Mimi Groves/UT revoked admission

You know how to keep your Baptist friend from drinking your beer while fishing?

Invite another Baptist.
I was in a Baptist church hearing a sports evangelist .
He said there would be no liquor stores in our small town if it were not for the Baptist business.
I gave a hearty AMEN, and was never spoken to again by any congregation members .Baptists gloss over the fact that our Lord Christ Jesus first miracle was turning water into wine for his mother at a wedding feast. It is not what goes into your mouth, it is what comes out that gets us into trouble with the big Guy. There is a great book in which you can read these stories and more.

Me personally, I didn't want Banks booted and was glad they took him back. I think we do more damage to kids who do something stupid by throwing them away or kicking them out than teaching them how they screwed up. That being said what they did to this girl for a single word she said at 15 years old is unforgivable and doesn't mesh with the mission of the university which is mainly to prepare people for adult life.

Do I hate the University? No but I do think it has lost it's way.

I think you make a valid point about not wanting to throw kids away. But is it really a university's responsibility to prepare kids for adult life? They're in the teaching business. It's not really a professor's job to do that. He/she is teaching 2-3 classes each term (as an adjunct at UT I can tell you no matter how much you know, you still have to prepare for each class) and then they have to do their research and publish if they want to keep their jobs. No university uses regular employees/ counselors as dorm supervisors. I'm not sure a major university has the ability to teach life. Even psychological counselors are typically grad students and how many students actually use them.

Besides, isn't that really what everyone is complaining about, i.e. that the professors are getting into areas of discourse that the posters don't approve of?

I believe it's the student's responsibility to take advantage of the collegiate experience to gain those lessons from personal experience. Unfortunately most of what I learned in getting my first degree was how to chase women and how to drink to an extreme while maintaining a passable grade point. But I overcame that.

Raised Baptist, became an Episcopalian and you know what they say about us: wherever you find 4 Episcopalians you'll away find a fifth.

If you want to support a University that still TEACHES, consider donating to Hillsdale

Seriously? Unfortunately due to some prior political donations they think I approve of them and I'm on their email lists. Nut cases.

Football stardom covers a multitude of sins.
From Pee-Wee to the NFL, very few to none of the players have not used the N word. Yet some think cheerleaders over priced at a dime a dozen. Tell any cheer-Mom that cheerleading is not a sport. If you live, you will have more double standard stories than you can say grace over.

The argument that you are overlooking is that J.J. was already a student who made a mistake. To cut him makes the University look like they don't care about their students.

This young lady was asking for admission. They university has the right/ability to admit her or not based on their criteria. Now if there is nothing in the admission requirements about character then maybe she has an argument.

The University as a whole is there to prepare young adults for life and provide them with the skills/knowledge to succeed. Turning it's back on someone because they said a word when they were 15 is not fulfilling that goal. You as a professor are just a cog in that machine.

One utterance of a word at 15 does not define her character.

Fixed it for you. "Actions" maybe there are more actions that lead UT to realize character, maybe not.

Again if UT has no conduct clause then she has an argument but that is doubtful.

She is out of state so I see no argument for any lawsuit against UT if that is what you are talking about. I just think it's a horrible look for any University.

I think UT missed an opportunity here to in some way register its rejection of her comment, but at the same time allow her to make amends in a sensible way. Not exactly sure what it would have looked like, but something constructive could have been done.

That the guy who ratted her out takes delight in doing so is not a comment on UT, its a comment on his own lack of willingness to forgive someone who apologizes. He did not miss his opportunity to be a jerk.

Another poster referenced a lawsuit but she dosen't have one regardless of where she is from.

It's not a great situation but not horrible. The school does not owe Rogers anything. I personally think there could be a deal worked out but why should UT bother. Plenty of students will take her place without any tweeter mishaps or people willing to call attention to their tweeters.

It isnt coincidence that this school has failed miserably for almost 2 decades, to hire a competent football coach.

I see no reason for a "deal" or any contrition on her part. If she was thought to be a good enough cheerleader to be on the team and had the academics to be admitted they should have accepted her as is.

I never mentioned JJ or the young lady in question.
The post concerns itself with the perceived difference in the value of a football star and a cheerleader. Do you actually think that there is a member on the football team that has never used the N word? Or the cheer team for that matter. The US gets whipped into a race debate every 4 years for the Presidential elections, it assures that the people with dark skin pigmentation vote block gets to the polls. Lyndon Johnson said after signing the Civil Rights Act that it assured that Negros would vote Democrat for the next 100 years. His words , not mine. Maybe in 40 more years people will start to think for themselves. Until then, people like the young lady in question will have to be sacrificed for their stupidity during election years.

Pulling her offer to be on the cheerleader squad is a reflection on UT.

I can think of few better opportunities for UT than to actually have her on the Cheer Team and have her speak about how she has learned just how damaging such words can be and to teach kids to think before speaking. She has expressed remorse and contrition and would be a great ambassador telling kids “don’t be like I was”
Liberals want to rehabilitate adult felons and let them vote, but here is someone who as a minor said one stupid word (note there is NOTHING else in her background to show any racist tendencies) and the mob wants to sentence her to a life of social ostracism. She would actually have a better outlook right now if she had merely robbed a bank at 15. Think about that and weep.

LULZ!!!! Yep, should've stayed in the room like the other parents. Reminds me of when I go back to LC and my parents looking around Calhoun's for people they go to church with when I order a drink.

My in laws are DEVOUT Pentecostals. Every time we go out to eat my wife gets a panicked look when the server is getting a drink order. 😂😂

This episode is typical of the America we now live in. This girl was quoting a rap/hip hop song in her post. If she said she hated rap music she would be labeled a racist....but singing the lyrics of many rap songs is also racist. You can't win....except to stay off SM because even though it was a SnapChat someone saved it.

Another example that makes me shake my head is every time I see a KFC commercial with Col. Sanders on the bucker. Papa John was referencing how Col. Sanders referred to black people and was promptly ousted from his own company....but there's ole Col. Sanders still on the bucket. Go figure.

Should they do that to all students that say or do stupid stuff when they are 15? She doesn't owe anyone anything. She made a mistake when she was 15 and apologized at that time.
Tennessee does and should look bad for the way they handled this. They are hypocrites plain and simple.

I agree in the sense that they had a whole range of choices of what to do and picked the most extreme on one end, at the expense of doing something a lot more constructive.

As I understand it, her comment was similar to if I am playing poker with friends and win a good pot and say "Full house, bit#hes!" In a joking way, not actually calling anyone any epithet. So I think its a matter of her saying that she used waaaaay the wrong word to express that sentiment. Maybe a panel discussion on how race and popular culture come together to both promote awareness that the word has a history, along with a recognition that times change and that music, lingo, etc., can merge to make use of the word innocent to younger people, but truly offensive to older people.
