Unfortunately the seemingly only consequence appears to be the team that spends the most money will have all the best talent. I don't buy that any player is staying for good. Any player is likely to leave for more money. The money aspect is just one part of the problem. There has to be some consequences to the portal bs.
The reputation as an air raid offense was always a lie.I don't like it , but I can see him leaving. We had a reputation as an air raid offense from 22 and somewhat through 23. Then we are a run based offense in 24? Why? We have the #1 QB from the recruiting cycle and we are running the ball? None of the receivers on the team looked good this year. Millions of dollars in the draft lost by those who will even go pro. Why don't the receivers look good? Is it the play calling? Is it the QB that he would have to likely work with over the next 2-3 years? Matthews got playing time. A lot of it. so that isn't the issue. He has likely evaluated his long term prospects here and doesn't like what he sees. Being on the inside, he likely has a good handle on the state of the team moving forward. That is the most concerning part.
We were never an air raid offense. In 2021, we had 376 pass attempts and 577 rush attempts. In 2022, we had 422 pass attempts and 523 rush attempts. Would probably look like it at this point regardless, as it seems the rest of the staff and players, and now general public, are aware of the WRs feelings about Pope. Agree, tough spot for Heupel. Unbridled portal activity and NIL on this scale…seems like the tail is now wagging the dog.If Matthews is/was wanting Pope gone, Heupel is in a tough spot. Losing the locker room is bad but losing the coaching offices is also bad.
Whether Pope needs to go or not, if that's the rub for Matthews and Heupel wants Matthews, he needs to find a way that Pope leaves without it looking like Matthews pushed him out.
the university has the papers. they have to file them. from there a 48 hour window occurs. he can choose to come back, within that window? there was also a porthole closing at 12 AM Sat Night. Yet here we are.So basically the player can drag this out as long as they like as long as they don't fill out the paperwork or the watch a video? Am I understanding AP correctly?
If so, this is the most God awful, ridiculous, stupid thing I've heard in a while.
CJH is not really in a tough spot. MM plays the easiest position on the field. He is not a Heisman contender. There are others just as good if not better. When Butch let the team push out the strength coach (I don't remember his name), that was the beginning of the end for Butch. He had lost control of the team. CJH cannot afford to allow the players to dictate his staff decisions. If MM doesn't like Pope, then he should gtfo, not the other way around. If Matthews is/was wanting Pope gone, Heupel is in a tough spot. As we'll never hear whether Matthews wanting Pope out is why he left, people will blame Heupel for "not getting a deal done" and "how can you let a guy like that walk."CJH is not really in a tough spot. The splash big plays led to this perception, but Josh has always ran a "run first" offense. Granted a little heavier on the run part this year, but that's what you do when you've got a dude like Dylan Sampson in the backfield. Let him cook.
His insta is the same as Sunday. He still has all his tennessee photos archived.Mike Matthews drops major hint he'll return to the Tennessee Vols in the end
Right now, everyone is on Mike Matthews watch. Over the weekend, hearts dropped everywhere when it was announced that the former 5-star Tennessee football signeallfortennessee.com

Take that for what it's worth. A good sign? Maybe .... but who knows what these kids want anymore?
