Say what you will about Saban, but the guy was cutthroat and cared about winning. The best coaches have no issues trimming the fat regardless of personal relationships.

The fun part is every few years we hire a new coach and AD. Then we get to be very optimistic until the season starts with that unending feeling of dread in the background. Also, to be fair, the coaching search threads have produced some of the best material

According to AP and others, UT folks are in the process of negotiating a new deal to hopefully keep Matthews. He requested papers for the portal at 1030PM...90 minutes before the portal closed.

Obviously SOMEBODY has been tampering with Matthews. I hope when the Coaches find out who that is...they release that info to every reporter that covers UT sports. The feckless NCAA wont do crap...but let them be publicly shamed for being cheating sorry bastards trying to steal our players.

He used the portal as leverage to get a raise. Everyone is tampering tbh.

100% true bro. What are some people smoking on? Youd best believe we tamper our arses off too. It just is what it is. You either tamper in the portal or dont bother participating.Most players never get in the portal until someone from another school lets them know they are wanted.

Have you not noticed in most cases guys hit the portal then sign within days. For the top players sometimes it drags out between a couple schools. The only players you see stick around are the fringe ones that either went in blind or got greedy once folks started paying attention.

We had a spirited discussion about "once a guy hits the portal, I don't think we should take him back" and most agreed.

With Matthews dipping one foot in the portal, sentiment seems to have changed to "pay the man and get him back in."

Technically, I suppose, he's not quite in the portal and Squirrel and others may not technically be there either for reasons of paperwork, but when is that line crossed of "once he enters the portal, we don't want him back?"

The attitude around here seemed to change really fast about guys who want to leave (or want to leverage almost leaving to get a better deal.)

Doing the same thing over and over again is insanity. The WRs were not getting it done. And the tight ends weren't given the opportunity. And you aren't owed playing time when you keep dropping balls and can't get separation.

I truly hope they change the rules to “once you enter the portal you cannot rejoin the team” and “you have to go JUCO”. That would cut this BS out. Only an idiot that enjoys giving his hard earned money to people that haven’t done anything is happy about this.

Most teams won't take a guy back from the portal and people were adamant yesterday that "they made their choice and XX% never find a new team, so let them go."

He's likely just leveraging the threat to leave for a better deal of some kind and wouldn't do the paperwork but that's a problem too.

Letting that leverage work is like feeding a bear from your deck, the bears learn there's food at your deck and will show up regularly.

Maybe he doesn’t feel as if he’s in a place where he can reach his full potential. He just had to watch two true freshmen WRs go for 500+ and 5+ TDs each at a school he picked us over because we likely offered him more money. Meanwhile he was stuck on the sidelines while our WRs were probably one of the least productive units in the SEC in conference play. We just aren’t an attractive place right now for WRs despite the fact we just had a Biletnikoff winner 2 years ago. There has been zero life in our passing game and he seemingly is only willing to stick around if they pay him more and I can’t say I blame him

Sounds like our coaches or our system are bad. Ryan Williams and Jeremiah Smith play and dominate. Yet ours is 3rd string. We are already at a crossroads. This offense is going to be a major problem.
