Former UT defensive lineman Mo Couch explains family need for taking money | timesfreepress.com

"I'm going to take full responsibility for what I did, and I don't have any regrets at all," Couch told Tennessee Sports Radio.

Unlike many of his teammates, Couch is married, and he and his wife have a young daughter, Ahmya. They were struggling so much financially, he said, that his wife, Stephanie, considered moving back to her native Kansas for more support and stability.

The Yahoo! report said Couch, an Orlando-area native, had four payments totaling $1,350 wired to him by former Alabama defensive end Luther Davis and provided the Western Union transaction receipts.

"I'm not a traditional student-athlete," Couch said. "I'm married, I have a child, so the stuff they give us, if I was just like a normal student-athlete, I believe it can help to a certain extent, but when you have a young one and your wife, I mean, it's more you have to bring to the table.

"I was at a point where I going to lose my family. I know I won't be able to focus without my family, knowing that they're taken care of. I used all my resources possible. I couldn't get any help. As a father, I had to what I had to to take care of my family."

[leans back in chair, relieved]

Not Cool man... I know he did something wrong that hurt him and his teammates, but you read this article and this was a real world problem for this kid, he reacted in the only way he could (in his opinion). I feel bad for the guy. He is a VFL that made a stupid choice.

This is harsh, but he knew it was wrong and still did it and jeopardized our entire program over $1,300. He should've quit football and got a job if it were that bad

Definitely fully support Couch. Definitely a rough situation especially when there's a family and child involve.

We think too much alike sometimes, SDV.

Seriously.

It's harsh, but it's probably true. I'm sure he was trying to have it both ways so he'd have a shot at the NFL. I understand what he did, but I wish he'd tried something else. I just hope he got somewhere close to a degree.

Can't blame the guy. He did what he had to do for his family. Family comes first.

BS - no one forced him to get married and have a child while still being a student. There are also many players on the D1 level that are either married, have a child, or both and are not breaking the rules like Mo did.

Take. A. Joke.

There was nothing judgmental or sinister about my post at all. You filled in between the lines a LOT.

Why couldn't he get an unsecured loan from a credit union for $1,300? They make those kind of loans all the time.

With that logic, you can justify almost any behavior in the name of "putting family first". It's BS - there are better ways to handle things.

Clinton Dix took money FROM A COACH TO REPLACE A STEREO! He still plays on Saturday. Just not right IMO.

I'm not justifying everything I'm just commenting on his decision to take a minimal amount of money to support his family. Only thing he did different than hundreds of others (and thousands before him) was to leave a trail. Suggestions like him dropping out and getting a job do not help him in the future

Moral of the story: Don't produce kids if you can't afford it. Producing kids at a very young age = recipe for disaster.

But at least he's fathering his kids though. Our tax dollars are supporting too many bastard kids.

He also paid it back almost immediately. There is a difference.

That being said, I feel for Couch. He's a great example of how the NCAA's rules are antiquated and are in desperate need of revision.

While this is true, it is a separate issue. There is a double standard in place between programs. There is probably a double standard between players in the same program. There should be continuity across the ncaa for punishments when infractions occur.

Fade, that is the stupidest, most judgmental, condescending statement I've ever heard from you. Sorry I read it.

Mo sat directly in front of me at the Vandy game. He and I talked quite a bit, and while I never asked him any details about his "situation," I did say something to the effect of, "I'm sorry the way things went down the way they did and that you can't be out there, but, I'm proud of you and how much you gave to this team and this university, and I appreciate you for that."

Basically, his reply was, "Thank you, and I realize that I ended up letting down the team and the fan base, and for that I'm very sorry. I just hope they all forgive me and that I'm still behind this team and school 100%."

Mo REALLY impressed me with that statement that night. He's a good man.
