ICE Held Less Than 37,000 Migrants In Detention At Close Of 2023 While More Than 6 Million Went Free, Report Shows​


Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) held just under 37,000 migrants in detention at the end of fiscal year 2023 while allowing more than 6 million to roam the country, according to an agency report released Friday.

The more than 6 million individuals that aren’t detained either have final orders of removal or are awaiting adjudication of their cases, according to the report. Border Patrol recorded record levels of illegal crossings at the southern border in fiscal year 2023, when there were more than 2 million encounters, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) statistics.

While illegal immigration surges at the U.S.-Mexico border, ICE has had thousands of empty detention beds that taxpayers continue to pay to go unfilled, according to a previous Daily Caller News Foundation review of agency data.

Dramatic footage shared on social media showed migrants walking through the Mexican state of Chihuahua, bound for the border.

Others were seen clinging to the top of 'La Bestia' - the freight train known as The Beast, which runs from Mexico City up to Ciudad Juarez, the border town with El Paso.

The migrants are part of a group of about 1,300 making its way through the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua since Christmas Day.

They are days away from El Paso, Texas.

A second huge wave could arrive at the border in several weeks, when a massive caravan, 6,000-8,000 people strong arrives.

After they trickle into Ciudad Juarez almost all will try and cross into the U.S.

A nearby soft-sided processing facility designed to accommodate 1,000 migrants that has routinely held nearly 6,000 during the month is now holding less than 500.

According to the source, not authorized to speak to the media, the facility has been nearly emptied through daily migrant releases of nearly 1,500 daily into the small border community of Eagle Pass. At times, when non-government migrant shelters in the Del Rio Border Patrol Sector closed during the holidays or reached capacity, direct migrant releases onto the city streets were conducted to reduce the numbers.

The source says the once-filled temporary staging area where thousands of migrants were held in an outdoor setting near the Camino Real International Bridge II is mostly empty due to recent enforcement actions in Mexico that have temporarily stemmed the flow of migrants into the city.
