Michigan vacancy could force Hamilton to act sooner

In both instances, I detailed clearly why a replacement would be warranted.

In the 4th quarter, if he can't get the job done... find a replacement that can.

If we are struggling and reduced to scoreboard watching in mid-October where we have no control of our destiny and would need 3 SEC losses from UGA and UF to even consider sniffing ATL, then you need to find a spark and try to mix things up and find people that can get you over the hump. If they are seniors and aren't producing, replace them. If you have guys that have done their work in practice and deserve a shot to get reps for next season, then have at it.

If Fulmer would not play so conservative and we actually blow out teams like Air Force and Vanderbilt, then Crompton/Coleman would get their garbage time minutes and it would be a moot point. Heck, if Fulmer is going to just punt the ball on the last possesion and concede defeat anyways by punting, then you may as well consider that "garbage time:" and put in a new guy and see what they can do.

I cannot believe that in one post, you criticise CPF for consceeding the game by punting on 4th down, 2 minutes in the game, down by 14, deep in an opponents territory...YET, you say its ok to conceed the GAME by putting in backups in the hope they can produce something your starters cant. Either way you are conceding defeat...IN GAME ONE, with at least 11 games left to play.

WHat does pulling your starters do to their psyche?

Yeah...lets have another QB flip/flop...it did wonders in 2005.

Also, if 1998 was a "sweet experience" for you, just how did it get done "IN SPITE" of Fulmer??? I dont care how many Al Wilsons are on a team...they all respond to what the HEAD COACH says...else they see a lot of the bench.

Uhhh... in case you didn't know this, Cutcliffe is the one who said yesterday that Ainge was injured and didn't have the ability to throw the ball deep late in the game. Not me.

If Ainge couldn't perform to the best of his ability or good enough to give us a chance to win, then somebody else should have been in the game that could.

That isn't conceeding defeat. that's giving yourself a chance to win a big game early in the season with the best possible players available.

a lot of TN fans act like pre-1992 we were just DOMINATING. The fact of the matter is Fulmer made TN one of the best teams in the country. If 1998 would have never happened, Fulmer's job wouldn't even be in jeopardy. Think about Richt, everyone claims he's some kind of amazing coach and he has ZERO national championships. The worst thing that could ever happen to Mark Richt would be to win a national championship because from that moment forward he's "on the hot seat" until he wins another one.

Richt took a program that had never won the division and promptly won it three times in six years, including two SEC championships. Fulmer hasn't won the SEC in eight years. That's the difference. Both of them have won the SEC twice; it's just that Richt has won it twice in the last five years, and Fulmer has won it twice in 14 years, and none in the last eight. Thus the difference in how they're perceived.

If Fulmer had won the SEC championship games in 2001 and 2004, you wouldn't hear this talk about him, mythical national championship or not.

Listen its crazy to keep Fulmer. Fulmer has done nothing over the last 5 years, and he has had the tools to win the SEC over that span. When you make 2.1 million dollars then you better win. I just think the game has past him by and it is time for someone else to takeover. We havent won an SEC Championship in almost in 10 years, and that my friends is unacceptable.

Maybe.

But...Mike Hamilton has shown (men's basketball and baseball) that he ain't afraid to make a move. Granted, taking on Fulmer is a lot bigger deal, but still, Hamilton has shown a willingness to make a change when change is due.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the clock is ticking.

It's worth noting that Hamilton has shown a fondness for coaches with some "fire in their eyes".

That bodes well for the next head football coach at UT.

go vols.

I love CBP I think he is AWSOME! But how do you know he didn't just get lucky with CBP?

We are not going to lose the amount of games it will take to get a coaching change. Get over it and get a life.

I hate bandwagon UT fans. Bandwagon fans are 2 types of people:

1. People who know absolutely nothing about football and just look at numbers.

2. People who think they know a LOT about football, but don't have the intellect to wrap their minds around how an athletic department/football program operate.

Then there's a 3rd type of UT fan:

The type of fan that just wants to complain. The grass is always greener type fan. I hear people calling the radio every single day literally yelling about how much they hate so and so, and how much better this should be or that should be -- those people need a gut check because they're not fans. They're on the outside looking in. The rest of us are POSITIVE and supportive of the team.

well said:rock:

Question for all the "Fire Fulmerites":
Let's say for the sake of debate that UT loses 5, 6 games this season, Hamilton feels some heat from boosters and pulls the trigger on Fulmer. All Fulmer haters rejoice and the "hire this guy" debates begin with much passion and zeal. And coach Whoever arrives on campus with much anticipation and parade. Half of us are thrilled with the new regime and are excited about the upcoming season, half complain we didn't hire the other guy. Either way success under a new regime does not normally come early. Most likely Coach X will not be ideal for the players he has. His scheme may not fit well with our athletes, his style may make some leave the program. We may (and probably will) regress before we improve. It may take 3-4 years to get back to where everybody thinks we should be. The next coach may very well be a sacrificial lamb on the way to the guy that gets us winning SEC titles and contending for and winning BCS titles down the road. Can Fulmer do that? Maybe, maybe not. I don't have a crystal ball or I would hit the powerball every week. My point is this: New coach means losing early. It's normally the way it works. Or have a good season or two then struggle as the recruiting classes turn over. There is no magic potion nor is there a magical coach out there. This may sound like I am defending Fulmer, not the case. I want UT to win conference championships and BCS championships. I LOVED 1998. But it had been what....40 something years since the last one? In the late 90's we had an unusually talented group of players come through this program. A level we may not see again. And yeah, we should have won another big glass football sometime between 95 and 02, but we didn't. Has the game passed Fulmer by? Dunno. Folks said that about Paterno too and he made some HUGE changes and got his program back up there. We need to be planning for the future while trying to live in the present. And be realistic about expectations. There are some people who post on here that wouldn't be satisfied with winning every game 42-0. "We could have scored 70". We have become accustomed to success and are intolerant of what we view as failure. And we shouldn't be tolerant of failure, but we should celebrate the success more than we criticize the failures. I love the Vols. I support my team. I support the players and coaches. That doesn't stop me from second guessing any of them. Do we need an overhaul? Probably. Probably need to clean house completely and put away all the relics of the past. But be prepared for it to be a long process.

no i have no clue... but then again i dont try to act like i do... and atleast i know i do NOT

You don't try and act like you do? You start out by calling the person that created this thread an idiot. You have a problem with anyone that doesn't carry the same opinion as you so I would have to disagree. I don't hate Fulmer, never said that I did. Read my past 200 post and you will see that I have defended the guy myself. I think he is a great man on a personal level, just look at The Jason Foundation and his million dollar donation. If you did read my post you will see that I have crossed that line recently and I think UT needs some change. That's my opinion, you have yours so let it be. Not all of us on here are cupcake fans that turn a blind eye to everything we don't like. The point of Volnation is to discuss and debate not to call people idiots and be hypocritical about it. I know my opinions carry zero weight but I enjoy talking with other UT fans about something we all love. We can keep pretending that 'next year' will be the year and that 9-4 ain't that bad but I would like to see them strive for more. Sorry but I got a taste of it in '98 like the rest of you and I want them to get there again.

Les Miles has been mentioned for this job (UM) while he was at OSU.

Ill be surprised if Fulmer gets fired even after a losing season.

Loose Lips Les would be an even bigger idiot to walk out on the talent surrounding LSU right now to go to UM.

Did pretty well in 2004.

And if Ainge would have won the job outright, there would not have been a QB controversy in 2005. He couldn't beat out a linguini armed castaway from LSU.

Quaterback rotation in 2004?

We had 1 quarterback and 1 running back lining up behind center. No one should ever consider that a quarterback rotation. :eek:k:

05, who knew what any one was thinking, the result, 6 losses.

:good!:

Man, I hate thinking of rag arm.....................

Though I adore Ice Man.........

The other qb in '04 was Brent Shaffer.....rememeber

lot of ball to play

remember in 88 majors was 5-6

in 89 he lost 1 and won 11

Just aturday could be our won....BELIEVE!!

First Michigan will not fire Carr. That is not the Michigan way. Carr will be there until he wants to go. If he does have a bad season he may even be convinced to stay to salvage his legacy. Fulmer will not be fired. Face it and live with it. As much as anyone may want him to go it won't happen until he is ready to go. He wont lose enough to cause it to happen.

You may be right about Fulmer.

Carr is screwed.

Whether or not he could throw deep late in the game is a moot point. We didn't do it the rest of the game and scored 31. Pulling Ainge at that point of the game would have removed good game management. The proper action would have been NOT to all of a sudden change the play calling package that effectively put the other 31 on the board. We were having our way with them just as much as they were with us, and was in no need to throw deep in order to do so.

The fact Ainge couldn't throw the ball deep and Cutcliffe admitted it on the radio is a problem.

Its not rocket scientist, when Southern Miss gets word of this they are going to stack the line of scrimmage and take away UT's short passing game and the run.

What's the latest on Ainge?

Yeah that was good planning

national radio report to day cited no effects from Ainge's ailing finger...he is on his game and ready to go.....

they say nothing about the deep ball ability thought

This thread is nuts! C'mon, if you really beleive that Fulmer will lose his job this year then you are indeed certifiable. Even with a losing season Fulmer stays unless he decides to step down, which I seriously doubt because he has made a commitment to his players and recruits that he won't back down from. Don;t get me wrong, I am certainly not a Fulmer apologist, and I truly believe that this 'old school' style of football is moving us towards the middle and eventually the bottom half of the SEC but Fulmer does not get fired after this season, period. Like him or not he will win 8 or 9 games this year and be safe for a couple of more years. Barring another 5-6 season he may be around for 6-8 years which is what he said he would like to coach for.

Go Vols, beat So. Miss!
