'24 MO DL Williams Nwaneri (Mizzou commit)

I always hold out hope right up until the guy punch. But this guy isn’t coming here. The guys at VQ (who have been wrong pretty much all cycle) are the only ones even talking about us…we’re out. But watching sjt18 fail to convince people that Missouri isn’t a garbage disposal of a state has been entertaining.

At least we’ll know what to focus on and worry about.
Just hard for me to understand. CRG has been an elite recruiter for years. He's put numerous guys in the league. Seems like guys would line up to play for him given his history of putting guys in the league. Are we just not being competitive in NIL with these guys? It just makes you curious about what is working against us? Is it the speed of our offense and the amount of time the defense is on the field? That just means more playing time, more chances to show what you got. Hell, it's a quicker path to some playing time if you're good enough to rotate in early on. It just doesn't make any sense.

Mizzou is due for their one 5* for the cycle. Poor kid is gonna waste his talents and millions for a short term bag

One of the insiders mentioned a month or two ago that there was concern by the coaching staff over defensive line recruiting, and that was when we still had a bunch of our top targets on the board. I wonder if @KingNico or one of the others could drop by and tell us what the mood is over there now that it looks like we won't land any of those guys after being in on so many of them. What are the fallback plans?

Right now our top commit as a down lineman on defense is ranked around 750th in the country and all of his film is of basketball.

Is there some common factor as to why we are missing out, or is it just the luck of the draw this cycle?

Seems pretty obvious with those two, no? Other teams willing to overpay and they go to the highest bidder. Plus it seems if Nwaneri chooses Mizzou the instate pull plus early money in hand sealed it.

They’ll sign other guys and hit the portal. We’ll be fine.

Not an insider, but right now, our fallbacks appear to be D'Nas White and Nasir Smith. Unless we can flip someone.

If everyone is "overpaying" for DL, doesn't that ultimately mean we're not being competitive in NIL at that position?

Honestly, I don't see how this new Missouri law passes any kind of legal challenge. Seems like collectives could file some kind of anti-compete lawsuit in federal court.

Who’s everyone? Seems like just two schools in this instance.
How much are the other top DL getting paid? Is there a reason none of them were our fallback options? Admittedly, I'm assuming they're getting fat checks too. But we know it looks like we're going to miss out on a top DL. Unless someone new pops up on the radar.

We don't normally get to see behind the curtain, so everything is speculation. But we do know DL is where we're really struggling in recruiting. So it's natural to wonder why. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that we need to adjust our NIL valuation of the position. Competition is what sets the market.

I’ve always had the feeling this gets used against us a good bit. No inside information, just a personal hunch

Josh Josephs and James Pearce are about to eat this season. We will see how DL recruiting looks when the dust settles in December. Before they sign, a commitment don't really mean much of anything.

Exactly.

Message boards are meant for speculation, Ron.

Also, I'm not downing our coaches or team. I love both. I'm just wondering why we're having so much trouble at this one position. Games are often won or lost in the trenches. Line play can make everyone else look really good or really bad. I just want to see us land some monsters up front on the defense, which is personally my favorite part of the game. Most love offense. I get it. It's sexy. But I love a tough, gritty defense. I want to see some beasts on that DL.

I don’t have a problem with this. The problem I have is when all anyone talks about is the one position that is less than what we want. Nobody ever wants to talk about the good. Just what is bad.

Our freshman and sophomore defensive lineman are as good as we’ve had since the early 2000s. I wouldn’t stress about defensive line.

I also think there’s a decent shot we land one of these guys still.
