Mike Keith

Keith is good, I've heard him being mentioned among the best out there, but I don't like his voice. That's not a shot at him, I just like Kesling's voice and I like how he gets excited verses some others. He actually gets "excited" when the other team does well, unlike Gold who sounds liked he's p'd.
Can't stand Eli Gold, the guy from Auburn (he sounds like a high school announcer), neither the LSU or Florida guys (if they're still the same from a few years ago) but I haven't heard the others.

Well, let's face it, he's following John Ward. Anyone following Ward has a tough hill to climb and will be criticized rather harshly- fair or not.

Personally, I like him, but as someone else mentioned I think he 's much better at basketball and in fact really like listening to him and Bert calling a basketball game. Football not so much. I don't hate it, but it is rather annoying to hear him mess up and he has made many gaffes and blunders.

Perhaps, but I do like his voice, others sound retarded when they get excited at the game changing play.
Also, everytime I hear Ward's replays I wanna mute it. Sorry. :/

Kesling interviews well. I just hate "into the cheggerboards!"... Tim Priest is pretty good. But Mike Keith brought insight to the game as if he'd been with the team for years. Way better than last years PPV. Can't remember who that was but they had to have won a Pilot contest in order to call that game.

Kesling is an excellent interviewer/coach's show guy. He is a tv guy first and therefore struggles with football in getting the play from point A to point B because he forgets the radio listener is not seeing the game and he is to describe to the best of his ability what is going on so they feel like they are at the game. John Ward was the greatest. Keith was good last night. Bob is a good guy, but should stick to TV.

Couldnt care less if mike adds slightly more insight and by no means is he John Madden or something. His voice is annoying and he shows no excitement for UT football. He would be perfect for a chess match or a poker game though. He could commentate the hell out of that.

You ever consider that was because he was doing the television broadcast? He can't be as biased on TV as he can when he's on the Titans radio network.

Also it was Austin Peay. There wasn't much to be excited about. But if you listen to his very first "touchdown big orange" it had a lot of excitement and electricity to it. I think it just got tiring after the 3rd or 4th time in the first half.

With Kesling, you get "cheggerboards".

With Keith, you get "URRRRRRRNNNNNGGGGGHHHHHH" instead of "Orange". (which, coincidentally, is as annoying as trying to baptize a cat.)

Push, IMO.

When they played the video of Chuck Webb running for a long TD with John Ward counting down the yards, me and about 95,000 fans REALLY missed John Ward! :cray:

Keith screams way too much when doing Titans games. Can't stand it. Thought he was much calmer, more crisp doing the UT game.

I have to say I was very impressed with Mike Keith. I never pay much attention to him when he calls Titans games, but listening to his call of the Austin Peay game, I was impressed. He and Tim Priest would be a great duo.

Nevertheless, Kesling is a VFL, and though he lacks the uniqueness that good radio guys possess, I'm all for keeping him until he sees fit to step down. He didn't complain when Dale Jones blew cigar smoke in his face after the Vols' punched their ticket to the '86 Sugar Bowl, I won't complain about his occasionally-dry play calling.

I know exactly what youre talking about and no it didnt. It sounded like he had to force himself to sound excited. Kesling always sounds excited. The problem is that no one cares if the replacement is better, they just want someone different. Whether it be kesling, fulmer, bray, etc. Same crap, different day.

Well I don't really care if they are genuinely excited or having to fake enthusiasm. I want the one who does a better job regardless of where he went to college. And when comparing Kesling and Keith its Keith by a mile IMO. This "good ol' boys" mentality is what kept Fulmer here when he had lost his touch near the end. The difference is Kesling never had the touch to begin with.

Really enjoyed hearing Mike Keith reunited with Pat Ryan for this PPV ... brought back memories of the MCM and the first 5 years of Titans football in Nashville.

Keith is one of the very best in the business!

I've read Volnation for about a year now and decided now was the time to chime in.
My father is a close friend to Mike Keith and from what I know:

Keith was at UT for about a decade until the Titans moved to Nashville. After he was offered the Titans job MK asked John Ward if there was any way Kesling would NOT be his successor and the rest they say is history.

IMO the job was not about talent or passion, but rather due to the time Kesling spent on the job at UT, WIVK, and WBIR. Go Vols and Give Him Six.

I agree completely. Keith did an excellent job on the telecast of the Austin Peay game. However, his voice is fairly high-pitched and, when he gets excited, he sounds like a weasel squealing.

Like I said, kesling has a better voice for tv. I dont need someone to break down every play. I know how football works. John Ward didnt break down the plays. He just commentated.

Its all about wanting change, no matter if its for the better or not.

Kesling does well with basketball because it is always a running comentary. he can't deal with football because there are down spots that need to be "colored in". on a 75 yard run there needs to be build up. there needs to be a pause, a to the 5, to the 4, etc. John Ward was a master of the "pause". it created that sense of anticipation. Kesling seems to miss that. I know he doesn't want try to immitate Ward exactly im sure, but he needs to use the "pause".

No. No. No. Kesling is worse at basketball. It's not even a contest.

There is an awful lot of new and high-powered technology in today's world.

I wonder what it would take to develop a program that instantly converts Bob Kesling's voice into the voice of John Ward?

Then we'd need to come up with a way to change Kesling's phrases into something John Ward would actually say.
