It is not necessarily the servicemen. It is often the sleazeball business owners who set up to take advantage of impressionable, young men and women.Crime. Sex trade. Run down housing.
That's not true "everywhere" but there are elements of it anywhere you have army bases. Fayetteville was particularly like that. Columbus, GA was like that too when I was there.
Sort of goes back to the origin of the label "hooker". During the Civil War one of the Union's main generals was Joe Hooker. When his army moved there was a train of prostitutes and other "entertainers" that followed them. Alcohol and drugs were sold. The prostitutes began to be called Hooker's Brigade. All armies had something like that. Hooker appears to have encouraged and rewarded it.
This general is the reason why working girls are called Hookers | We Are The Mighty
You are correct and I'm positive Sgt18 wasn't blaming service members. Jacksonville,N.C. was a prime example of predator business when I was there in the 70s, doubt it has changedIt is not necessarily the servicemen. He will not finish his career at Mizzou.Extremely short sighted if he goes to Missouri. His exposure and thus NIL earning power is going to be somewhat capped there. Of course I want him to come to Tennessee but Oklahoma makes sense, Georgia makes sense (vomit). Missouri though just a dumb idea unless he’s going to transfer after a year or so.
That is precisely right. I think it may be a little better now but back when low paid soldiers needed low cost entertainment... which paid poorly and perpetuated an economy directed at that.It is not necessarily the servicemen. I can attest to the fact that Columbus, GA and Fayetteville, NC were exactly as you described. Fayetteville as late as 2005. I have not been to Columbus since the late 80s but I imagine it has not changed very much. That is precisely right. Have you ever been to northwest Arkansas? I can't defend the whole state. I haven't been there much. But the that area looks A LOT like much of east TN.
Every state has its good points. Every state has nice areas and great people. If you really don't know that... then you need to travel and fix that ignorance.
Columbus is a culmination of pine trees/ rattlesnakes and low level gang activity. I work for a car manufacturer and two of the locals tried to carjack one of our owners last month. The guy was a Ranger and to his credit held them until the cops showed up instead of dispatching them.
Just saw this:
