Mickey Friggin Dearstone...

Not necessarily agreeing with the premise, but she is the longest tenured coach in Knoxville and her name is on the court. Having a good relationship between the two basketball coaches can only be a good thing.
Yeah, the open hatred Calhoun and Auriemma have for each other is killing UCONN.

I just meant in that her salary skyrocketted when he started getting raises and that was only to match what he was making w/out any other justifiable reason.

As for any other reason, no, they don't.

not true as she was making almost a million when he got here and crossed that line soon after. If anyone, she was kept in line with Geno

Couple of weeks ago, Dearstone was giving Jeff(?) grief about liking so many different teams. In listing teams he followed, Jeff mentioned something about the Hartford Whalers. The following ensued (as close to verbatim as I can recall):

Dearstone: the Whalers?! How do you like the Whalers?!
Jeff: I liked them since they were (insert NHL team that I cannot recall here).
Dearstone: See, I don't like that, either.
Jeff: What?
Dearstone: When a team moves but keeps its former nickname that has nothing to do with new city - because it doesn't apply anymore. Like the Jazz in Utah.
Jeff: But Hartford is on the Atlantic Ocean...
Dearstone (interrupting): That's my point, the former (Canadian) city is not on the Atlantic
Jeff: Actually they are.
Dearstone: Is it still the Atlantic Ocean up there (off the eastern coast of Canada)?
Jeff: Yes, it is.
Dearstone: Well, that still doesn't help your case because there aren't any whales in the Atlantic Ocean.
Jeff (and others) then goes on to correct Dearstone, only to immediately and profusely apologize for having done so.

Of course, Dearstone (and undoubtedly each of his employees who co-anchor the show) would deny that he was serious, as he does each time that he makes some ignorant comment and gets it handed to him on the air. But he was quite serious.

Croanin was very adament when he got bumped that Summit's salary would stay near Pearl's. No doubt she was racing to $1M against Geno, but don't discount how much Pearl's first bump from 800K to 1.3M played into it as well.

what justifies paying her way more than the income her sport makes

I don't believe that's true, but either way that's not the basis of how her salary should be judged. Instead, you should compare it to what her coaching peers make.

because her sport doesn't bring in enough money to justify it financially.

Her salary is comprised of mulitple streams - base, TV/Radio, Endorsements, and PR.

I would assume if you averaged all wm coaches Pat would be getting a paycut.

I still feel she deserves it with what she has accomplished and the type of program that she runs. If the men's team had a coach that had accomplished the same things with their team that she has with the women's I doubt you would be saying that. And besides, they seem to be doing pretty well financially from what I know.

so if your company brings in say $1,000,000 a year you should go pay the main person responsible $1,500,000 because of what another company pays their employers? no women's athletic department anywhere should make a decision to pay more than what they bring in.

I searched and can't find a quote on that when the contract was signed in 06. And if she really did that then she didn't get close.

That's a safe assumption, but in fairness she's not an average coach. Still, I suspect that UCONN is the only other school that would even consider paying over $1 million to lure a top coach away.

they bring in way more money than the women. the men's department is working on a $9,000,000 budget because of the money they bring in. they are paying for their own bills.

I'm searching too.

FWIW, Croanin was interviewed on Basillio (I know, I know) during that time frame. I have no idea if he archives his shows or not, but her inital stance was that she was going to match Pearl's raises.

Yes, reality set in, but that was Croanin's inital goal/plan/propaganda.

As a program they lose close to $2M a year.

Title IX.

She needs to take some of that money and hire Al Brown back! Her teams haven't been the same since his departure.

By this logic, how much should the top NCAA men's track and field coach earn?
