally don't have time to go on a bus ride if we get a bunch of flat tires down the line.

Reading through this thread I understand that White had some good recruiting classes at Ole Miss when he was in charge of recruiting. The teams maybe didn't make the dance, but then again, he was only an assistant coach. Is he responsible for how the team performed, or does that fall on the head coach?

Why would some worried fan post that on a LSU forum.

Wouldn't a TN forum or Missou forum make sense.

Just think that's a little odd.

You find me a LA Tech forum active on the level of tigerdroppings and I'll give you a nickel. It's like a more fan-diverse VN.
