Mid July Class Prediction Thread

We need at least 3 LB this class and probably 4. The depth chart is scary at that position. In 2015 we will have:

JRM
Bates
Bryant
Jumper
Creamer
Bynum
King

We need Sapp, Cherry, Smith, and Atkinson in a desperate way for that year. We've only taken 2 true LBs in the past two classes, 4 if you count Jumper and Creamer.

With Cecil Cherry and Austin Smith that's 9 linebackers in 2015, not including Elliot Berry and Jakob Johnson. How many linebackers do we need? Aside from offensive line and cornerback, I say we add the best talent available (chiefly, Torrance Gibson) and sort out where to distribute our "athletes" (Dylan Jackson, Jacque Bruce, TG, Jauan Jennings, etc.) after the fact.

You know....not all of us on here are so enlightened that we know every detail of the simple science of recruiting numbers.

I made a guess. For whatever reason, I felt like a staff that pulled off 35 recruits when NOBODY saw how they could, could pull 4 more recruits than the full class amount, if they wanted to do it. If there were only 5 more spots, then why would we be at least 50 more prospects? Especially when we seem to have so many "locks."

Forgive me for being optimistic, Mr. Einstein. They'll take however many they take, but I'll bet you anything they take more than 25.
Avatar bet then? :) The reason we are in on so many prospects is because a) we have offered the most scholarships out of any SEC school, b) recruiting is fluid, c) Butch & staff never stop recruiting. Optimism is nice but it's also nice to air on the side of reality. :loco:

No, I just understand that Love is the perfect back for this system and is a better player then Reid.

I look at it like this and am probably wrong(as usual). :)

IF I am a coach and have Kamara and Reid as my RBs for 2015, and am looking at other options to take say over Reid(who I took a commitment from), why would I swap out a 6' 220LB RB for a kid who is 5'9 174? Obviously I took Reid as he filled a skillset which I needed on the team. Reid and Love are completely different RBs. Not sure how you come up with swapping one for the other makes any sense at all.

Maybe I'm wrong.

That's not the truth. Fact is Love is a better player and if we had the choice of one or the other I think Love is the clear choice. I fear another Alden Hill with Reid.

So why did CBJ take Reid's commitment so early if Love is clearly the better choice?

Let me guess, insurance? <--VN's new reasoning.

My guess would be to make sure we have a back up plan, insurance if you will, but do you think Reid is a better player just because Butch took is commitment already?

I think CBJ took his commitment so early because he liked what he saw and Reid filled a need for Tennessee's football team. CBJ felt Reid could play in the SEC. He fit CBJ's recruiting profile. Not sure why that would change today. I see Love more along the lines of Kamara's skillset, but Kamara has about 40LBS on him.

I think Love is one of those guys that Butch will save a spot for if he wants to come here. He won't turn away Rocky Reid. But with 3 running backs in a class, usually a recruit will see a log jam and will want to go where he can get playing time.

This is the age where running backs fill roles. Reid is a friggin' tank and in my mind he is better at what he does than Love would be. We need Reid more because of that. Labeling him a non factor before his senior season is ignorant. If Love wants to come to UT it will not be at Reid's expense.

RB is such an interesting position to recruit for. It seems like all RB's "specialize" in something. It's either that they are a shifty, speedy, elusive type, or they are a smash mouth, full-back, power type, or they are a great receiving threat. You rarely find one that is all three. Therefore, it's perfectly legit to have multiple backs in the same class.

That being said, RB's are a dime a dozen. If you use them right, you can have average backs, that do above average work. Personally, I think that Love is better than Reid. BUT...I think that Reid was available, and like someone said, fit the profile, and was willing to commit then and there. And I think with Kamara and Hurd, you've got your "stars" at the position, you're just looking for guys to fill the roles that maybe Kamara and Hurd can't. I think Scott, Paulk and Reid are those guys. And yes, the possibility is huge that they will become stars in their own right. Especially Scott. I think Scott does very good things here.

Looks about right except for Gibson and McGraw. IMO, Gibson is probably headed to Auburn and isn't McGraw committed elsewhere? Not saying we can't flip McGraw, just saying it may be a difficult task.

That being said, I hope we got both of them too.:)

Eh, these are fun. I see us taking more than 25 again. I see there being a lot of attrition this offseason. I think after two seasons, Butch will know who just isn't cutting it, and some guys will see it. So, I'm going to assume we take 29.

QB - Jennings, Dormady, Gibson
RB - Kamara, Reid
WR - Williams, Jefferson
TE - Oliver
OL - Richmond, Lovingood, Jones, Stewart, Jackson, Hall
DL - McKenzie, Picou, Butcher, Phillips, Tuttle, Clemmons, DJ Jones (3 DTs, 3 DEs)
LB - Austin Smith, Cecil Cherry, Sapp
DB - Ordway, Justin Martin, McGraw
ATH - Bruce
P - Townsend

I'm going to guess that Griffin and Woods aren't a part of this class. No real reason, just guesses. Like everything else on this board.

1. I don't think we will go over 25.

2. I don't see Tennessee taking Gibson when there are bigger needs than a 3rd QB (unless he decides to be a WR and Jefferson isn't a part of the class).

JMO. :hi:
