With the unofficial start of the 2009 baseball season about to get underway (the Winter Meetings). Let's go over a few noteworthy items that has already happened:

*Matt Holliday becomes an Oakland Athletic as the Rockies clean house movement is well-underway.

*Javier Vazquez becomes an Atlanta Brave via a trade

*The Red Sox continue to build on their Japanese collection

*The Padres end their relationship with Trevor Hoffman

*Greg Maddux retires.

With news surrounding K-Rod, CC, Manny, Peavy, Teixeria and more. The rumors, the speculations, and the confirmations will continue to run rampant throughout these couple of months.

LET THE DISCUSSIONS BEGIN!!!!

A reds beat writer for the Dayton Daily News broke the story.
I heard that on the radio this morning on my drive to work. My first reaction was, the Reds better hurry up and sign this deal before its to late. Homer was a bust in Cincy and they need a hitting outfielder in the worst way.

I've been in meetings all morning but the rumor in Vegas was that the deal fell through

Yeah, Jocketty was categorically denying that this deal ever happen; they are not even close. They do however need a right-handed hitter.

Well, the first trade went down to kick off the unofficial start of the 2009 season: The Tigers picking up catcher Gerald Laird from the Texas Rangers for minor leaguers.

The Mets have offered K-Rod a three year deal. You know the Angels are going to pony up because that team is loaded with cash.

Don't be surprised if the angels let him go. They would have signed him already if they planned on keeping him.

The Angels probably wouldn't have rode him like a horse this year if they planned on re-signing him, too.

There were even rumblings that he was gone during the end of the season

There is a report that his agent and the Mets may be close to a three-year deal worth 37 million.

Kerry Wood and the Indians are apparently close to a 2 year deal with a potential option for a third season.

Wood in the AL?

Direct from a certain espn analyst I spoke with at the bar here at the Bellagio, no big trades are even remotely close right now

-The Yanks may not be through yet as they have inquired for the services of ManRam and Burnett.

-The Red Sox are trying to see if Smoltzie is interested to play for them.

Padres GM, Kevin Towers, is confident that he can ship Peavy before the Meetings are said and done.

They had to counter the Mets deal with K-Rod. In a way, CC wanted to play in the West Coast.

They weren't countering anything. They offered a month ago and wanted to move on to other targets, so they put the pressure on him to sign now. It was just coincidence that it happened around the same time.

Now they're in talks with Lowe at 4 years, $66 mil

I can't wait for 3 or 4 years when age catches up with CC and he struggles to stay below 3 bills. Another desparation move by the Yankees at best.
