Question for all the "Fire Fulmerites":
Let's say for the sake of debate that UT loses 5, 6 games this season, Hamilton feels some heat from boosters and pulls the trigger on Fulmer. All Fulmer haters rejoice and the "hire this guy" debates begin with much passion and zeal. And coach Whoever arrives on campus with much anticipation and parade. Half of us are thrilled with the new regime and are excited about the upcoming season, half complain we didn't hire the other guy. Either way success under a new regime does not normally come early. Most likely Coach X will not be ideal for the players he has. His scheme may not fit well with our athletes, his style may make some leave the program. We may (and probably will) regress before we improve. It may take 3-4 years to get back to where everybody thinks we should be. The next coach may very well be a sacrificial lamb on the way to the guy that gets us winning SEC titles and contending for and winning BCS titles down the road. Can Fulmer do that? Maybe, maybe not. I don't have a crystal ball or I would hit the powerball every week. My point is this: New coach means losing early. It's normally the way it works. Or have a good season or two then struggle as the recruiting classes turn over. There is no magic potion nor is there a magical coach out there. This may sound like I am defending Fulmer, not the case. I want UT to win conference championships and BCS championships. I LOVED 1998. But it had been what....40 something years since the last one? In the late 90's we had an unusually talented group of players come through this program. A level we may not see again. And yeah, we should have won another big glass football sometime between 95 and 02, but we didn't. Has the game passed Fulmer by? Dunno. Folks said that about Paterno too and he made some HUGE changes and got his program back up there. We need to be planning for the future while trying to live in the present. And be realistic about expectations. There are some people who post on here that wouldn't be satisfied with winning every game 42-0. "We could have scored 70". We have become accustomed to success and are intolerant of what we view as failure. And we shouldn't be tolerant of failure, but we should celebrate the success more than we criticize the failures. I love the Vols. I support my team. I support the players and coaches. That doesn't stop me from second guessing any of them. Do we need an overhaul? Probably. Probably need to clean house completely and put away all the relics of the past. But be prepared for it to be a long process.
If he goes 8-4, with a bowl win (making it 9-4), he will still be here.
If he goes 8-4, with an awful bowl loss, then it's up to debate.
If he goes 8-4, and any of those losses come against either Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Alabama. Then the poo might hit the fan. That goes with saying if we 8-4 and lose to one of those teams then we beat either Georgia, Arkansas, or Florida.
God, I'm really confused. What I'm really trying to get at is the seat will be hot as hell if he loses to a team he shouldn't.
We lost to Cal and they're calling for his head. I mean I was pretty much Anti-Fulmer after the Penn State game but the lack of urgency in the Cal game pushed me across that line.
