Milton our qb next year?

I am going to be blunt. Another idiotic OP complaining about the backup QB. Gotta find something to make themselves feel like they have a clue. Leave the personnel decisions to the staff and enjoy a fantastic season. Stop creating drama, quit wringing your hands and get out of your BVS fetal position. WE ARE 7-0 AND IN THE CONVERSATION FOR THE NC THIS YEAR! Quit worrying about next year before this one is even complete! You only make yourself look stupid.
It isn't the worrying about next year that bothers me. We're always discussing who we might lose and who replaces them throughout the year. QB is the most critical position and generally gets the most discussion.

This particular discussion regarding Milton is annoying to me for two reasons.
1. Several knee jerk repeating threads made about it within a few hours.
2. The posters that decree with certainty that Milton isn't capable of being the man next year.

I only have a few certainties regarding Milton and our other QB's next year.
1. Milton has seemingly made significant progress with his touch and accuracy in limited playing time this year.
2. Milton doesn't appear to be as comfortable going through his reads as he'll need to be yet.
3. We really won't know until Milton gets meaningful snaps in an undecided game with the 1st string whether he can be the man.
4. You always need at least two capable QB's. There is nothing wrong with bringing in a transfer to compete for the spot next year.
5. There is no guarantee T. Jackson or Nico will work out any better than Shrout, B. Mauer, or H. Bailey did.

Edit: Oops. I forgot to make a new thread instead of posting in the thread talking about it.

I hate to say this but Milton (in my opinion) is not the future of the Vols. He is probably a great person but just because he has stuck around, I do not feel he automatically is the man to lead this team next year.

Joe Milton will step up and be the man in 2023 he's worked damn hard to learn the complicated fast break offense of Coach Heupel and his coaching staff.

Milton is 16-22 (one incompletion was the hail mary vs Bama that was actually very well thrown) for 360 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions, he also has 44 yards rushing on 4 carries. This while playing mostly with 2nd and 3rd stringers and people are somehow seeing some kind of big faults in his game to the extent they think he's a completely lost cause? Hooker's QB rating on the season is 187. Milton's QB rating this season is off the charts ridiculous at 270. I've seen nothing from him that doesn't look dramatically improved this season.

Not sure why people are so dismissive of him and are insulting his intelligence. Milton graduated from Michigan in three years and will leave UT with a second degree. He also picked the offense up quickly and that's why he initially won the job.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't play well next season. Probably not Hooker level but we've really never seen any QB here play at the level Hooker is right now. 44 touchdowns and 4 interceptions is a stat like you'd see from prime Aaron Rodgers. Milton will likely play and put up big numbers, every Heupel QB does for the most part. If something happens and it's a freshman, his freshman QBs have also put up big numbers.

Bingo to you Sir. Last year people said Milton didn't know when to scramble, was afraid to get hit and lacked touch on the ball. This year he's scrambled well, put his head down on some runs and shown good touch on the ball-- all backed up by the stats you posted above.

Coach thought highly enough of him to recruit him at two different schools.

The coaches and Hooker have said that Milton clearly outplayed Hooker in camp last year and it basically came down to "stage fright" on game day.

Hooker has said he's way beyond that issue now and has the tools to be the best QB in the nation.

Now maybe Coach and HH have no clue what good QB play looks like....

I see no reason why it won't be Joe's job to lose next year and, while he (and maybe nobody ever again) may not be at HH's level I think he'll do just fine.

We need to be careful about Joe. He has weapons that most can only dream of. He has developed a lot this year and lets next year take care of itself. The problem is we are comparing him to Hendon, possibly the best quarterback Tennessee has ever had.

I think about half of these ppl who hate on Milton project Jarret Guarantano onto him. Either they are casual fan who can’t remember how long Milton was qb, or they just love to hang on to the over throws he has in his two starts. Milton’s only issue last season was inaccuracy. It looks like he has fixed that this year. Add to that he looks like he actively trying to run over defenders this season. I’ve said it before but Milton has more potential than any quarterback on this roster, and it’s not even a close race. If he comes out dialed in next season he will be an all sec type quarterback.

And THAT IS THE ISSUE. Milton is going to be given the keys to the Ferrari until he dings it up, and he will, probably in next year's UF game. Will Heupel make the change then or lose another game to decide to go with someone else? Milton for all of his physical skills is just not a very good P5 QB. This is why we provide no long term extensions to ANY coach until after they have 4 years of tenure. Heupel seems to have a weak spot and he's going to prove Milton is good even if it costs UT a season. If Nico is on campus he should be given a chance to start, no decision benching him for Milton should occur before he even takes the field. You know like Heupel did to Hooker. Thank goodness Hooker is such a high quality young man.
I just hope Heupel doesn't go all Pruitt and die with Milton like Pruitt did with Guarantano.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but whether Milton, Iamaleava, some transfer or somebody else starts at QB next year, the drop off is going to be quite significant.

Dominant, heisman level QB play doesn't grow on trees. Iamaleava might develop to that point given his talent, but he ain't gonna be that in year 1. If we're as good next year as we are this year, it'll be because the defense makes a massive jump. The chance we get QB play even close to the level Hooker is at right now is far less than 1%.

Yeah, case in point, after our last serious Heisman contender Manning left, we went straight into the wilderness.

Got about 11 months to figure it out at QB for next season.

Transfers will be lining up to play in this offense.

Milton looks better than last year.

Don't see a need to rush the freshman unless Iamaleava just overwhelms the competition.

I've had my doubts about Milton's development ceiling since his rocky start last year, but we are sitting at 7-0. Enjoy the moment, folks...this season is special, and we've got all offseason to wring our hands and play "If I was coach". It's apparent that we have a damn good coaching staff and while we're all debating the QB position, they're evaluating and preparing the team member(s) who can step up into the QB1 spot. The team and the program are in good hands, and that's something that I couldn't have said for the past decade and a half.

Look at the progress from year to year. If he decides to stick around he’ll be ready to go. I just hope he realizes he can run and throw and tricks people in the right situations

If Milton's the guy next year we'll be in good shape. I can think of four or five (maybe more) SEC programs that would give their right arm to have him this year.

Maybe the only mistake heupel has made thus far is choosing Milton prior to the start of last season…as opposed to playing multiple qbs to begin the year allowing someone to win the job against real competition. It was a mistake. I know a lot of people will say I wasn’t at practice and how dare me try to make an observation only a coach should make bla bla. But, we have all seen times when a coach handles a qb competition early in the year by playing multiple guys until one has clearly established himself. That’s what should’ve happened.

Anyway, my point for bringing this up is most around the program seem to believe Milton will be our quarterback next season. Kind of a placeholder until Jackson or Nico can take the reins. I hope that is not the case. Milton is not going to just all of the sudden become a good qb. He doesn’t lack knowledge of the offense or need to develop physically. He possesses all the physical ability and is an intelligent/high character kid. What he doesn’t possess is pocket awareness and moxie.

I expected him to pick a part that defense today with pinpoint accurate throws and lead three or four scoring drives. I realize we were run heavy but he just isn’t good.

Playing QB is all about Moxie, pocket awareness, understanding distance and timing, accuracy, and understanding when to move the sticks and went to take a shot. There were several situations Milton threw low percentage balls on third down when he could have easily ran for the first down allowing the offense another set of downs.

Anyway, for all the amazing decision heupel makes day in/day out he seems to have a flaw when it comes to a kid like Milton. I think he becomes Infatuated with these physical capabilities and thinks he can coach the Moxie/pocket awareness and Savviness into him. But he can’t. Who cares if your quarterback can do backflips? Or throw a ball 80 yards? It’s totally irreverent. I hope he allows a competition between Jackson and Nico to play out. But I don’t think that’ll happen. I think we’ll see Milton out there to start the year.
It’s really hard to gauge how he played yesterday. I kept hearing he was so much better this year, but he is so talented, he can make some great plays and looks like a world beater, but can he make the right decision when needed? It would have been good to see him playing with the 1s yesterday, but against inferior talent and no pressure to win the game I don’t think it would have showed much anyway. I want to see him make the team better when he plays. That’s the difference between him and hooker

Heupel is lucky to have fans such as yourself to teach him how to manage a QB room. C'mon Danny White.... get this man on the payroll.

Didn’t he lead 2 or 3 scoring drives today?

Forget it, man. There are some on this forum that would gag and puke at the thought of saying anything truly positive about JoMil. If they do at all, you'll see it comes with one or more buts. As for the UTM game, nevermind that he stepped out on the field and did what his coach told him to do. Namely, not to showboat, or do anything that risked injury with important games of UK, GA, and SC coming up. He would certainly be needed if Captain Hook got knocked out of those games. But you know how it is, we got fans who assume they're better coaches than the actual coach, so there's that.

You know, it's entirely possible Milton actually outplayed Hooker in the Spring and Fall. Hooker didn't exactly start last year as a world beater. Same reason half of this group was crying because Bailey wasn't starting.

In fact, I suspect you'll find a lot of those same people in this thread.

I am not reading six seven pages of Legion of the Miserable bilge water at this point. 7 And 0.
