'24 MO WR Ryan Wingo (Texas commit)

It’s especially short-sighted for Wingo because he’s an EE. It’s almost September. He can get to campus as early as mid-December and start earning money. He can’t wait 3 months to start collecting his check and go somewhere that is more likely to prepare him for the NFL? Makes little sense to me.
Unless the money is more there. And it probably is more money there. Add to that it’s immediate.

Is $400k to commit to Mizzou in September with zero exposure inherently more valuable that $300k to attend Tennessee or Texas in January with tons of exposure? Without looking, who was the last Missouri WR drafted to the NFL?

I’m not saying your logic is wrong. I’m just saying most 17-18yo kids don’t speak that language.

Absolutely. I acknowledged as much in my original post. I also suggested someone with more wisdom and foresight needs to get in his ear and explain to him the dangers of instant gratification. Marathon, not a sprint.

I'm not sure of the answer, but that would be my guess, too. And that was 8 years ago.

Update: J'Mon Moore was drafted by the Packers in the 4th round in 2018. Washed out pretty quickly. Bud Sasser also drafted in 2015 with DGB, but neither ever amounted to anything. DGB had talent, but was a knucklehead.

I've seen they can't get NIL money until they sign.So it would be December at the earliest or February if they wait until then. The only benefit I see in a player doing that is say they sign in December but don't enroll until Spring or Summer. If they are an EE, then It shouldn't matter. I mean yea maybe a few weeks early but not enough to justify going to a school just for that reason.

Tennessee should pass a law allowing any kid who commits to start getting paid in high school no matter what state he is from

Or just pay them quietly. There’s no law saying you have to announce NIL deals. The only thing Missouri could do is tell the kid they’re ineligible for high school ball. So you’ve just got to keep it on the down low for a few months

Problem is likely the people in his ear are on the Missouri payroll. NIL makes a lot legal and transparent but there’s still a lot of money changing hands illegally in to influence where kids go.

But even then, you've gotten something no matter where you go (Mizzou, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, etc). And knee injuries aren't the career-ender they once were. I just don't believe for one second that Ryan Wingo is going to earn any kind of life-changing money for 4 months by committing to Mizzou at age 17.

Fair enough on the knee. Was just using it as an example. What about a Chucky Mullins type injury? Career ending and life altering. I just can't blame any of them for choosing what they feel is best for them. I have zero clue if any of this even pertains to this kid. Only a bunch of internet rumors at this point. Very possible they could be true, just don't know.

Would think the offers would be in the same ball park, just have no idea what his personal situation is. If my family was in dire need I'd take less money if I was able to get it right away. You know, like a "if the mortgage isn't paid in 2 weeks your evicted" situation. Is all just a bunch of what ifs and speculation at this point.

We'll see how it all plays out eventually. Would like to see him in orange, but if not, we'll still be just fine.

I must be missing something because it would appear that the consensus understanding is that this guy is going to go to Missouri because he might be able to get a few thousand dollars (can’t be a huge check that someone is writing before signing day) in September instead of December…

Don’t get it at all.

I absolutely understand the appeal of NIL. But getting it a few months earlier than you would at any other school seems like a decision you’ll come to regret. Their best receiver just transfered bc he wants to win games and get more exposure for the NFL. The 5 star freshman they got almost did the same. Staying closer to home I get, going there bc you get money a few months earlier I don’t (unless it also substantially more $).

I would assume that they are offering substantially more than anyone else as well. A "I'm making you an offer that you can't refuse!" type situation.

Stupid decision.

Sorry but you can’t defend this kind of craziness.
You can.

He's convinced that he can get to the NFL through Mizzou. He may be right. He may be buying into the idea that Mizzou is right on the cusp of competing and that keeping homegrown talent is key. There are lots of things he may believe in addition to the upfront money.

If I were a young guy, UT wouldn't have to be as "good" recruiting me as other programs. They would have to offer an NIL that was in the same ball park as others. But the bar would not be as high.

If that's the case with Nwaneri and Wingo and Mizzou is willing to chase the bid then there's really nothing anyone else can do about it.

His logic may be that he will be THE GUY there and with his going in notoriety that may be a great path to the NFL. Mom and friends are happy every home game day.
