MLB Draft thread....SEC edition

A little off topic

3 schools in the mix for Raleigh

Cal Raleigh had committed and signed with Clemson so that Jack Leggett could make Cal as big a baseball genius as Leggett made his father Todd.

Cal was granted release after Leggett and his latest brain trust were fired, and is now looking at Virginia, Florida State and Western Carolina.

I hope for Cal's sake that he has someone advising him who knows something about college baseball.

I did not see that Cal Raleigh was drafted but teams may have backed off knowing he was a definite college guy.

We may have misjudged Todd....it's not like it's gotten any better.

AJ Simcox played 4 games with the GCL Tigers and has been moved up to the Connecticut Tigers in A ball. Playing on same team with Christan Stewart

Is there any chance Betts doesn't sign? I saw yesterday where here still hasn't inked a deal and the deadline is only a week away. He'll sign, right?

.01% chance he makes it to campus.

I agree but when studying how the elite teams get to that level it shows their roster with a few such guys.

We desperately need a few to beat the odds and say yes to the college experience

I agree. He said in an interview after the draft something like, when he was working out for teams that he wasn't thinking about being a freshman all American at Tennessee, his sole focus was on major league baseball.

Sometimes it is hard to decipher truth from fiction when the game is being played between player/agent and mlb team.

Believe me, I'd love to get him, just not going to get my hopes up.

Jim Callis tweeted a link to an article on the unsigned picks in the first two rounds, and in it he said he was not sure what the hold up was.

One slender reason for hope is that the Rays have a back-up plan for using the bonus pool money they've saved up for Betts to sign over slot. They could get a compensation pick next year and probably sign two later round picks who slipped in the draft because of sign ability. So one the one hand, they want to sign him because his talent was expected to get him drafted earlier than the Rays got him. But they do have options and don't need to let Betts hold a gun to their head.

Both sides may be willing to let it get close to the deadline to get the best deal, but both sides want it to happen. Bett's Twitter page has described himself as a Tampa Bay Ray since soon after the draft.

Besides, it's one thing for Tyler Beede to turn down $2 million or whatever to get a Vanderbilt education, play in a super regional every year, win a national championship and still get paid. It's quite another to give up that kind of money to come to UT and try to save a coach's job on a team that lost most of the best players from a sub-.500 team that was 12th in its conference and just had all the cream skimmed off the top of the incoming class.

Not SEC involved but dang this shows us it isn't about the round but the leverage

@jimcallisMLB: 34th-rder Tyler Watson signs w/@Nationals for $400k ($300k vs pool). Arizona HS LHP, FB hits 91, curve shows promise as well. @MLBDraft

Partly leverage, but it also shows what happens when a team like the Nationals signs all of its 1st thru 10th round picks for less than its total bonus pool and has some mad money left over to throw at guys who slipped in the draft.

Oh yea for sure. That's why we are going to see more and more seniors drafted in the top 10 rounds.

Keith Law just said his best guess would be that Betts will not sign and will come to UT

Heard he might go to Tennessee and hope to be a first-rounder in 2018.
