Mike Matthews to portal? [He’s staying]

These kids are going to **** where they eat. I’ve loved SEC football since I was 2 years old and I’ve found myself paying way more attention to MLB free agency/ NBA/ getting ready for Daytona…etc. I don’t mind players getting their share, but having to re-recruit players after one year and HS kids having agents is annoying. There’s no way that the masses are going to put time and money into this catastrophe unless there are some guard rails.

Don't worry, I heard he's going to be better than Squirrel (who is 7th in UT history in catches) and that we're just clearing out all the dead weight to surround Nico with a bunch of studs
Squirrel quietly had a great chance to break every UT receiving record entering this year. Then he couldn’t stay healthy, and Nico couldn’t hit him.

Welp he's gone.

I don't know how you can keep Pope after basically losing his entire room. He needs to go.
It probably isn’t popes fault that we don’t have the money to pay our players more than other schools are willing to. Just saying we lost backups that didn’t play and future starters that could earn more elsewhere

He should have played more this year for starters.

I agree. I think some of these kids get frustrated seeing the lack of output from their position’s starters this year while they sit on the sideline. Heupel is too loyal to the older players. If you’re sitting behind Tillman or Hyatt, I think you understand, otherwise a five star kid expects to play.

We lost basically every receiver from this year. I’d say Pope’s inability to develop a guy plays into that.

He probably also got pissed watching Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams do their thing while he sat on the bench and saw us go a month without scoring in the first half.

Agreed. Im not the coach, I never will be the coach, and outside of kid football and lacrosse I’ve never coached anything; but it would seem to me if what you have isn’t working why not give the other kids a chance?

I don't think that's all there is to the whole room getting cleaned out. I'm sure schools were offering him just as much money when he was a 5 star recruit.

This is now the norm in college football and most teams are experiencing the same thing. It’s called negotiating and “the leaking” is by his agent. I don’t think he is going anywhere except a car dealership.

Stubbornness and loyalty to assistant coaches have ruined many a coach

I mean I think that’s why Mike Matthews is out. He’s a starter next season regardless of if he stayed or goes. Seems to like pope and it seemed to be a contract $ issue rather than anything else.

Nimrod and Webb didn’t have the talent needed to compete. Nathan Leacock was very fundamentally raw despite being an amazing athlete and he was definitely improving but he mabye had a 50/50 shot at starting here and a >90% somewhere else

My big issue with the portal is that only a small number of players are ready to start year 1 or even year 2.

I don’t agree with forcing them to stay buried on a depth chart and never play. But at the same time historically development takes years not just a single season or even less than that. Especially at OL and sometimes at WR.

Deleted all his TN stuff. Man, wtf.

What an absolute L by this staff if true.
That seems more like a negotiation tactic they pull in the NFL than him all of a sudden wanting nothing to do with UT. It makes the fans worry and causes management to cave in. So it could all just be him looking to get a bigger payday.

But what fans may not realize is that this also may force the staff to commit to him as one of top receivers for playing time. Talk is cheap. But if the staff goes out and pays him it may not leave them any room to attract a big name in the portal, thus further securing him playing time.

I really want him to stay but honestly part of me wants them to tell these kids to not let the door hit them on the way out.

Hopefully Heupel has a backup plan and has put out feelers to Taesean Lyons or Burke.

Josh has lost this team. No way in hell the WR1 next year should want to leave. college football is done.
Maybe Nico has lost the team! WR's getting out to find somewhere where they can get catches. I posted before that the team quit against Ohio State because they had no faith in their QB Heupel obviously made it clear he was sticking with Nico and then all of the sudden we see QB's and Wide receivers heading out! Draw your own conclusions!
