CC can opt out after 3 seasons and no money deferred. No one else came close to that.

Phillips said he expects Beane to get Furcal and for whatever reason is very high on him.

They weren't countering anything. They offered a month ago and wanted to move on to other targets, so they put the pressure on him to sign now. It was just coincidence that it happened around the same time.

Now they're in talks with Lowe at 4 years, $66 mil

I did hear a little bit about Lowe being one of the targets for the Yanks. What are you hearing about Burnett and the Yanks? I know the Braves have an offer for him on the table.

The yankees basically bowed down to CC. When Cashman left here, the deal was nowhere close to what they were when he flew back.

9:32 p.m. — Source: Tigers to aqcuire Edwin Jackson
The Detroit Tigers are set to acquire right-hander Edwin Jackson from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Matt Joyce, according to a major-league source.

Tampa Bay, with David Price on the way, had a surplus of starting pitching. Jackson, 25, was 14-11 this year with a 4.25 ERA.

In exchange the Rays get a 24-year-old, left-handed-hitting corner outfielder who hit 12 homers in 242 at-bats. -- Ed Price

Ozzie guillen is even better than advertised in person. Lou Pinella could probably beat the crap out of anyone on here. Joe Maddon is a really incredible gentleman. Walt Jocketty seems up to something. It was hilarious to watch the Indians' GM "celebrate" his recent transaction. Due to his incredible job of dressing down, I think only 5 media members likely recognized Jim Leyland. Finally, MLB suits really know how to party.

Rob, the Yanks offered 5 years to Burnett, but I think you probably read that on mlbtraderumors and Bill I was thinking about taking that trip to Vegas but exams held me back.

It'll be in Indy next year, and it's a fun trip. They swear they would act no different if this year's event wasn't at the Bellagio.

The Red Sox pulled out of the Burnett sweepstakes due to costs; instead they have put all their marbles on Mark Teixeria-who the Nats put an 8 yr, 160 mill offer on the table. The O's have a 9yr on the table as well.

The Mets picked up a setup guy for their newly acquired closer, KROD, in a 12 player, 3 team deal with the M's and the Indians. The guy picked up is former M's closer J.J Putz.

The Melk man going to the Brew Crew for Mike Cameron

Will the Cubs dump a starter to the Mets?

The Big Unit and the Strikeout King joining forces? OR will the Brew Crew do something about it.

To close out the Winter Meetings, the Rule 5 draft took place. It has produced such gems like Johan Santana and Dan Uggla.

That speculation became fact during the Winter Meetings.

I know that, but it was still a few days ago. I had a good laugh watching the Indians GM celebrate a little too much after getting the deal done.

Injuns have a thing for former Cubs closers. first Borowski, now Wood.

i would love to see the Cubs ditch Marquis and get a left hand bat in the OF. Peavy would have been nice (and i thnk it eventually gets done) but right now he's not a necessity.

The Braves could be your biggest rival for Peavy. They have no interest in Lowe, but were heavy after Burnett.
