Michigan vacancy could force Hamilton to act sooner

FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE FOOTBALL - Spurrier: 'Maybe I overstated our team'

"We've got to keep making changes, the way I look at it," he said. "If players can't get it done, you try the next guy. Then you may come back to that guy. But you keep changing until you find some guys that really want to play well and can play well."

This coming from a man that talked about his team being an SECE contender. I guess he's sending the wrong message to his team as well.

TVA you did not answer the question.

When a QB is playing well, why replace him? Demoralize the whole team by taking out the leader on offense? That makes sense.

If we are to believe the All Mighty and All Knowing David Cutcliffe, Ainge was injured (no surprise there) in the final minutes of that game and directly hurt our chances of making a comeback because he couldn't throw the ball downfield (I'll get to that story in a minute). If he isn't healthy enough to get it downfield and is checking off a play at the line (allegedly said by Cut), then he is not helping the team and somebody needs to replace him.

As far as Cutcliffe staing that Ainge's injury prevented him from throwing down field because he had reinjured his pinky in the 4th quarter, I have to ask the All Knowing Cutcliffe why he didn't have more shots downfield in the previous 45 minutes? Frankly, I think that was a cop out by Cutcliffe and really, if you think about it, he actually threw Ainge under the bus more than any of you could claim that I ever have. He basically blamed Ainge for the end of the game decision making, something that not even I, the biggest Ainge critic on the planet, was able to do after Saturday night.

Now you think about that justingroves...

Did you watch the game, TVA? Cal played their safeties back all evening and we don't have a ready deep threat on the roster to stretch the field in double coverage. Kenny O'Neil, our supposed best potential deep threat, looked totally lost. Cut took what the D gave him, with a brain fart on that goal line stand.

Apples to oranges. You talk of replacing Ainge as the season winds down because of 2 more losses. I said that is idiotic (which it is). Now you change your tune to the 4th quarter of the Cal game.

Stay on course and you'll look better.

In both instances, I detailed clearly why a replacement would be warranted.

In the 4th quarter, if he can't get the job done... find a replacement that can.

If we are struggling and reduced to scoreboard watching in mid-October where we have no control of our destiny and would need 3 SEC losses from UGA and UF to even consider sniffing ATL, then you need to find a spark and try to mix things up and find people that can get you over the hump. If they are seniors and aren't producing, replace them. If you have guys that have done their work in practice and deserve a shot to get reps for next season, then have at it.

If Fulmer would not play so conservative and we actually blow out teams like Air Force and Vanderbilt, then Crompton/Coleman would get their garbage time minutes and it would be a moot point. Heck, if Fulmer is going to just punt the ball on the last possesion and concede defeat anyways by punting, then you may as well consider that "garbage time:" and put in a new guy and see what they can do.

What has he done recently to deserve a lifetime coaching guarantee? We are the FSU and Michigan of the SEC right now...
wrong. Mich and FSU have been to BCS bowls and won conf. championships since we have.

When...not if, but when UT hires a new coach.....

(whenever that may be)

Personally, I would stay away from the Cowhers and Grudens, and go after a rising star at a smaller school, or a young sh*t-hot NFL or college coordinator.

Find a coach with a great track record, and a strong resume', and let him write his history at UT. Preferably one who has decided that the college game is where he belongs.

Another Urban Meyer, if there's one out there.

There is.

We've just gotta find him.

go vols.

And for what it's worth, I think a 7-5 record would see Phil move into an Assistant AD job.....

...preferably miles away from the football program.

Fulmer will be here forever....

and we will lose 3.5 games every year

Maybe.

But...Mike Hamilton has shown (men's basketball and baseball) that he ain't afraid to make a move. Granted, taking on Fulmer is a lot bigger deal, but still, Hamilton has shown a willingness to make a change when change is due.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the clock is ticking.

It's worth noting that Hamilton has shown a fondness for coaches with some "fire in their eyes".

That bodes well for the next head football coach at UT.

go vols.

He got cold blooded ganster on Delmonico after 18 years (I think).

The job title of Athletic Director might as well be changed to CEO of Athletics. That's what it is. You get the coaches that get you the wins and you get the money. Anyone seen utsports.com lately, they'd sell you some fishing bait if it was orange.

Seriously the first time Hamilton will think about getting rid of Fulmer is when those fiscal year reports come in and he sees for a fact that the University is not making as much money.

When Bill Battle was under the gun, the wail and cry was to bring Johnny home. Roll forward and it was put Johnny out to pasture and bring in Phil. The thing that gets me on this proposed coaching change is there is only the get rid of part of the equation and no consensus on a viable alternative.

To reiterate, I think you have the entire proposal. Some folks just spew fire Fulmer, fire Fulmer. For the idea to sell, it has to be something like Fire Fulmer, hire that wonderful coach in Boone. Only then will you get the money men to pay attention. We do not have a heir apparent.

Going into the start of 2004, Florida didn't have a clue who they would find to replace Ron Zook.

By the end of the season, candidates will emerge as they do every year.

The best way for Fulmer to leave is "by choice". If he finds he can't be successful... which a mediocre season this year might show him... it is possible. The possibility is enhanced if people close to the program help him see it.

It is very, very unlikely that CPF gets fired. The guy has lived UT football his whole life... it would be completely classless to make it ugly. Anyone who would take over a job like that wouldn't be the kind of guy UT will need.

OTOH, I still think he's made some good changes that should pay dividends. Unfortunately, they had a very stupid defensive gameplan against Cal.
Does this sound familiar?
Signed,
Johnny Majors

a lot of TN fans act like pre-1992 we were just DOMINATING. The fact of the matter is Fulmer made TN one of the best teams in the country. If 1998 would have never happened, Fulmer's job wouldn't even be in jeopardy. Think about Richt, everyone claims he's some kind of amazing coach and he has ZERO national championships. The worst thing that could ever happen to Mark Richt would be to win a national championship because from that moment forward he's "on the hot seat" until he wins another one.

I hate bandwagon UT fans. Bandwagon fans are 2 types of people:

1. People who know absolutely nothing about football and just look at numbers.

2. People who think they know a LOT about football, but don't have the intellect to wrap their minds around how an athletic department/football program operate.

Then there's a 3rd type of UT fan:

The type of fan that just wants to complain. The grass is always greener type fan. I hear people calling the radio every single day literally yelling about how much they hate so and so, and how much better this should be or that should be -- those people need a gut check because they're not fans. They're on the outside looking in. The rest of us are POSITIVE and supportive of the team.

For the last time, it's Kenny O'Neal. You'd think after 8 months people could at least learn the spelling of one's name.
