Minutes: BHH and Powell

I’m normally the last person to believe anything from Basilio, but given that the info he reported about two starters being out turned out to be accurate, I’m more inclined to believe he was also right about JJJ and Powell being less than 100%.

I think that there were other sources tweeting the same thing. Barnes could have easily pulled a Penny and just not shown up. I think that even with the L, this helps get the team ready for the NCAAT this cycle (assuming that the next variant of COVID doesn’t shut it down).

Charmin soft.

Hey TGO, sweetheart, in my sweetest and softest voice I will try my best to explain. Please in no way do I want you to take this as condescending or rude, and if at anytime you are feeling attacked just say pineapple…the rule where a player doesn’t count if he stays for extra COVID year was only this past year, going forward those players count against your limit, just like this upcoming season in football they’ll count against the 85.

Bailey can come back for a 6th year (fact) and if they are full with 13 others on scholarship they can finagle the finances with the N-I-L fund. Allan Houston was a walk-on his senior year. You’re convinced that they medical hardship rule is routinely abused so I’d think you’d see the workaround, Precious.

Man, I’ve been a huge Bailey supporter, but continuing to ride with Bailey over Powell is mind boggling. After last game when Powell got like 26m and Powell like 2m I thought the move was made, but then flip flopped tonight? Just doesn’t make sense, and the minutes Powell did play he was really effective.
Was Powell sick or not as that’s the only logical reason since minutes have been trending toward Powell and away from Bailey?

I’d call 26 minutes to 1 versus Arizona more than trending. The un-sick are going to outperform the sick. No other explanation is needed. If Powell wasn’t physically limited he’d have been on the floor.

Never said Bailey doesn’t have another year, assuming he wants it, just stated that his spot would count…I get you hate not knowing everything, but sometimes it’s ok to learn something new.

There’s no reason Bailey should be taking that shot with Powell sitting on the bench. Indefensible coaching.
I agree .. Bailey defends no better than Powell .. Powell needs the shots and freedom to put them up like JJJ and Santi and JJJ .those 3 pcts on 3 point shots are awful .. Santi bring alot to the game so he needs to be in there , JJJ brings some rebounding .. thats it - can shoot one on the ocean , Baily lost his shot last year and hasnt gotten it back yet .. sit him and JJJ some mons please ...

Haven’t read all the comments but CLEARLY BHH does not play with the intensity and urgency he needs to and that will keep his playing time down until he does. He had two simple possession turnovers that really hurt the flow and he just can not do that. I’m sure he will develop into a solid piece for this team where we can try an absorb those turnovers but he’s clearly no where near that yet. JMO .

If it’s true JJJ and Powell were both also sick then I’ve got a really hard time pinning anything on the coaching staff, borderline miracle we had a chance to win the game if that’s the case.
Defend all you want. Last night was on Barnes. Again, I love our coach, but he could have managed the ending of that game better last night, to the point he could have stolen that game. All JMO of course

He was down two starters….

Take away every team’s best players and see what happens.

Uros hurt us with his inability to just go up and dunk on someone he is so big but weak around the rim. The shot block late sealed the game and fired them up

Even if sick, Powell was 2-3 shooting to Baileys 2-7.

In a game essentially decided by one possession. You must be efficient and not turn the ball over. Justin Powell let a pass get away from him in the first half hitting the rim with BHH standing under the rim unguarded. Later in the first half Justin intercepted a pass and created a two on one fast break situation only to lose the ball in and odd attempt at spinning.

I do think this played a part as well. Both of those went from an easy 2 points for us to fast break the other way. I’m pretty sure it ended up an 8 point swing.

Who gets the credit for having us in the lead at that point of the game?
Sorry but he gets paid a lot of money to win games, not get us a lead only to lose it. I argue that better decisions down the stretch and we win the game by 8 or 10 points. Again just a difference of opinion. There are very few times I have put the blame solely on his coaching, I think he could have coached us to a win last night. JMO.

Take your excuses elsewhere. I've complimented the teams effort last night other than a few instances on defense. They didn't lose because of effort and they didn't lose because we were down 2 starters. That game was there for the taking.

Powell was brought in to be the outside shooter that we needed to go along with Vescovi. I don’t see that we are this great three point shooting team that everyone claimed we were preseason. The 4-8 minute scoring droughts are why we lose games.

Our half court offense still has issues. There are too many shooting the three that should not. This if you are open for the 3, shoot it needs to change. Powell, Vescovi, Chandler, and ON should have the green light. The rest not so much.

I don’t disagree he could’ve coached the last 4 minutes much better, but I also think just saying that is ignoring how well the first 36 minutes was coached up…our team last night had no business having the lead with 4 minutes to go.

It might’ve been you that I discussed it with. And it frustrates me too, but not even because I think Powell is definitely a superstar in waiting. I’ve said a bunch of times I think Mashack would contribute a lot more to winning than Bailey would right now. I just don’t have the patience to wait for Bailey to get his mojo back, and it’s not even like he was a stud last year. We’re playing someone who really hurts us in the hope that he rediscovers his play from last year… which wasn’t all that great to begin with! I’m gonna resolve to be done criticizing Bailey after tonight cause all that can be said about it has been
Yeah, I'm not sure I'd characterize even my expectation as superstar level, but I truly felt that given the opportunity (which seems to be the issue at hand), that his ceiling was all-SEC level talent as a junior or senior, kind of in the vein of a taller and more athletic Santiago Vescovi.

And the issue with Bailey is two-fold, making it even more puzzling. Not only is he not playing well, himself, but it isn't as if a lack of options beyond him is the issue. Powell and Mashack, both, seem to affect the game from more areas than Bailey. And I understand Barnes's predisposition of placing trust in veteran players above all, but at some point, that trust becomes detrimental to his own team.

There's a reason he is being paid $5 million to coach the team, and I'm behind my keyboard criticizing his rotational moves. So, I want to hope that it is simply my ignorance blinding me to what is actually going on, but I'd have to be shown tangible proof of why Bailey is still playing so much to talk me off this opinion. Making $5 million to do his job doesn't make him infallible even if it clearly does make him an authority on the topic. I'm just in a place where I'm not convinced he's making the best choice in this situation.

I don’t understand why BHH and Powell can’t get minutes. BHH scored eight first half points and not sure if he even played the second half. How is Bailey getting more minutes than Powell?

Bhh needs a year to develop some defensive awareness, and to get his conditioning right. Not sure why Bailey is on the floor at this point though. Powell is a better shooter, and a better on ball defender.

I'm not ignoring the first 36 minutes. But when you play a top notch opponent, 4 minutes, especially the last 4 are critical, especially on the road.

Now, on to the Boilermakers today. GBO

KNS just posted a story on Powell at the end. Rick doubled and tripled down that it was entirely based on his defense and made no mention of any sickness. The article pointed out Powell had the same minutes arc as he did in 4 of the last 5 games. We made 3 shots in the last 11:29 of game play and the best shooter on the team couldn't get off the bench because Rick apparently thinks if Powell is out there Alabama will go at him and score a basket.
